It’s improving, just perhaps not as much as we’ve seen in decades previous. Some things have gone backwards. 3D APIs got more fragmented, OpenCL stalled around 1.2 in cross platform capabilities, which only now getting back on track. And this is only within a very narrow cone of technology.

The fact that it perceives depth alone is cool enough but for the software to do that also? Probably wouldn't be so advanced on a typical 5gb game back then I'm guessing.

late since its 3 years ago, but kinect sends out depth data (basicly saying this pixel is this distance from the camera..) and looks like she has mapped it so it shows the distance (thats why it changes from 5 to 2 when her hand is close) then you just use a 3d code, and display the x,y pixel with z distance.
