Can we appreciate that dune runs on an 286

I played a lot of Wolfenstein back then and so did my son. Others that I liked were the Commander Keen series and A-10 Tank Killer. Configuring the memory setup could be quite fiddly. I had a menu system set up so the kids could select the games that they wanted to play and the batch files linked to the menu would set up the correct memory config before starting the game.

I remember Aces of Pacific. I even have it, in the form of a Aces collection sitting on the shelf. What? I don't have a disk drive to load the games so what else can I do with it?

You cant play the best classics on that machine, although I understand the nostalgia in creating it. I had a 486 Dx2 66 from Amd as my first Pc. I bought it in 1994 and could play Doom and Dune 2 quite fluently. Got my cdrom in 95 a four speed and borrowed dark forces from a friend. It went smooth, we played that game til the end. Warcraft, descent and Heretic. So many classics you cant play on a 386 :) I tried to play Dune 2 to a friend on their 386. 1 frame a sec at last Atreides mission. But we played, we played. :D I had my Amiga until 94, then I went for the PC because all my friends had one. It was the golden age of pc and network gaming. 4 man Doom was just another world, and also Heretic. UFO enemy unknown is a classic with Dune 2. Dune 2 can actually still be quite entertaining.

Doom/Doom 2, Dune 2, Heretic and Warcraft played great on our 386. We didn’t get a newer computer until 1996, so I was stuck trying to make things work on the 386. Even C&C and Warcraft 2 were surprisingly playable. Everyone is different but I consider the 386 era the best time of classic PC computing.

Ahh. the "good" old times. The video capture actually does some of these games a big disservice tbh. they look way better when you see them on a period correct CRT. The way they were intended to be played.

Yep I have modern flat display for my Amiga, and well it makes those games look plain ugly. While on CRT thats whole different case.....
