I always set the flange on finish floor. A bit more work with tile. Also use calking under flange to water proof floor. Great video Chuck.

I read some of the comments regarding the installation of the flange on the finished floor, but nobody mentioned the WHY you do it, which I just learned myself. Evidently it's because the flange has a female part to it, the beveled edge/shoulder on the inside top where the wax ring goes, and the male counterpart is the bottom ring on the toilet that sticks out, so those two need to be married together, and then sealed with the gasket, and that can only be done by having the flange mounted on the same plane as the toilet; the finished floor.

No question. Ideally flange is to set on the finished floor, also my go to flange is a pvc flange but it has a stainless steel ring. It's awesome, never rusts or corrodes. The stainless steel ring rotates, so you can position it wherever you need even after the fitting is glued. I've seen them at lowes. But I'm sure Ferguson would have them.

@Dennis Cordova you'll actually be surprised that some of those stainless steel rings made nowadays aren't 100% stainless steel. Last time I took a magnet to one of those rings, the magnet stuck and the ring had the words "stainless steel" engraved in it. If the magnet sticks, it's not 100% stainless and it has a chance to rust. I've also had to take out several of those types of flanges before because they had the rings rust away. Buyer beware, my friend.

@@andrewwelch5668 there's different grades of stainless and machining/stamping can change the steels structure making them more or less magnetic(in simplest terms)

I set my flanges on top of the finished floor. I don't know if it really makes a difference, but I've seen quite a few flanges that have been installed flush with the floor and even slightly recessed into the floor have more leak problems. Hardly ever see a flange on top of the floor leak...maybe it's just a coincidence. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice work chuck! Bathroom tile.looks badass man! If u gonna set the flange to the hardi backer ya gotta use the other side of flange that way u can slide the bolts in without the tile getting in the way. I would just get the grinder and make a few slices just enough to sneak the bolts in. U the man keep the vids coming💪

sounds like a bad tile job or the subfloor/backer wasn't flat either and they just ran with it. it takes a good builder to make the whole toilet area flat from the joists up.

That supply stub looks like a potential PITA. Personally I like to have the flange so the closet bolts slide in easily, so above the finished floor. I’ve never had one that is flush leak, just sometimes the bolts are a pita. Like others have said, next time you may want to consider putting a spacer under the flange to get it to the appropriate height. Overall, good call on not drilling that floor. Drilling marble tile is a huge liability.
