As someone with a partial finger amputation, this was really hard to watch. I mean, how can you let your wheels and chain get so dirty!

Even when spinning by hand you have to be careful. Like when I'm cleaning the chain at the bottom I spin the wheel in reverse, at the top I spin forward so my hand/rag/brush doesn't get sucked in. Why do I clean top and bottom when the chain doesn't just goes around and around? Well, you don't *have* to but it's easier to clean/oil some sides of the chain from the bottom or the top, plus when you are cleaning you may push some "sludge" to the other side and it's easier to finish cleaning it off from the other direction.

Thanks for this, that’s the cleanest chain I have ever seen. The safety reminder is good as well, I think it shows clearly that a person who cleans the chain with the engine running and in gear, will not be riding for a long time!

Yup, my son who is a Motorcycle Mechanic decided to clean a chain with the bike running. One finger is now missing the last part of it. The part that you didn't talk about is how long it takes to heal and what changes afterwards. With the shorter finger, he had to adapt to how he does various things, like starting a screw or undoing a screw. So, the implications are more than just having a shortened finger and blood where you don't want it. But then my Grandfather was a blacksmith and was missing parts of most fingers. Heck even I managed to shove my thumb into a spinning grinding wheel and have a most unusual thumbprint now. Oh and GREAT reaction! :)

This just happened to me...currently in hospital bed and this video gets recommended to me out of nowhere.

Late 80’s I got my first motorcycle and thought this was a great idea. Ended up getting the tip of my index and middle finger chewed off (including the nails). Took several months for the flesh to grow back. They’re now a little shorter than they should be, but at least I still have my fingers.

I used to work at a bicycle shop and even those tiny chains/chainrings (compared to a motorcycle) can mangle your finger and break bones. A coworker almost lost his finger working on a fixie.

A guy in a motorcycle forum had this happen to him. It cut off the tips of two of his fingers. That’s an expensive lesson. At least he admitted it, warned others, and posted pictures to try to ensure others don’t do it.

Never clean. Buy oiler. Replace the chain and sprockets. Ride.

Yeah, I hate cleaning the chain, I put a scottoiler on all my bikes. I still clean the chain with a hose when I wash the bike to get any dirt and crud out but then just put the Scott oiler on priming mode and totally reoil the chain and sprockets after I hose down the chain. Doing this I don't even buy chains or sprockets anymore, the ones I have on my bike are still almost new and have 40k kms on them. I may replace the chain "just in case", but the sprockets are still good.

You can lose fingers just hand spinning the tire if you're unlucky enough. Also you should get an air compressor to clean your chain, much quicker!

Yeah, was told not to do that when I was a kid, learning about maintaining my bike👍 And got a GSA,so no chain cleaning duty now💯👍

As a general rule of thumb I never power anything on as I’m working on its moving parts lol. I have seen some people successfully do it but I will never take that chance.

Very good video! I've seen what rollers can do to fingers and hands. All unguarded, moving machinery needs is just something to grab, like fingers, hair, or clothing. I've seen pictures of injuries and it's shocking (one person was scalped because his hair got caught first and it kept pulling and winding in until something had to give. It's a very real danger. Excellent video, Greg!

I crushed my fingers cleaning the inside of the sprocket and turning the wheel by hand, just a small movement on the wheel is more on the sprocket important thing is to be careful even when turning wheel by hand.

I haven’t had a bike with a chain in decades but back then I never cleaned it with the engine running. I used PJ1 to lube it. Don’t recall what I used to clean it. Too long ago. Great video. Thanks. Already shared it. These days, the dealerships do all my maintenance. One bike has a drive shaft and the other has a belt.

Even cleaning the chain will hurt. I made the mistake of getting my thumb in the sprocket. It put a nice blood spot under my nail. I remember to not turn it that direction anymore...lol. the only thing I have is the front sprocket area accumulates a lot of road grime that I can't get out without taking the cover off that is part of the oil reservoir. That's a bad manufacturer design.

I only turn my bike on to apply the chain lube (thankfully the can has an attachment so I can spray from a distance while the nozzle is very close to the chain) If I had to use the close -up nozzle I'd NEVER turn on the bike. I'd rather continue riding with all my fingers intact.

Good guide! I personally use drylube for my chain it gets less dirty. Do far i have done 37.000 km with this chain and sprocket. At first i was afraid the chain would not last as long with the drylube but so far its doing very well and i only have had to clean the chain 2x. I dont ride a lot in bad weather but even then it dirt does not attach easily

The look of excitement when about to do and look of schock while happening was great.

