PLAYING ASTRIDE! New Horse Game (Early Access) | Pinehaven

Does Astride have what it takes to be the next best horse game? To be better than Star Stable?
Today we play the EARLY ACCESS release of Astride! This new horse game isn't much at the moment but I still believe that Raidho games can pull off the horse game of our dreams. Admittedly the EA was pretty bare bones: with not much to do, no music or sound effects, no rider, no bridle, bugs and no tutorial. I believe they had deadlines to meet for funding and so a release was rushed out, and many people have been left disappointed and a little frustrated. But there are a lot of mechanics, assets and features that they have created which weren't included in the EA, so while the current state is no where near worth the price tag, I truly believe as time goes on and this gets updated, that it will be.
This video is family friendly.

I honestly think they released the Early Access to early, it does not mean it is a bad thing but it also could be. It really depends! If they were rushed to release the game tho it is understandable with the funding. I think the animations and coat colors along with the patterns are lovely. The game is in a very early raw stage and it looks pretty regardless. I saw a few bugs here and there and one that mainly ruined the gameplay "had to restart the game" I really think they will make this game great in the future with the time and love ♥

The ea doesn't have much for the price charged. TORR and UTHG have a much better demo than this one and it's free. TORR still managed to overcome by being one person doing everything. I think it wasn't a good idea this ea. A better crafted free demo could have caught the attention of more supporters for patreon. I don't know, I'm a little disappointed.

It looks nice but they put it out to early, has potential but 25€ is a bit much for a game that is very bare bones
I think this game was released way too early and the price is too high at the moment. It has potential but right now it's too unfinnished to justify the pricing and way too many game breaking bugs and missing features (like a rider). 😄 There's also a big risk that this game will not be fixed if they run out of funding. This game could be fixed if they had a company funding and resources but as more of an indie game, I see too many signs that it wont be fixed or if it is, it will take a looong time (years).

I get where you’re coming from but given how dedicated and passionate the team are, and all the stuff they have shown on the discord is already well on its way to being finished, I have a lot of hope for this game.

You have to keep in mind that they only released the game this early because they had a deadline set by the NFI (Norwegian Finance Initiative), who’s funding the game. They pushed the early access back as far as they could to bring in as many features as possible, but in the end, a deadline is a deadline. Astride is still in extremely early access and a huge W.I.P. I do agree that the price is a bit bold for the current content, but you won’t have to pay again later on. With that in mind, they also have to fund further development. The devs are working hard and doing their best to bring more content into the game. Incase you’re a Patreon supporter, you may already know this, but game development isn’t easy. They’ve had to overcome a lot of struggles and I think they’re doing a good job so far, especially considering the small size of their team. (Edit: sorry for the essay lol)

@@error.101 I understand and hope for the best for them, but it's just hard to recover after getting so many bad reviews on Steam. They should have released it for cheaper price first, since it's in really early stages, and be transparent about it beforehand. I red that they had to start over few times which delayed the process. It still does not justify to sell it for full price at launch and ask buyers to trust that it will be better over time. Launch was not good for them but I do hope they can recover and that it will be one day that top horse game it was ment to be.

Honestly, as a game designer student, I'm really proud to see an indie game at this price. Modeling, sculpting and animating in 3D is a bit complex and to be THAT good takes a lot of effort. We're obviously looking for a little more polish. As this is an early access game made by an indie company, we can't demand that in short time. Good games take time to make, especially HORSE games that are so tricky. The best we can do to help the team is reporting bugs, giving suggestions and a lot of support, the more motivated the better for the game and for us :)

Explanation on dun. So dun is a dilution of a coat, meaning if you add dun on a coat color it will lighten up the coat, give a dorsal stripe and leg stripes. For example if you add dun on black you'll have a grulla (or some people call it grullo, not an english speaker, so mix the two up frequantly)!

