Playing with Paint Chips in my Grid Journal

Looking for a way to play with colors, new materials, and/or composition? Try experimenting by playing around in a grid journal! Why not sample it in 18 tiny paintings to give you an idea of what a larger series would look like. It's super quick, super fun, and SUPER helpful.
Materials used: Color shaper, watercolor sketchbook, acrylic paints, Neocolor II crayons, collage paper, and a dash of grit.

I haven’t done grids for years; I think you’ve inspired me to start again. When you’re testing the collage pieces I’ll be saying “Oh look, there, put it there” and, nope, you move onto somewhere else. As you say, we could all have identical supplies but would each create a unique collage. The hand of the artist always shows… As always, you’re an inspiration.

I took your grid journaling workshop and got so much out of it. Now I'm rewatching this to prep for teaching grid journaling to my summer camp kiddos this week. Thank you Jackie- You always inspire!

18 Brilliant tiny masterpieces. You have such an intuitive knack for placement, contrast and composition. Yes it's easy to say that you just "glue it down" and maybe it feels like that for you. Watching you work through these was mesmerizing, each one taking shape piece by piece. I could see any one of them as larger pieces that would be brilliant. What a wonderful gift (for me) to work through the Sunday night blues! Be well!

Love it when you do the small stuff -- lots of people do grid journals but I think you're the only one I've seen who treats each little pane as though it were a full-blown composition (which may be why it took you so long, especially since you didn't just grab the collage papers which would have made things a lot simpler). I've said this before, but I am

I'm up late working on 4x6 wood grids listening to your video and it's so good to hear you express thoughts, unknowns, and what you love is what you do ... moods swings etc just so much of what I go through . Makes me feel more level in myself that it's not insanity it's just the process. And so thanks to you I'm working in grids and enjoying the process and discoveries! Thank you so much. ❤❤

Love your videos Jackie! Also, I want to pass on the word that Golden has put out a ‘recipe’ for Nickel Azo Gold. 4 parts Transparent Red Iron Oxide to 1 part Nickel Azo Yellow. I haven’t tried it myself yet but on their video you can’t tell it apart from the original Nickel Azo Gold. 😊

Too funny we had a bedroom that needed to be painted right away. I went and got a bunch of swatches, long story short I ended up putting gesso on them and did a bunch of abstracts.

I think of artistic style akin to our signature. It just is and we discover it as we go. As always, I loved this video Jackie. I always look forward to what you will do. This grid journaling has really set my exploration to a whole new level and I learn so much from these exercises. Thank you Jackie for your generous content. <3

I love the results Jackie and this color combo is just beautiful. I started a grid journal inspired by you and I've got hooked. I cannot get hold of paint chips. But I have tons of collage papers and scraps that I use for collage. It really allows me to go wild. Sometimes the wild goes on to the 💩side, like that time I tried the yellows you're using here, which I absolutely love, but I had a bad day I guess :P and others I love the results. I love to devote a page to specific color combos, to try materials and colors that I don't really use, use some of those small tiny pieces of paper that I should have binned, you know... I usually do just 9 squares, 1 page, but it takes me hours! I find working on small formats quite challenging as the proportions and composition seem to be more important than when I use larger pieces of paper. I've also noticed that I tend to produce cool shapes that evolve from my initial asemic writing, and also 🤯... listen to this... I produce curvy abstracts as soon as I want to make something linear 🙃🤨 Looking forward to what you do next! Happy week. 💖

These are gorgeous, so much fun. Ive divided pages into 4, but will deffinately try the 2x2 grid. Just an observation, the far left bottom square had very little attention, but still a nice square, less is more sometimes 😊 Loved the video, thank you Jackie