Oh my god, I have never heard of somebody cleaning the chain with the engine on but it sounds mental.

I watched a video the other day where a guy cut himself so bad in the shop he needed a tourniquet to keep himself alive to get help. My co-worker had a mishap with a disc grinder the other day that put him in the ER with a huge gash in his forearm. He barely missed the vessels in his wrist. Please attend Stop the Bleed training (many “Stop the Bleed” classes are free) or watch some severe trauma response videos, and add a small trauma kit to your shop folks. Spending $50-75 now putting together a decent kit could save your life in the shop. Accidents happen when you are working with machines and power tools, or even just splitting wood. 😊. Basic kit: gauze rolls, tourniquet, chest seals (2), compression bandage (Israeli bandage), some wound clotting powder, decent emergency blanket, and trauma shears are a great start. I am a first responder and train others in emergency first aid, CPR, AED use, overdose response, etc. I keep a nice but small first response kit on every ride so I can aid other riders or myself. Stay safe y’all!

I accidentally had this happened to me when i was around 6 years old on dirt bike, my neighbor rode me on back his bike, well he went down a really steep dirt hill i didn't realize he was going to be going down hill , i couldn't see much in front of me, well I fell of an my hand somehow ended up going around sprocket and chain, his chain came off and all, my hand was torn up pretty good, my dad was pissed, Well about year so later that neighbor went to prison for killing his girlfriend! Crazy fckr!

I was told by a long-time mechanic that the chain will last longer if you don't use cleaner or a brush and just use the lube. Much easier on the rings both chemically and mechanically, and he said the lube + natural rubbing during riding get all the dirt out of the important places. Said now his chains last twice as long.

I have never done, nor will i ever do, this type of thing because i know how rotating equipment and torque vs puny human bones works. Watching this vid just solidified that in my mind lol. Your reaction was priceless. Stay safe everyone.

Do you use a new rag every time, and what do you do with spent rags? Any advice for cleaning the rest of the bike? I’ve been wondering about better/best ways to detail my bike so I don’t scratch it with debris in the microfiber.

Handy be riding a DCT from now on!!!

I cut a piece of cardboard to slide behind the sprocket and chain, to keep the sprays from hitting the brake disc on the other side of the wheel. Cut a close C shape notch in your cardboard.

I always rotate the chain towards the little sprocket, thus I have more chain length to clean, and my fingers aren't that close to the big sprocket. I also clean the upper rail on which the chain slides.

Gear oil works the best for cleaning & lubing your chain at the same time. Fortnine did a video testing different chain lubes and gear oil won.

What do you think about using water/ hose to rinse the chain after you clean, then lube?

Great explanations on How To properly clean your chain, i'd also add a little clean on the brake disc with brake cleaner, because when you spray the chainlube it forms a cloud of small particules, and as you saw, these particules will drop and deposit on the rim but not only the rim, also the brake disc gets a little coat of chain lube, and lube on brakes isn't a good idea lol, so i like to personnally always scrub my brakes with a clean towel and a bit of brake cleaner. Costs nothing and will probably avoid you going into a wall or a car on the first turn down your house.

Thats how i almost lost my thumb last summer, my luck was that i had removed the chain guard so my hand didnt get caught up in it, the image of my thumb slowly passing through the sprocket are now forever burnt in my memory serving has a reminder (the rear wheel spinned way slower in gear than the one in the video), somehow i felt absolutly nothing so it made it really wierd in the moment and i was unsure what had exacly happened. Thankfully this happened on a chinese 125 and the chain streched (from 20mm of chain slack to 70mm) so my thumb was only bitten and a bit broken at the joint, but it made a decent recovery, still hurts a bit to this day. Never stick your fingers in moving parts.

Shouldn't shift from neutral without the clutch, it damages the dog gears in the gearbox. Solid safety advice video though

real story, one of my friend got his finger cut off last month because he's wiping his chain with a piece of cloth while the bike is on a stand and running in 1st gear because he is a big lazy ass guy. he's wiping his CBR150R chain from below, the cloth got pulled in by the sprocket, lazy boy took 3 business days to react but nahh it was too late, took half of his finger off and thats it. it sounds like i hate him, i do, but not because of this accident, it was because of what he did to many of us back then that was unrelated to this, served him right if you ask me. edit: pro tip, at least for me: set the bike on a stand, dip the toothbrush into a diesel fuel (or kerosene, but to me diesel fuel is softer and cheaper), brush the whole chain all 4 sides and the sprockets too with it, spray them with hose pressure level (not too high to sip pass the rings and not too low to not strong enough to washes off the dirt from the chain), to dry it ill just turn on the bike and set to the highest gear and rev it because the water will get flung off the chain and stop until there's no more, set the bike into 1st, spray the chain lube till (for me) 4 passes for each side (aim at the rings not the rollers), rev it again till the excess lube flung off until there's no more and stop. it'll create a mess, so i recommend getting a wipe ready or covering it with a cardboard. I'll just do it outside with a paddock stand.

