Playing PS2 Launch Games (20 YEARS LATER)

Ойындар

This year is the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Playstation 2.
As it's a console that means so much to me, I thought I'd journey back to the year 2000 to try out all of the games available at launch to see how they hold up today.

@@fawkkyutuu8851 I can see your point in 85-01. Those were some good times for gamers too. I just personally enjoyed the games of the mid 90s to mid 2000s more. They were just more of my cup of tea. By 2013, it really lost all its edge. I still had fun with the ps3 wii 360 run that lasted until 2012. Those years were still fun cause of the crazy multiplayer lobbies back then. Online today is too pussified. You can't talk trash without getting the death penalty now a days

The ps2 was the golden age of gaming. You could be a hard core gamer or casual it didn’t matter. The library was unbelievably massive full of classics. So many one hit wonder studios that created absolute masterpieces. We don’t see the independents anymore. All we see is the big franchises. Kids today really missed out.

  • @oraclejmt

    @oraclejmt

The golden age of gaming was from the 80's and topped with the PS2. It is also worthy to remember why the golden age started so early. It is mainly because of all the incredible arcade games, and the culture behind it, that spans from the 70's to around 2003.

  • @NEPats1289

@@oraclejmt I don’t disagree with that because the early years kicked off some of the best titles. My point is the technology of the ps2 coupled with the graphics and the overwhelmingly large library it had. It seems like all we get today are new versions of the franchises that are trendy rather than the independent masterpieces we got back then.

@@NEPats1289 Well there is some originality in the Xbox One / PS4 / Xbox SS / PS5 era, but you are right, - it is mostly based on franchises from previous times. Take Spiderman Miles Morales. A great game, except it is a known universe from a comic book from way back. You are completely right. - Then Gears Of War series on the Xbox platform. - It's not a new series. It started way back in the 00's. - And then the Tomb Raider Trilogy from the 10's. Not new, just re-releases of older franchise.

@@oraclejmt I guess at some point the well of ideas dries up too. I’d just like to see more remasters of old titles like Tony hawk 3 and 4. Maybe the SOCOM series. I read rumors of them making a new SOCOM for PS5 but those went away. Even original idea by rockstar like state of emergency, manhunt, the warriors, etc, we just don’t see that anymore. Or a company making one game (freedom fighters) which turned out to be a classic

Welcome back! I'm impressed that you managed to track down all the launch titles...... That's quite a feat! I got my first PS2 way back in December of 2001 for Christmas and the games I got for it I can remember to this very day. WWF Smackdown Just Bring It Silent Hill 2 Resident Evil Code Veronica X (Had Devil May Cry demo disc in it) The Mummy Returns Street Fighter EX3 Gran Tourismo 3 Ridge Racer 5 Tekken Tag Tournament. Final Fantasy X It was a wonderful Christmas. My parents spoiled me big time that year. I spent the whole day trying out all the games. It was amazing. I remember my whole family were really impressed by the Silent Hill 2 intro with James standing in front of the mirror. The graphics really stood out to them.

It really was. People who weren’t alive back then don’t realize how crucial it was. DVD players were not cheap. DVD was becoming the standard for media, but prices hadn’t yet adjusted for the average family to be able to comfortably afford the ability to play them. The PS2 worked as well as anything else on the market and it didn’t need an expensive and completely unnecessary (but still required solely because of greed) peripheral like the Xbox.

The first weekend of November, I got incredibly lucky. I usually rented video game consoles every other week. I went to my usual video store and the store owner was almost a friend to my family at this point. She knew how much I loved games. My dad and I went to see if they had a PS2, she said it was already out but that it should come back today. It was a matter of first come first serve. I kid you not, the guy who rented it took it back 5 minutes after we entered the store. It’s a weekend I will never forget. SSX, Fantavision and BUST A GROOVE 2. Plus it was our first experience seeing DVD quality on our CRT television. I still play these games every winter after 20 years. They left me dazzled and hold a special place in my heart.

Not sure how well PAL hardware mods put within reach NTSC online gameplay but there are a lot of members in PS2 Rewired/PS2 Online Discord groups who will help navigate and answer questions.... ✏️ Also, outside the vein of your FIFA and, yet, in the vicinity: PAL region's Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (patch required to connect) and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (patch required to connect same languages other than English but none supporting cross-region play), online gameplay can be enjoyed again for up to 4 players - requiring as few as 2 PS2s since it supported 2-players per console. 👍 Same goes for Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 for the NTSC-U/C.

The PS2 had a ton of games launch with it, so did the PS1 if I remember correctly. Way better than PS3 and PS4. I mean even the PS5 didn't have much launch with it. Demon Souls and Astros Playroom that's it. Back in the PS2 days developers took risks, you had smaller studios pumping out all kinds of different games. Ya some were tripe but some were gems. I guess the indie studios are wearing the innovation mantle these days.

Also amazed here by the visual upgrade Ridge Racer V presented alongside its frame rate. My only disappointment was looking forward to a reasonable expectation of them carrying over PS1 Serial I-O system link feature - as per 2-4 player R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 and 2 player Ridge Racer Revolution - either by using the PS2's new 4-pin Firewire "s400"/"iLink" system-link and/or, better yet, the up-and-coming ethernet network adapter that could have opened up Ridge Racer V to some online play if not at least legacy-supported LAN-play and, ergo, LAN-tunneling to this day if they had explored that latter option.

