to me it looked like it you want to surf pointing upstream the half slice is the boat, but if you want to spin around more etc, then the playboat rules

I agree but there's a bit more emphasis on how fast the boat surfs on the wave. Plan B is so much faster which means it is easier to get on and if more stable so it can get to different parts of the wave. They are both great and which one is better depends on the wave characteristics. I think on this wave the Plan B was more fun but recently Shepperton got to 7 gates and the project X was better for that.
