Well, Steve Vai ended up writing a song for one hand when he had shoulder surgery, so why not? Turn lemons into lemonade!

Watching Steve play with one hand was amazing. Guthrie Govan is scary too.

Prayers for a quick recovery! Cool video....I'm going to work on my left hand technique. I like the sound of the other strings joining the party. Reminiscent of Alan Holdsworth.

Nicely laid out, Bill, and without ever mentioning the technical terminology (legato) until very near the end (a good pedagogical methodology, speaking as an educator [grin]). This fretting hand development is sooo important for getting the smoothest possible changes from note to note and chord to chord in guitar phrasing. It’s not all about the speed, but it darn sure helps if you are trying to develop some speed in your guitar learning journey. While not stating it, your method here also eliminates most of the arguments I have heard from so many students who complain about or are concerned about hand size: “I can’t do ‘that’ (some certain technique) because my fingers are too small/big/short/fat…” You can experience, here, just how unimportant that notion is. If you can make notes and change notes (at least a little) smoothly with only your fretting hand, you have just unlocked a huge range of possibilities in your playing, your phrasing, your expressively! How wonderful and powerful is that?! Glad you shared this. Best to you (and your doctors!) as you proceed through the repair & recovery work!

I wish you a successful operation, I also have a problem with the fingers of my left hand, my doctors are mostly classmates from high school. They went on to medical school and I went to economics. But they propose a too radical and even a bit risky solution for me. I wish you all the best. Greetings Pavel CZ.👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸

You'll need help gettin your guitar on and off, can't do all that with one hand. I've been hammering on and off strings and chords kinda like you showed here for most of my 60 years playing guitar. Wishing you a quick recovery Bill! 🙏🏼

I had a traumatic hand injury a couple of years ago on my left hand. It has changed my way of playing guitar. Right now I am just trying to gain strength and callouses. Hope your recovery is good. I tried playing left hand, but brain couldn't accept it.

Very cool! Jennifer Batten did a lot of things like this, but she would use two hands to do eight-finger tapping with hammer-ons and pull-offs. I think she has some exercise books that might be useful to some people interested in similar work to what you're doing. I hope the surgery goes well. Thinking of you! :)

You might want to try your hand at a MIDI controller keyboard and use computer-assisted grooving, like with scaler 2 and Paul stretch. I’ve got a few synths as fallback if I get problems with my arms/hands. I have a similar pain in my right elbow as well. 😕

Watch Steve Vai's video called "Knappsack." One-handed wizardry. Back in 2009 I had surgery on my left wrist. That's my fretting hand, so I literally couldn't play for 2 months.

I always found it strange that standard guitar are set up for the non domiannt hand to do the fretting, the fretting hand does way more work overall.

Hope you recover quickly. I had carpal tunnel release surgery on my left wrist in June 2023 and it's taken a little over six months to fully recover all sensation in my fingers. With your splint would you at least be able to hold an ebow? :)