When PS2 was launced in 2000, I had just previous year, 1999 bought the PS1 and enjoyed playing it's Gran Turismo & the newly released in 2000, Gran Turismo 2 + other games, so I was in no hurry to buy PS2. In fact I though I'd skip the PS2 era, and bought the PS3 Slim in 2009. Then in 2017 decided to buy after all a used PS2, original Fat model and immediatly I started regretting, that I didn't buy it earlier. What an great system and nice looking games :) Feels pretty big step forward from PS1 and the step from PS2 to PS3 feels smaller. I like racing games and have for example GT3 and GT4 for PS2, also the motorbike game Tourist Trophy, made by Polyphony Digital, who makes the excellent Gran Turismo games as well. Gotta find the Ridge Racer V, looks really fun game with beautiful graphics. I have Ridge Racer Type 4 for PS1 and loved playing it, it has amazingly beautiful graphics for PS1 as well. Really enjoying PS2 games :)

No installation, no updates, no annoying questions about personal data or "please connect to the internet in order to play this single player campaign", no trophies or achievements, just playing that one game that you have inserted. I hope you continue with your videos - your reviews are fantastic, a perfect length that allows them to be broad and addictively short but still thorough enough. I share your love of this era of gaming - I finally got a second-hand console from C.E.X. (you have them in England too) back in 2018 and have been building my collection and playing the hell out it since then. I love how you try to be fair on even the weaker games - so many people write off the PS2 now, as if they don't understand how far back it dates now. I hope to see your take on a whole range of games I've recently played myself, or have cherished since all those years ago. I empathise with your own inclination to enjoy them, even when they don't quite hold up. Some, upon replaying, I have realised are objectively poor games, but somehow the sheer charm of them makes playing them a blast anyway. The Scorpion King, for one, comes to mind: insanely repetitive and unfair towards the player, but somehow additive as hell.

Great video! I got super lucky and got the PS2 Xmas 2000; my uncle's wife worked at K-Mart (department store back in the day in the states) and she held one in the back for me. I was already planning on getting it the next year with a few games, but on Xmas day I saw it under the tree and literally ran around the house with it screaming! Granted, I didn't have any games for it at the time (Fantavision would've been a great in-box game now that I think about it), but I didn't care. I was just happy to have the damn thing! I rented games for a while until I was able to actually purchase some, which was around the next year. Tekken Tag Tournament, SSX, and Moto GP were probably my favorite launch titles; Ridge Racer 5 looked good, but it wasn't as fun to play as Ridge Racer Type 4 imo. Great console, I don't have the fatty one anymore but still have my slim one.

I 100%'d Wild Wild Racing as a kid and imo, one of the most enjoyable games that we owned. We had both the steering wheel and the controller, I personally perferred the controller but I really liked that game. The side missions/mini arcade modes with grades were fantastic, and I really struggled to get the perfect score on some of them. I usually drove like ass but one day I figured out how to drift and it basically changed everything. Yes, the handles suck on some of the cars but that enables you to drift quite a bit, which can save an enourmous amount of time if done properly. Other that than, fantastic video. Just wanted to mention that I personally found the yellow outline extremely distracting, not sure what you were going for there.

22:40 - It's literally a port+expansion of the NAMCO's GP500 arcade machine. You get 2 more tracks (Donington Park & Motegi weren't in the arcade), the grid goes from 1998 to 1999 and the playable motorbikes go from the 3 from the top manufacturers (Honda NSR500, Suzuki RGV500 & Yamaha YZR500) to the whole 1999 grid. Also, the game is very arcadey in every sense, including how the rest of the grid either gets boosted or slowed down depending on where you start to avoid having to render too many motorbikes.

Might have to pick up all the consoles that I gave away, as a teen. Ps1,2 N64, Super Nintendo and Dreamcast. Miss childhood gaming. It’s incredible how far gaming has come. Compare Alex The Kid to Red Dead Redemption 2 and its mind blowing. Go back even more to Commodore and Amstrad and you’ll possibly lose your mind. Can’t remember what of those last 2 systems had the green screen and games on tape cassette, plus games was as cheap as £1 and my local outside market, had a game stall and it was such a joy to be able to buy a game or 2 every week. Then my dad got me some adapter to enable colour screen. You could even copy a friends game using a regular double cassette player/recorder. I remember getting Super Nintendo with this converter that would let me play American games. My first games was American version of Street Fighter 2, pal mario kart and super Mario bundled with console. Not quite sure why my dad got me the converter. Maybe I was able to get some games early. Oh man, I could go on all day. Kinda miss the joy I got from gaming as a kid. I play a bit now but no more then an hour or 2 every other day. Not as much spare time and I just kinda grew out of gaming.

Eternal Ring was the best launch title. Even with the bad mechanics. You just gotta see past that. The story, music, and making rings was a lot of fun in my opinion. And another highlight was figuring out how to grind the raptors in the forest and solving the forest puzzle and figuring out how to beat the queen bees with the 20 foot stingers. Pretty scary. Also thoroughly enjoyed the bonus dungeon. On one of the floors you can farm cockatrices by continuing to re-enter the level. You gain at least a level every time you kill one no matter how high your level is and using a mist ring makes them light work.