Oh and be carefull with the grey! It'll work just as in real life, slowly, with age, your horse will turn completely white (or fleabitten if you choose so)
I think the game is just beautiful But as you know is not finished yet I love the horse gaits and coat color marking etc...
The fancy canter turning on yourself is a pirouette😘 I feel a tutorial was more than necessary!😅 I got really lost ! For me it felt a bit too early for this release. I felt it could have been more beneficial to wait and have more content or something more stable or just let it for kickstarter and patreon. I knew what I was getting but I don’t know, it felt too soon. But I forgot they had a deadline to work with! Thank you for the reminder!! Overall, the quality they’re aiming for and the multiplayer aspect is looking good and I am very excited for it😊 as you said, if they continue like that, we will have a great game in 4years 😊 I just hope the community understands that 😌
Just in response to a few questions: The gait you were talking about was a collected canter -- not quite a pirouette as a pirouette isn't just a small circle, it's the horse actively turning on its hind. Piaffe is the highest level of collection in trot, preceded by passage and collected/working trot. But you are right that you want the horse to "be uphill" and for the energy to come from the back, in every gait, and that horse is looking a little front heavy. Also dun is a coat dilution, not a coat in itself. And just as a little fyi, the difference between a gallop and a canter isn't just the speed but the "beat" -- canter is three beats (outer back leg - inner back+outer front leg - lastly inner front leg) whereas a gallop is four beats with each hoof striking down individually (outer back - inner back - outer front - inner front)! So excited to see where the devs go from here! :))

A short stride but active canter is the best for high/vertical jumps, meanwhile a longer stride is better for wide jumps (for example: oxers)
So far Tales of Rein Ravine is the game I'm most hopeful for among the great horse games in development: that game is already amazing in the demo, such realistic and challenging riding. Astride sounds promising but I'm unfortunately not convinced their funding and audience interest will carry. I do root for them and I'm very frustrated that the same thing keeps happening to horse games, keeps me from getting excited about it.

TOR is so good, so complex, I just love the path they're taking for the game. Unfortunally, horse games in general have very low audience and it makes me depressed :(
I don’t mean to be rude by saying this, but they’re already struggling with funding and you think this game will be great in 3-4 years? It’s unlikely that they will be able to fund development for that long if they don’t start pushing out gameplay updates immediately and turn around reviews at the very least. I love what they’re doing too and root for them but content-wise, things aren’t looking that great at the moment and I don’t think they were planning on turning Astride into a live-service type of game. I’m a bit cautiously optimistic but would love to see the game succeed.

25€ for a pre-alpha game with basically 3 types of content (horse customization, multiplayer riding around, jumping prototype) is just rough, especially after the game has been funded for some time now. Early access is estimated to end in 2026, but to be honest, as a player you never have 100% security that the game will be finished and turn out as promised. I was really looking forward to his game, but for now I will not buy it yet before I haven`t seen some progress.
Info for some people that ar not on dc and are maybe confused why it is at this stage and not further by mathidle: "When Green Horse joined our team, we had to start over with the game, as what we had back then wasn't very feasible. This was in March 2022. And somewhere in summer/fall, Unity DOTS finally came out, but much earlier than we ever anticipated. Unity DOTS (while I'm not very great at explaining game engines and programming) essentially offers a lot more for developers and would open the door for more documentation (which will help future new developers to the team), but also has features that would help develop the game faster. Moving the game from Unity to Unity DOTS was not possible, so we had to make the decision to scrap it (again) and start fresh. I'm impressed with how much Green Horse has accomplished with the horse animation system and the striding so far, and I'm excited to see what the future will bring. I don't want this to act as an excuse, but an explanation as to why the development hasn't gone as quickly as we initially wanted. Hopefully, we will be able to hire more hands on the programming department which will shift the development into high gear." ♡

