Great project! That wood is fantastic. The one thing I might add is one or two finger holes, so you can grasp the cards. But I suppose just turning the box over to get the cards out works well, too. Thanks.

Finger holes is a great idea Barb. Would definitely make getting the cards out a little easier. Might have to thicken the walls of the box to add the finger holes though. Awesome idea. @@acutabove_woodworkings I'm a true wood working beginner. But, right now I'm tackling a huge project. I'm in the process of building a catio off my sun room. It is full of imperfections, but I'm enjoying the build. A friend of mine is helping me now to put on the metal roof. It has been a big challenge, but I have learned a bunch of new skills. I want to tackle more intricate things, like you do, so you might be hearing from me.

Hello Ken while I am aware that in the end the video was sped up but still your wood burning skills are awesome. The facial features for the King as well as all the other little details on this feature are rivaling a CNC for gosh sakes Harleymike/chicago

Thanks for the kind words Michael. I worried about wood burning on a piece of wood with such a striking grain. I was concerned that I would make a mistake and ruin it but then I thought, what the heck and did it anyway. Turned out for the best as I really like the final results. Hi Kenny! I had no idea there was such a thing as flame box elder. Really gorgeous. And, I had been lead to believe that when you cut out the center by rounding going wide when approaching the corner and then back cutting would be cheating. I thought you were always doing the quick 90 degree turn and continuing on. Makes me feel a little better. Love the box top. Have done a little word burning in my past. Regards, Bill

It depends on the results you are after Bill. If you wish for the corner to have a sharp peak, a tight corner with the blade isn't going to do it. Even with the finest of blades, the corner will be ever so slightly rounded. So if you want the sharp corners, cut it wide and come back for the trim after. Thanks for tuning in. I hope this helps.

I tried something similar years ago but wasn't really a fan of it and would much rather wood burn the images into the stock. That being said, there's nothing wrong with adhering the image via decoupage either. I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with. Thanks for tuning in.

Kenny, nice project. The piece of wood you used sure was a good looking piece. Your comfort zone is a lot greater than mine. No way would I attempt wood burning the card face on the cover after putting that work into it and chance (and no doubt surely) messing up that nice cover. Nice work my friend.

Believe you me Paul, those thoughts ran through my mind when I was debating burning the King into the cover. I worried about messing it up and then thought "what have I got to lose?". As it turned out, I really like the end result and I'm glad that I didn't let my concerns stop me from pushing the design further. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave a comment. The clamping system that I use on the bench is a Veritas Quick Release Wonder Dog. They are absolutely incredible and keep your work very secure.