Hey Moto, check this out. When I was in high school, circa 1978-79, one of the local guys was cleaning his sprocket on his KZ200. He made the mewspaper, he was cleaning the sprocket with the bike running. Luckily a KZ200 didn't have enough torque to rip his entire hand or arm off, but he did have to have the fire department come and extricate his dumb self and his hand from being wrapped under the chain I don't believe he lost any fingers, but I believe a couple were looking the wrong way. Aged 15, I put a hole in my thumb nail whilst working on a moped. It wasn’t even running - just the back wheel spinning freely but I got caught. Lots of pain and blood but no lasting damage. I was lucky and learned my lesson

Definitely recommend lubing the sides of the chain. I used to not do that either, as it's technically speaking not necessarily. BUT, the most important job for lube, is rust prevention. And i had Lots of rust on the sides of the chain until I started lubing the whole chain.

i use wd40 after it rains (and ive ridden through it) and no rust anymore. i used to clean and lube and i got rust. maybe it wasnt the best lube but the wd40 does a great job.

@peterkeleher Just a fair warning. Lot's of tests and professionals warn against it. WD40 is designed to desolve, and rubber is one of the things it desolves. Watch people doing the baloon test. You can pop balloons in seconds with WD40.

Now, to not extend more my text (I could spend more trying to explain how excited I am for finding this channel) Doubts 1.- Is it true that sportbikes in general can have issues on their engines if you drive 'em at low revs? I know they are meant to fly like a missile, but just as I saw in the video, what if some days you just want to commute with calm and tranquillity? I'm not saying I would never rip off that throttle, but the idea of "if you are not running like crazy 99% of the time with this engine, it will break down" it's chasing me. I have read texts of some people here on youtube that are mechanics (so they say) that most ppl go back to dealership with their engines having issues because they just dont ride them on high revs so... I just don't know what to think. 2.- How is the water issue going? I mean, every motorcycle needs to be built to resist water in my opinion, choppers sportbikes enduro adventure etc, but want to ask, how careful do you have to be with the water? you can just wash any motorcycle with all these electronics without any trouble in mind? you can just drive her on the rain for hours without issues? No problems with the components or something important? -I would really really appreciate it if someone takes the time to read and answer me, I'm the only one in my family that loves motorcycles so I have no one to lean on, also no friends here, I'm like an hermit. Try this method. Before you spray anything on the chain; run the chain brush and a clean rag over it first. It will knock off half the dirt before you turn it into mud with the cleaner. It actually takes less time, rags, and cleaner to use this method. Fluid Film (lanolin) is the best chain lube i have ever used and it seems to repel dirt vs attract it. p.s. somebody posted a video in the last day or two of their bandaged hand from trying to clean a running chain. LOL

I also often clean the rotors when doing the chain, as oil from sprayuing the chain may get onto them (also because cleaning them takes couple minutes)

I once pinched a finger between the chain and sprocket on a bicycle due to carelessness/idiocy (I was turning the sprocket by the teeth).No way I’d EVER put any body part inside the chain run while the wheel is turning under power.

I clean my brake rotors whenever im doing the chain cleaning might aswell all that black stuff coming off on the cloth is satisfying

Done this many years ago... Ripped my thumbnail clean off and had a ton of stitches in my thumb, and a broken bone 🤘 Luckily my nail regrew and I didn't lose a finger.

I’ve used the cycle spirits for years, best stuff made, u til they raised the price from 7$ to 17$ during Covid. Really disappointing, off to using meguiar’s quick wax.

How often do you clean it? Also my GSX-R manuql says not to use those spray lubes... Only use heavy motor oil

My best friend lost about 3/8 in from the tip of his middle finger cleaning the chain with the bike running😢 It was pretty bad but could have been much worse. He was planning a 13hr trip on his ninja 250 and tuning up the bike was his last thing before leaving. After the chain incident he ended up not going. I always wondered if God was looking out for him in a mysterious way as he might have gotten hurt worse driving that little bike across the country.

What's the product details for the cleaner? That stuff seems to work very well, I would like to give it a try on my Speed Triple. I've found Kerosene works great for cleaning the dirt and grime off chains, followed-up with AMS oil chain lube. EVERY 2 WEEKS! Consistency is more important than the brand. Your chain will appreciate it, and it sounds real nice after a good cleaning too!

