Please NEVER Connect Windows XP To The Internet...

Ойындар

Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at what appears to be a cool experiment I've seen floating around on KZread where people connect Windows XP to the Internet only to have it infected within minutes. Why? Let's find out! Thanks for watching!

I know it's officially not possible but it is technically possible to bypass these requirements. I actually used to run Windows 11 on a Kabylake laptop back in 2021, the only downside is Kabylake has GPU issues with Windows 11 but if you didn't care about it then that's okay. Linux isn't practical as many Windows programs including my programs i made will run either broken or worse refuse to run at all.

It is extremely unlikely to get hacked if it is any other computer running on Windows XP. However, having an open-port, firewall-less, Separated IP address, and no ping filtration system on there is an open invitation for somebody to install a worm or something, and besides, it's a bad idea to do that on any Windows version for that matter. Merely having an internet connection on old versions of Windows is not usually enough to get insta-hacked, but giving the system UNFILTERED EXPOSURE to the internet is almost asking for it.

Was on SP1 XP, which hasn't been widely used in 20 years. Right now, do three of these things on Windows 11, I guarantee you'll get the same effect. Furthermore there is no evidence this guy didn't inject his own malware for the video. With the firewall enabled, connect XP SP3 (the version almost everybody is on) to the internet and watch for malware. There won't be any malware.

It's because some key component computer uses windows XP, a lot of things, even the modern hardwere/softwer are tied to that WinXP, somewhere in the deep server room, heck pretty sure msDOS still being used. Replacing them IS possible, but imagine if that WinXP tied to 100+ other stuff... and those 100+ stuff also tied to other stuff... sheesh, yeah headache. It's easier to just create a "gate" (firewall) that block stuff going into that WinXP, rather than replacing the WinXP.

It's crazy that they're making Win10 EOL in one year when most the users are still using it. People know how bad Win11 is and there are restrictions unrelated to security that made their free upgrade impossible, which I think have workarounds now. Windows 10 and 11 are basically the same, 11 just has more restrictions to make sure that they can collect and send more personal/personalized data. My mother had a laptop that was only a few years old, she "upgraded" to 11 and within a few weeks her browsers would freeze or glitch out. All of her drivers were up to date and I'm pretty sure the computer didn't have any viruses, it was basically a Facebook machine which I personally don't want on any of my devices. I've seen the features available for Windows 11 and outside of my sizable Steam collection, I have little reason to stay in the infrastructure. Does anyone remember when Microsoft said Windows 10 would be the last OS, constantly forcing any computers connected to the internet to update? What features does their cursed successor offer to actually consider it an upgrade? A lot of people jumped at the opportunity to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 because it was a return to familiarity with new features and less restrictions but 10 to 11 is not.

I wouldn't even connect a Linux machine directly to the internet without a firewall and router, so this experiment was a bit odd. Yes, connecting outdated systems to the Internet is always a risk, but that risk was exaggerated by using Windows XP SP1, which was still heavily based on Windows 2000 code, rather than SP3, which had backported security features from Server 2003 and had its firewall enabled by default. That's why I even claim that Windows XP SP1-SP2 is not the same as the final version we had until 2014.

