This was really helpful. As someone who has used Mikrotik for a while this has always confused me. Also that presentation remote is awesome! So much better than those that use a laser pointer that you can never see in the video.

Instead of explaining 20+ times "software vlans are slow and eating CPU" it would have been a lot more useful to explain different scenarios of VLAN-mode in switch mode. Or the Actions possible.

so Lorenzo, on your last question: is there hardware available that can use multiple hw filtering /offload bridges?

Well if i get this right, using switch for vlans only benefits if u want inter-v lan communication, otherwise if u want your vlans to just provide internet access u can do it on the bridge since they will be routed anyway..Correct?

So did I understand this correctly: for given hardware: use "Switch" tab to create VLANs if available otherwise use "Bridge" tab and only if that does not work use "Interface" tab?

Also tried to understand the difference (except software/hardware) but was totally unhelpful. This simple thing for Cisco routers is extremely difficult in this mTik junky-box. No where to find real explanation about BridgeVLAN vs switchVLAN and why does HWswitch dies when you enable VLAN-filtering even though you set VLANs in Switch chip. Mikrotik will lose on a market because of this.

@@bobns509 Exactly, is extremly difficult to understand mikrotik vlan configuration....there is so many types of configurations and so many parts where zyou need to setup it. It should be more user friendly and trz to rebuild it like one standart configuration....1. step, create VLANs(10,20,30...) and second step....assign ports to VLANs...(depends on trunk or acces), that is all....if is there swich chip, it should be so clever and use switch if not, use cpu......

@@slightlyevolved Yes. The whole video of more than 30 minutes is dedicated to tell us that. Not to explain how-to setup VLAN but to repeatedly tell us that there is a hardware and software vlan. One of the worst educational video you can find on whole internet.

Very bad presentation. Till end I am still not sure if the bridge is must for switch VLAN or is it enough to set VLAN on switch and what are the useful scenarios for switch mode and for bridge mode. Waste of time for presenter, audience and youtube users. I believe that presenter has a knowledge but it's way of passing it to audience is wrong. Maybe he should go to do some real Studies on University to see how does passing knowledge is done.
