Playing Congas and Bongos Together - Pro Tips

This shows you how you can play congas and bongos together in a small percussion setup. Congas and Bongos are two very common Latin percussion instruments used in many styles of music, from traditional Salsa to Pop and Sound Tracks. This lesson was inspired by Steve, one of our Patrons, who asked for some setup and rhythmic advice on this topic.

Kalani, your performance on The Rain Must Fall at the Yanni 1993 Live in Acropolis was the best percussion accompaniment ever. I ve kept listening and watching that for 20 years. Karen's violin solo wouldn't be that touching without your percussion line. THE BEST EVER.

Now and Zen. That was a nice little bonus something to chew on for a bit while still soaking in this awesome video. Thank you "Steve" for asking the question, and thank-you Kalani for the awesome video ! My greatest challenge is getting the two hands doing their own things. So this is another great video to help with that, what seems to me, impossible thing.

I like that you mentioned the stands. I do currently have mine set up in the second position you talked about. They're raised to play while standing. I like the idea of switching them around to have the higher tones of the bongos in the front of the congas. I'm going to have to give that a try. Good video man!

Hey, Kalani. That was a great video. Do you think you can do a video with the Bongos on a stand in the front of the congas. That’s how I play them. I want to know how they sound when, you play them that way. Thanks bro.

Awesome thanks for this video I’m just starting out with the “bongas” combo and trying to work out which is the best way to set them up so this was very helpful. Do you recommend sitting down over standing up?

I want to learn to play bongos and congas. Do you recommend focusing on one or does learning both simultaneously work better? ie. Are the skills transferrable if I focus on one, or are the techniques totally different that it's actually better to learn bongos and congas at the same time?
