For everyone asking, this is an unofficial snow test. When doing a last CTE or "Column Test" you dig out a chimney in between in order to do two test quickly. Rather than digging out we take the top half of the snowpack out with a shovel and precisely "burp it" by tapping the bottom of the shovel to test instabilities in the top layer of the snowpack. This is just one tool in a toolbox to gather data on instabilities and likelihood of avalanches. Make sure to do your own research and have the proper training before heading out to the backcountry. Hope that clears up some confusion:) Also this test was done December 5th, 2022 at Baldface Lodge in Nelson, BC.

Smartest move you can make before hitting the mountain! + Wear the locator and the inflatable ware , sort of like a inflatable life jacket that pops. That can keep you in the upper tier of the snow! Keep it up! The more people that learn this kind of information, the more who will be saved.

I learned at the age of 5 how deadly an avalanche is. My cousin and i were playing in the snow trying to climb to the top of this huge hill ( prob about 400ft tall, basically a small mountain) that was super steep an basically nothing but shale with a tree here an there. About 3/4 of the way up i just remember feeling the snow beneath my feet moving, an next thing i know my cousin and i are both on our way down the hill in a cloud of snow. An then it all stops, an thank god i was only buried up to about my waist and my cousin somehow managed to not get buried at all. This was in central Pennsylvania in mountains where avalanches arent really a thing, but you NEVER know and its always good to be educated.

@@will224488guyI know nothing about this subject, but I feel like he's trying to say that using more than one method to evaluate conditions is more likely to keep you safe. Any method of assessment has a margin for error. Repeating the same test and ensuring that you get similar results both times makes it a little bit more likely that you've gotten the right result. But doing a second test using a totally different method and getting the same result both times is powerful and lets you feel much more confident that you've gotten the right answer. So you check the weather and you make a prediction about how the snow is going to look/behave. Then you do your favorite (i.e. weird) test and make sure the snow behaves in a way that's close to your prediction. If your result is consistent, that's good evidence. If they're not the same, try your buddy's favorite weird test and see if that makes things clearer or less clear. (I don't know anything about evaluating avalalanche conditions, but i do know a bit about research methods, statistics, and quality assurance.) @@evolicious yeah, in tyler it stuck to the ground twice in 2021. usually that happens about every 2-3 years, but i don't remember it snowing at all and it barely iced a little bit in early 2023, snowed a teensy bit and it stuck to my apartment's dark grey roofing a little, but not the ground.
Im from upstate ny and see plenty of snow. But this video is still giving me cold chills listening to the chop through the hardened snow.

Basically when they have the snow on the shovel and hit it, the place where it separates is two different snow falls. That top layer of snow breaking from the bottom layer is how avalanches happen. I believe they’re checking to make sure it’s safe to be on the snow.

@@elux5504 I used to live in Colorado and always wondered how people decided when avalanche risk was too high. I figured it was just the depth of the snow pack. Now I live in Wisconsin and you see these layers in the snow all the time. And that's just the layers in the new stuff you shovel. The stuff that's been on your lawn since November when you are shoveling in February . . . I mean, it's like the strata sitting on top of the planet, right? But obviously we don't have avalanches in Wisconsin because it's so flat. And even considering that, it's just amazing how something that is totally normal and not dangerous in one part of the world is so deadly in a different place. Although, even as I type this, there actually is some danger in that in Wisconsin, it's just a very different kind. When you see those kinds of layers in the stuff you shovel off your driveway, it becomes clear why this snowstorm caused 50 accidents on the highways instead of just 8 or 10. It means 24 hours of snowstorm with a couple hours of wetter, almost ice storm somewhere in the middle. So thanks especially for your answer. TLDR: Wow! Common sense in Wisconsin and common sense in Colorado is apples and oranges!
Keep it coming. The more awareness the better.

A slip layer can form low down the snow column. The result is thay with minimal initial energy, the loose upper level will cut loose. On steep mountainous terrain they call them avalanches..
