Hey Scotty! love you channel been watching for almost a year now! I just bought a 1995 RAV 4 2 door back in august for 1300 euro and i had my mechanic check it before i bought it. The car has 210k KM on and the engine is running perfect. I've been having a problem with my car since. Everytime i go on an uneven road or a speed bump i can feel the back of the car shacking left and right. Also when im shifting gears and I am on 2000 RPM and let go of the gas petal, i can feel the car shaking back and forth but not like its about to stall, more like its chassi is bending (back wheels coming closer to the front wheels) I hope that makes sense. My mechanic says the problem is on the rear sub-frame. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for your time!!

I love when Scotty does his best to save us money. I can vouch for this video! DONT DO IT! I tried to flush my first cars transmission and it was all downhill from there. The lube shop that I went to told me that it would be a good idea to flush the transmission because it was slipping a little between 2nd and 3rd gear. After it was done it was slipping in 2,3, and 4 gears. Eventually lost reverse. I was so young and poor that I went as far as replacing all the transmission fluid with Lucas Stop Slip, another horrible idea. A while after that I couldn’t get it going unless I hopped out and gave it a push and jumped back in to give it gas before it would take off. Oh the fun times of being young and poor. I lease new cars now because I’ve given too much of my money to transmission shops.

My '94 Camry's auto (190,000 kms) was slipping when cold, sometimes finding a false neutral; then only working properly once fully warmed up. I decided to get the transmission and the torque converter flushed and replaced with new (Toyota brand) ATF. Now the auto box runs perfectly, no slip, no problems. Sometimes flushing the transmission is just what's needed.

wahyu subiyanto Same here. But as Scotty mentions, the auto engineer told him the fluid is good for the lifetime of the transmission. So if the life of the tranny is say 100-150k miles with the original fluid, wouldn’t it make sense that changing it prior to that would extend its life? I also wonder what to believe from the manufacturer’s service manual. Since the big profits for the dealerships is in servicing the vehicles and not in the actual sales, I suspect these service manuals are written with the dealers money making service department in mind. My local mechanic says that a lot of the stuff recommended in the service manual is either unnecessary or need not be done as often as recommended.

When i took the Auto Mechanics program at vo tech in the mid to late 1990s, my instructor taught that: change transmission fluid and filter as per owners manual specifications. If in doubt then it should be done every 50k miles. If the fluid has more than that, drop pan, replace filter, and save old fluid. Take and run old fluid thru a screen, and pour back in. If you are a bit low after fluid check then top off with new fluid and you are good. I've done this over 20+ years now with 100% good results. The reason behind this is: ATF has very strong detergents in it. All new ATF will wipe out the friction material on the old bands and clutches.

@@howtodoitdude1662 what happens is there 2 ways to expand the life the transmission. As Scotty said, the friction helps those who never change transmission fluid, better to top off and reuse dirty old fluid as he said if you past the point of no return. Now if you keep up with fluid maintenance every 30k miles or something, then keep doing that. Either approach will exceed 100k miles. But the regular maintenance has a better chance of 300k. But both methods should see 150k in my experience. As I never did transmission work in all 3 of my cars. Toyota Tercel 97, 215k miles, Mazda 3 2003, 145k miles, Mazda 3 2015, 94k miles...no transmission problems ever on all 3 cars. A flat tire was all I've ever had. Lucky? Perhaps I was, you tell me.

It drove fine, but I wanted to make sure that it stayed that way being as I had no history on this transmission. So I decided to flush it. Bad idea. The car never made it to the road. I wound up having to drop it back out to do a full rebuild. Took me a month of having half the garage a mess and the the whole place smelling like transmission fluid. Oh, and one very pissed off girlfriend. Ever have a conversation that started with, "Honey, could you please move the transmission? I'd like to take a bath." Yeah. Not good.

I buy vehicles for a company and my biggest surprise was a one owner Toyota Tarago (Previa) we bought with blown transmission at 127,000 miles (204,300km). When I removed the pan I found sludge that clogged the strainer. This reliable Toyota U241 transmission 4-spd was totally destroyed from such a simple problem of no regular pan removal. ZF used to recommend an oil and filter change for severe driving conditions, every 75,000 miles or 8 years and never for normal driving condition. But since they started their oil change business it’s 60,000 miles or 8 years for everybody xD An Allison TC-10 for Class 8 trucks will go 750,000miles between oil change, but that’s something else xD So here you go, I’m not an expert so I’m not can’t say who’s right, but that’s what transmission manufacturers says.

@@a.s.4914 I here ya brother, we got a CVT Altima a couple years ago (BIG MISTAKE!!), long before we knew about their poorly designed, poorly made transmissions. And now almost 10 years old and with 117,000 miles, tranny's on its way out. Just like newer Ford Focus', Altimas as we all know have ridiculous transmissions that break down all the time. Wish I knew about Scotty before we bought that Altima though!

Excellent info, Scotty. I changed the trans fluid on my 2005 sienna at 220,000 miles. I removed several quarts each drain and filled with same amount. It got cleaner, and no slips. I will change filter in May and replace whatever quantity of oil I get out. But Maybe Toyota’s are just indestructible. My Avalon is 280,000 miles with only 2 changes, and my manual trans Camry in looking at 300,000 and is just starting to be broken in. But everything I read said don’t flush. And since Scotty says don’t, that makes it 11th Bill of Rights. DONT.

He is right. Only do a fluid change. If the filter is standard removable filter, change it too. Even dealers have stopped flushing transmissions.

Wow. Toyota has been trying to get me to fork over $400 for a complete fluid replacement in my transmission, 2013 highlander. They called it a "Fluid exchange". This video helps immensely. I will just go with the option that doesn't replace all of it and replace the filter as well.

I called the dealership where I bought my STANDARD transmision Versa to get a price on changing my gear oil. The mechanic I talked to said the transmission needed to be flushed. This is why I went car free and took the bus/bike for about 10 years. I would like to spread the wealth and hire people to do the work, but in the end I know I'm the one who has to do these chores even as an old disabled lady....even if it takes me all day to do a half hor job.
