Plein Air & Studio Painting: St Anthony Head Cornwall

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This oil painting began life en plein air in Cornwall on a mild March morning this week. I headed for St Anthony-in-Meneage and painted the view across the bay towards St Anthony Head on the Roseland Peninsula.
I wanted a good view of Carrick Roads from the Lizard for my exhibition at Truro Museum this summer. I wasn't disappointed! It was an amazing morning painting outdoors and actually quite warm in the March sunshine!
After a couple of hours working on location, I headed back to the studio where I let the painting dry for a few days before completing in the studio at Krowji, Redruth.
I painted onto a 60cm x 40cm plywood panel using my regular palette of oil paints:
Titanium White, Cad Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cad Red, Magenta, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Manganese Blue and Ivory Black. I also used turpentine and my homemade medium: turps, Stand oil, Damar Varnish.
For the studio session I used Winsor Red instead of Cadmium Red.
Thanks for watching - please don't forget to Subscribe to the channel.
All the best - Andrew

I thought at first a picture with mainly a huge expanse of sea would make for an uninteresting picture but,you proved me wrong.Very nice outcome.

Something about the very beginning with the horizontal line and your sky with the Indian red that I love... I know there is so much more, but the abstract quality is beautiful.

Nice treatment of the sea, so bloooo. That tiny bit of land jutting in from the left design wise is a mistake. It should either not be there, which would make the pic even less interesting, so I guess you should have used artistic licence and made it longer and deeper.

Thanks for your comments Jim. Too blue for me really but it was the dominant colour/ feeling of the morning. You have a good point about the little spit of land. A painting is never finished really is it? I may alter things as I look at it over the next few weeks 👍🏻
