It’s funny how a few people have said you’ve turned a drab uninteresting scene into something beautiful. I’ve always been attracted to scenes like that, and I suspect you didn’t think it was drab or uninteresting, otherwise you wouldn’t have painted it. Well done on another lovely painting.

Las week I went for my very first plein air painting and it was great , I kept hearing your tips in my mind like the cricket in Pinocchio. "Composition is king!, stand back and look!, values over color!" It went better than my greatest expectations.

That was another good demo on simplifying an urban scene. Good job. Love how you talk constantly about the values…yes they are king with color being second!

I love overlooked scenes. It's often that I'll see something that looks pedestrian, but there will be a story behind it. This is one of those. Only an artist would find the beauty in such a scene and capture the story. I really appreciate the concluding scenes you do Michael, when you reveal the finished (or at least close to finished) painting in your studio. It gives a good impression of what you were seeing as you did it. Your use of colours really push the interest in the scene. I would love to see you paint more pieces like this.

I have just begun to paint and i find your videos so helpful. I resonate with a few of the other comments that mention how your turn (on the surface of it) quite drab surroundings into something beautiful. Your process of simplification is such a hard earned (and learned) skill as it seems to be the distillation of what makes something interesting out of the mass of noise in front of you. Thanks! I go through phases with telephone wires. I think they add a lot to a scene like this.

I like the colors and the composition of your work. I would buy it. I like street scapes. Gas stations, alleys, billboards. I don’t know why. The impressionists painted streets, cafes, buildings. Hopper has a painting of the interior of a movie theater with an usher waiting off to the side. You can see a movie off to the side. His compositions were a little weird, but I loved them all.

I enjoyed seeing a different type of location! Might not be quite as beautiful and iconic as the Golden Gate Bridge, for example, but I think it's cool to create art out of unconventional places. People always give me funny looks when I take photos in places like parking lots!😊

I really love the finished painting, reducing it to a more manageable piece, focusing on shapes. Again I love your use of color, especially those cool tones in the shadows and the strong warmer tones ( especially the vehicles) contrasting but not overdone. I am inspired that you can build strong composition from an ‘ ordinary’ street scene that we tend to overlook. How much total time did it require?

What I really appreciated was your perspective and the correct angles of the objects in the painting. This is something I have been working on myself and let me tell ya, it is very difficult. It takes a lot of practice for sure! Any tips for me? Thank you.

I hold out my brush and match the angle of the slope of a roof, for example, and compare it to the corresponding angle in my painting. Hope that makes sense. I'll see if I can demonstrate in a video.

Lovely! I grew up in that area and you really captured it. I’m curious why you didn’t set up a bit closer to the scene? It looked like there was room in front of you to get closer and in shadow, but maybe that was a driveway. Thanks so much!

Thanks Mary Beth! The area in front of me was a loading dock driveway. Trucks were coming and going. The distance wasn't a problem at all. I suppose I'm used to it. It's rare to find a perfect spot to set up when painting urban scenes.

Big fan. I’ve noticed several times now that you’re quite a distance from your chosen composition. You must have very good eyesight. Is it your GoPro that makes it appear that way?

One of the challenges of plein air painting is finding a place to set up your easel. Often times I'm quite a distance from the subject. That can be a good thing because you can't see a lot of detail. It forces you to focus on big shapes. I don't film with a GoPro, I use a Canon G7X which has less of a wide angle lens.

I noticed when you added detail to the big truck, especially the window reflection, you went in with a dark and then lightened it up. Was this a purposeful technique to vary the values or just a last minute correction? Do you you often find that you have to make adjustments as you go? Reevaluate the value relationships? This would be a good topic for a chat. I know you understand the usefulness of value shifts and temperature shifts within large shapes and especially within shadowed areas. Maybe a talk on how to look for them and techniques for adding them. How to observe color in shadows, areas of reflected light, etc…

I was just adjusting the value. Often times, especially with plein air, the first attempt at a color misses the mark and you have to adjust. Thanks for the video idea suggestion!

Thanks for this video, Michael! It seems that you were standing far away from your subject (like about a block away)… is there an advantage to being that far away from your subject? I might have set up nearer the stop sign.

If you’re using the sight size method, the farther away you are from the subject the more you can fit in your picture plane. Other than that it can help simplify your subject because you will see fewer details and you can focus more on larger shapes. Was that helpful at all?

I was thinking of setting up closer but there wasn't an ideal spot. That area is busy with trucks loading and unloading fish and I wanted to make sure I wasn't in anybody's way. Since I focus on big shapes, being close to the subject isn't crucial.

Thanks Olda! I try to get the initial sketch done in about 5 minutes. Once I've sketched the scene I've committed it to memory. If anything changes I can either incorporate the changes or paint it as I remember it. I don't ever work later from photos. The painting gets finished on site PERIOD! 😂

Such a nice painting. I really enjoyed the juicy strokes of color you laid down. It leaves the finished painting with this sense of texture that’s very evocative. I really enjoy it. Anyway how long do you go around looking for a scene like this? Do you scout ahead of time or did you just find it right away? Did the guys working out there ask what your were up to?

Thanks Danny! I explored the area for about 30 minutes before deciding on this scene. I had my doubts, to be honest. The light was changing and there wasn't an obvious place to set up. I'm glad I went for it. All the guys working out there were very cool. They'd smile and give a thumbs up as they drove by and a few stopped to take a look. Nothing but positive interactions!

Thanks Louise! The wiggle of the brush is something that developed naturally. I wasn't even aware of it until I started making videos. I'm not sure why it feels right to me. It think it has to do with keeping energy in the brushwork.

I have Gamsol in my brush washer and that's it. I thin the paint mostly with Liquin. If I thin additionally with dirty Gamsol it doesn't really dirty the mix very much. I have used two containers in the studio, one for washing brushes and one for thinning, when working on large canvases. Hope that helps!

I use odorless mineral spirits to clean my brushes and a medium (Liquin by Winsor and Newton) to thing my paint. Hope that helps!

@@hhhjhffghbn Thinning with oms is ok if you're painting on canvas. I don't recommend it if you're painting on a gessoed panel. The thinner breaks down the binder and decreases its ability to create a strong paint film.

@@chamberlainpaintings I can hear the industrial refrigeration compressor, probably to a large walk-in freezer or cooled seafood prep area, love this “” reality painting “” out on the crest ; )

This may sound odd. I'm watching Alton Brown painting with food/Sauces. BBQ Sauce ketchup butter ect. I'm thinking some kind of enamel should be applied after it dries so that the painting does not get all stinky/moldy.