This isn't exactly news. Over 20 years ago, XP had a vulnerability that would cause it to get infected BEFORE IT FINISHED INSTALLING! During phase two of three of the installation, as soon as it had networking working, it would almost immediately get infected with the NACHI/Welchia worm, so by the time you finally booted XP for the first time, it was already infected. 🤦 This was one of the reasons that Microsoft went into panic-lockdown mode and had _everybody_ put _everything_ on pause and prioritize security until SP2 was released (which they not only provided as a free download, but actually mailed physical CDs of it for free to ensure that everybody got it). The same thing is currently happening with Windows 10/11 where it's so full of bugs, Sundar is making everybody focus on security (because apparently, they learned NOTHING last time 😒). 3:00 I don't think this is the NACHI worm since that's probably not circulating much anymore, and iirc, NACHI would make a fake svchost.exe file in windows/tftp/. It would actually install a patch to block the Blaster worm (yes, some malware will actually patch your system against other malware, there is no honor among thieves 😂). 3:45 KRS1? Step into my VM, das da sound of da KGB. 6:03 This is because pretty much all webservers now require SSL which in turn requires newer cryptographic algorithms than XP has. There was a patch that provided some ECC algos to old Windows versions, but not enough to actually allow XP to use the modern internet. 7:32 REALLY‽ There's "no" reason to not update? None at alllll? 🤨 🙄 Okay, get a pen, this will be a long list… 1) New versions require new hardware 2) New versions make changes that break things like software you need 3) New versions change the UI which can be INFURIATING, especially when they destroy habituated productivity 4) New versions are RIDDLED WITH BUGS… Windows 10/11 patches create MORE bugs than they fix 5) New versions are UGLY (all rounded corners should be subject to capital punishment!) 6) New versions are usually incompatible with old hardware/hardware vendors can't/won't release new drivers 7) New versions require a bunch of work to start over from scratch 8) New versions can be outright BROKEN (like the numerous updates that WIPED PEOPLE'S FILES) 9) New versions have 7:50 Um, no, they're really not. The market-share of old systems is tiny. Hackers are NOT "constantly" looking for XP systems. Why would they try to hack someone who is too poor to upgrade to a new gaming rig with Windows 11? To what end? The only thing they're looking for is maybe old ATMs and government and military systems that are still running old systems (like the nuclear silos which still use _8" floppies!_ ) but not randos. (Yes, some hackers are still glory-hackers who like to do it for sport instead of for profit or espionage, but those are less common these days.) In fact, generally speaking, using an old system is MORE secure than using the latest one because hackers are LESS likely to bother trying to find the few people still using an old system. Moreover, most of the old system's bugs have already been found, the low-hanging fruit has been found and patched, which means the hackers have to work even harder to find bugs, which means more effort for less reward. Conversely, every new patch for Win10/11 brings a slew of NEW vulnerabilities and NEW ZERO-DAYS to quickly find and exploit and sell. Hackers spend most of their time reverse-engineering every new patch for new bugs. 😒 12:26 Ross Scott doesn't expect any company to support video-games forever, just to design the games FROM THE START to be able to allow people to do it themselves once the company wants to abandon it. (But that's anathema to capitalism which does NOT want people to continue playing old games they already bought, they want people to stop playing those and buy the latest game, especially if the latest game is just a MTX-delivery-device. Windows is no different; why do you think MS is pulling the plug, even SECURITY patches on Windows 10 that is so ubiquitous?) 15:01 Pft! DOS! Just grab a packet-driver for a 3COM 3C509 NIC, shove that BNC cable in, set up a token-ring LAN, and get Arachne up and running (or Lynx if ya nasty). "Upgrades" are not. 😒

Most people would benefit from running a 24/7 AV, or at the very least having something like Malwarebytes on stand by to scan every file they download; it should be second nature to run a 'just in case' scan on every downloaded file regardless of how long you've been in the tech space. I do it, I recommend to my friends that they do it, etc. Lots of people are silly and fall for simple attacks, like downloading what appears to be safe files and end up getting their account certs jacked.

Non advanced users probably should use an av. But the thing with avs is that depending on the company, they can bring more trouble than safety. Talking about some of those garbage ones that simply dont work well. Plus the extra hogging of system resources.. And an extra step of having to fight the av to let you do something if you were working with some obscure software and it finds your activity suspicious. Some av companies were involved in some very shady practices, like google levels of data collection. Most avs are subscription based and lack some advertised features if you dont pay. All that while an advanced user would never even have a use for it with their safety habits and tech literacy for example. Thats why Muta is against avs. I personally would call myself an advanced user and i use Kaspersky. I think its a good idea to have an av but that you shouldnt pick just anything without research

to your first point - that you can't do much online on XP anymore - you actually can. Legacy Update completely repairs Windows update and allows you to install updates intended for embedded copies of XP all the way up until 2019. Escargot lets you use Windows Live Messenger online again, and additionally there are many browsers still updated for XP, like Pale Moon, Mypal and Supermium, which bring the ubiquitous capabilities of web browsers to the nearly 23-year-old OS! suffice it to say there's a TON you can still do on XP in 2024, not that you should keep it on your home network. even if you run a VM, the term "virus" is literally a type of malware that can spread itself. don't kid yourselves, malware can escape virtual machines. finally, common sense is not a replacement for antivirus software, security updates, etc. also you used launch XP with IE 6 at around the 5 minute mark, you probably should have demonstrated XP service pack 3 if you wanted to give IE a fair chance at working lol

It is business users who have to worry about XP systems getting immediately compromised (that is why wannacry did so much damage, businesses had xp systems directly connected to the internet after EOL). Home users will need to reconfigure their network router to directly expose an XP system to the internet like configuring the XP system to be the firewall DMZ.
