The guy who makes this, Alex Evans, is a freaking genius. He's one of the masterminds behind the PS4 User Generated Content creation tool Dreams (also Little Big Planet) and he's just making awesome stuff wherever he goes. He's like top tier brilliant when it comes to making tools for others to express themselves with. Plinky looks amazing.

Alex Evans is a hero of mine. He did a talk at Siggraph many years ago about his work on Little Big Planet (quick search just now and I can't find online anymore), and that kickstarted my need for a career in games. He showed off one of his notebooks once too and I poured over it for hours. Watching his work was like watching a pioneer, because he (and his team) seemed to be actually pushing boundaries and squeezing the most power out of the consoles, whereas a lot of other game devs just seemed to settle for good enough (probably naivety on my part). I am sad he no longer works in games, but as shown here he's not giving up using his talent. He also now works for Nvidia if I am not mistaken, and I am sure he is very well suited for getting more nitty gritty with hardware.

Man, this PLINKY synth to me sounds good every time, all the time. I'm super impressed. It has been a while since I've actually went, "Woah, I wouldn't mind owning one. It legit sounds distinctive!" I just wish it was bigger than a homemade waffle for those of us who aren't into modular goodness and want something substantial!

I love your vides. You make the best by far for music hardware. Thank you. The problem with Plinky is the name. I don't care, but I can imagine losing sales to serious snobby musicians. I want to introduce Jack Smith on the Baby Grand and our favourite all around talent Hambone Jones on the Plinky, performing some selections from Beethoven and Bach. Plinky is cool. I think we are in an era of expressive instruments. The one that really saddens me is the eigenharp. I hope it comes back. It was too soon to release something like that for that crazy amount of money, despite how spectacular it is. And try to find an eigenharp repairman. I digress, as usual.

There's a notice on thonk specifically about this synth, saying that your chances of getting one are essentially zero. Apparently their wishlist has more than 4000 people on it already and due to the chip shortage, in August they struggled to source a mere 200 kits. You're still free to join the waitlist but you may be waiting for actual years.

Thank you for pointing this out. I was already averse to signing up just to check the length of the waitlist. How much does the thing even cost???

Very interesting device. In my case the small size is just right, and since I built my own MIDI controller based on a Teensy4.1 which includes a USB-Host the lack of a MIDI in port doesn't bother me. I have been looking for some granular synthesis in a small format, and the Bastl Microgranny never really impressed me. The build or this one looks super simple, so yes, I put myself on the waiting list for this one. Thank you for the video!

It actually has a serial MIDI i/o on the hidden expander connector. Just not Optocoupler, driver or jacks

@@kay_lpzw you mean I could just make my own MIDI IN OUT with a 6N138 and a few other parts? That is easy enough. Thanks for the tip!

@@brumd exactly. There is also a 4HP euro expander with them and another USB port (cos you can’t reach them when mounted in euro) and the ABXY modulations as CV out. It’s all open sourced ... check the discord server

Hello, I would like to learn how to use in plinky all these inputs and outputs in standalone mode, like a desktop synthesizer. For example as a mod matrix or with external synths. Thank you

Very nice review and plinky is a really amazing thing (I jumped on it last week after being on the wait list for months). I think it's also worth noting that it's not from a big company, but (as far as I can tell) was the after-work hobby project of a single person who clearly had a distinct vision and the technical chops to bring it to life. Interesting to consider how it might have turned out with a huge team behind it -- probably worse ;)

Well said! Exactly, if this would be a company project, there would be managers deciding which function should and shouldn't be included in order not to cannabilize their other products, deliberately crippling it. Now it is just one guy, trying to get everything out of it. (with the help of a user-community). Same reason why i love my DIY PreenFM2 synth. And there are so many more great projects from individuals and small companies.

Am I wrong in thinking that you could use it purely as an ADSR, or Fx unit, pressure controller, LPG and sequencer, and more? If that the case it's even better than I thought! I would really really love to see you use this within a modular setup.

Dear LooPop, your intro of each video starts with, "Hi." This has been working on me for some reason in my deeper subconscious. Then what happen is I started to say hi while taking my walks - like you say it, rather quickly, and to my surprise I was getting greetings back. So now I use it each day. Now what does this have to do with synths?