Thats... concerning
I like the graphics, but as a pc gamer, this is the only game that lacks so much content as an 'early access.' It's more like a demo than an early access...actually, I've played a lot of demos that have more content than this for free.
With the canter they have, it reminds me a lot of how my quarter horse moves. It's a super comfortable gate, but they are definitely supposed to push off from the back end and stay collected. this game does a good job of showing it as the horse still lifts it's shoulders up a little and engaging the back end behind them! i'm sad they won't have stock horses in the game (tha'ts currently announced) but they have talked about western riding in their DLC, and I'm so so excited to see them grow with this game and develop and push it further!!
I have a feeling it’s so realistic that it’s tricky to play without controls and a tutorial! Looked like you need a short, quick canter and to be lined up centrally with the jump for a nice jump! The controls are aiming for more finesse and (literal) control over movement than just spamming a button and using a joystick which I love! It’s so realistic, the foundations are fantastic. The animations are the best I’ve seen! More so than RDR2 even, it just needs some polish! This is so early and such a small team I think this is on track to be the best realistic equestrian RPG to date. Xx
'I can see through the floor, thats nice'😂😂😂 Love this game it honestly sounds amazing cant wait to try it if I do❤❤❤❤
This is so cool, I love all of your video’s!
it shows the lack of horse games that we get hyped over something that looks like it was throw together in roblox xD
I couldn’t get to faster gaits when I played 😂 I didn’t know the controls! Seeing you do it made me so jealous
The canter is supposed to activate the back legs, but as far as I can remember Astride creators told us that it’s part of you’re horse’s training that you will have to improve with your horse, so the gaits will look more advanced.
Hi abi! I’m such a big fan!❤ love you smmmm❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree with your opinion in the desc. Very bare bones early access with a high price tag - compare that to WolfQuest: Anniversary Edition, whose early access had territory keeping and I think finding a mate and now replayability with a functioning pup raising system - this is quite unimpressive. I think this should be either free or like, 1-10 dollars. But I do wish for it's success, and hopefully it won't have an outrageous price once fully released.

To my understanding, Dun is closer to a dilute? Where you can have the coat color, (bay, for example) and then have dun at the same time, where it will usually mute the coat color as well as add striping on the legs and a stripe down the back.
I’m so exited to play astride but I haven’t got it yet I still need to buy it.
I feel like a bit of a wimp right now for legitimately tearing up at just the horse creation, but this is *everything* I wanted as a kid out of all those PS1 and PS2 horse games like Let's Ride, Barbie, Gallop Racer, heck I even tried Breeder's Cup (hated it, but I wanted the customization so I gave it a good go) games and all that? Omg... I can't believe someone actually made it happen. This is the coolest thing to see! ;-;

I'd like to say after reading some comments, I don't know much about the team (how big the team is, what their lives are like, what their scheduling is like around regular work, etc) but with the graphics most expect out of games today, it is NOT unreasonable to take at least 3-5 years just on development alone, not including any story or dialogue or sound. If they're a tiny indie team, they're probably working on this alongside full-time jobs and it may even be costing them their jobs. Again, I don't know much about the team, but I do know about game design. A big studio nowadays (MINUS CRUNCH) should be able to release a game between 3-5 years being paid full-time as that is their job to build and release a game. And indie game? 3-5 roughly for development, another 2+ for refinements, ADR, music, sound effects, QC, testings, betas (which require more work afterwards), prepping for additional or bonus content, special edition items and what-not if they go that route. Video games do not normally take 1-2 years to release. If they do, that's a team that's put on Crunch (12+hr days of working non-stop) from start to finish. If you want a good game that will hold up and last, let them work on it at their own pace. There's obviously deadlines to try to meet, but good quality games are not single year projects. Most games take even longer than 5 years. They deserve patience.
Hii abi.See you on the live gurl!❤
For me with the jumping i actually need to time the canter/stride perfectly i ride and jump irl too so that might be the case. But then again the two front hoofs should land in the white circle on the ground, otherwise you can just count strides :D
The animations are beautiful!!
Could you continue doing Realistic Roleplays in RRD2? Love ur vids ❤
Honestly, I don't mind that it's still a bit basic or broken right now. Your theory about needing a deadline for funding purposes makes a lot of sense to me, and I think it'll be exciting to be on the ground room floor as a player and see how the game develops in real time.

Lol I saw how you were supposed to jump 😂, there was a jump with a white dot at the base of it and then a circle about the jump I think that's how you do it lol😅
Some of this tack reminds of the Raymond equestrian center for sims 3 horse mods
All horses balance and carry themselves in motion differently. Some horses in a canter will pull themselves with the front and push themselves in the back while galloping. Personally, I like the front driven canter as it adds some realistic variety and character from other horse games. Also, statistically all horses carry 60-65% of their entire weight on their front legs and shoulders. So again it would still make sense to drive itself from the front in certain gaits. Hope this cleared up any confusion :)
one quetion abt astride,do u need a good computer to run it?
the jumping doesn't seem to be connected to the gaits but instead to the horses speed :) your horse was much too slow the first few jumps & as you sped up, it looked a lot better!