So glad I'm on a GS now and never have to do this

What about putting the oil back on the chain, im so obsessed about getting oil on the brake pad and wheel, am i being silly, is the way your doing it alright.

Im really anxious about cleaning my chain, I used all wheather chain lube, chain cleaner and the same brush however I damaged the chain from removing the esstinal "natural" oil? from the chain. It was brand new and only 4 months old this chain All I do now is lube it up once every 2 weeks and thats it

I'm dipping the scrubber in the Diesel (2 euro /L) a few times and brush the chain while letting the engine running stationary in 1st gear. After 2 minutes I take the pressure cleaner (your microfiber cloth does not clean inbetween the rollers), keep it at a distance of about 5 inches for a few minutes, cleaning the chain up, down and both sides. then I dry the chain with an old towel or shirt go dry it, and only during the drying the engine is not running. When the chain is dry I start the engine again and brush some grease on the chain. Done! Time: 6 minutes. Cost: Next to nothing. Level of chain maintenance and protection: Very high!

Of course, absolutely do not try to clean your chain with the bike in gear and running. However, if you have just washed your bike and want to get some of the water out from between the rollers so you can lube the chain, it is quite easy to just put the bike in gear and let it idle to fling the water out from the chain. You could also go for a quick ride, or if you have an air compressor you can use that, but if you're impatient and poor like me, chucking it in gear and flicking the water out with the rotation of the back wheel is pretty easy.

Do you throw the oily microfibers in the wash or do you throw them out? Not sure if they would ruin a washer or not.

depends on how dirty they get...usually last a while, use same rag for numerous cleanings...but I don't use the chain rag on the rest of the bike..maybe I use it for the rims too

Happened to me as a 6 month old. Sprocket cut off my index finger from top, someone's bike, dad rushed me to the hospital and had it reattached. My finger is fine today but yeah if I was a little late to the hospital, it was a goner.

its even outright dangerous when you spinning the tyre without engine power. It happened to me I was spinning the tyre spiritedly and the clothe I used to clean the chain (coz I wanted it done quick lol) got caught and pulled my palm into the sprocket. Nothing bad happened as it was spun manually but still the inertia of the tyre was still considerable. My fingers wedgged the sprocket and made the wheel stop but boy oh boy I leaned to never spin the wheel where chain is travelling towards rear sprocket, always spin the other way as if the bike is going backwards. There is a lot in a way before your hand can get inside front socket. But like he said, think about what you are doing and don't be lazy.

Another thing I do when cleaning the chain is fold a paper towel length wise a few times (so it overhangs the chain maybe a quarter inch on each side) and lay it on the chain at the bottom and slowly roll it thru the sprockets front and rear which really helps get additional crud out from between the links and the spocket teeth... The first time I did that I was surprised how dirty the paper towel got even tho the chain looked really clean...I can't believe that people would actually clean the chain with the bike running. I guess like the saying goes.. You Can't Fix Stupid...

One of my best friends made this mistake 40 years ago (ish) when he was a teenager. Result was that his middle finger is now about the same length as his pinky. That was the last time he cleaned a chain on a running bike, so he at least demonstrated he was a learning animal. So there's that. :-/

For those who haven't tried it, Maxima SC1 is another miracle product for cleaning. Makes it so you almost don't even have to clean next time, just give it a quick wipe and it's back to shiny.

Just wondering, is a foam cannon clean not enough for the chain if you do it regularly? Or is that bad for the chain?

Could I use a pressure washer initially to help clean the worst dirt from the chain and sprockets first?

You could, just don’t get too close

I usually spray mine with silicone and wipe clean. O-ring chain.

All my bikes were and are shaft driven.. I just can’t be bothered faffing around with chains 🤷‍♂️

years ago a friend of mine do this mistake and injured himself very bad when bike is running never touch below 😢 u can lost someparts of you u can buy a new bike but can't buy new arm

Cooking oil is the best lube especially the burnt and old oil stashed behind restaurants.

Will the gunk wash off from the microfiber cloth? or do I need new ones after every 1-2 sessions?

I'm skeptical about using such a brush. All was nice and well until I started noticing missing O rings here and there.

I do my chain every 3 days/a long day of riding. Mainly because I finally have one of my dream bikes 😅 it’s pretty much always showroom clean.

Once i caught my fingers between the chain and sprocket with the bike OFF, while turning it by hand. It sucked and was a friendly reminder to NEVER clean the chain with the bike on!
