Play the puck better with these 3 Drills - Ice Hockey Goalies | Dahan Goaltending (Episode #10)

Спорт

Nick Dahan covers the differences of "pushing," passing and shooting pucks. The first drill teaches how to properly stop pucks behind the net and deal with pressure. The second drill demonstrates how to play pucks when catching them and handling them in motion. The third drill helps create the proper techniques for " pushing" and when to "shoot" pucks.
3 key teaching moments:
- Behind the Net Puck-Control Drill - see 1:19
- Catching & Playing Pucks in Motion Drill - see 2:49
- Pushing Pucks Gently or Clearing the Zone Drill - see 5:13
The puck-handling segment of the 2021 Montreal Summer Weekend Camp is held at the Complexe Sportif Bell.

Extremely helpful! As a goalie myself, playing the puck has been a struggle and I’ve been focusing a lot on it recently. I’m doing better but will also bring these tips into practice and try them out :)

Nick, your videos are awesome as always - you ever decide to do anything on the other side of the pond in the UK make sure I know (And if I ever take a trip to Montreal I will defo hit you up) Stick handling is something that both me and my kids struggle with - I will work some of these drills into our warmups

I am really struggling to lift the puck higher than about shin height. I try to have the puck on the heel of my stick but having trouble getting power behind it.

God I'm a terrible stickhandler in goal. My biggest issue, I shoot righty staking out so everything is "backwards".

when you say use the heel do you mean to shoot it off the heal or roll it from the heel to the toe?

Can you talk a little about equipment and how it effects playing the puck, I have so little mobility on the ice, but i can’t do any smaller in size.

If you can’t move because your equipment is too big, you can do a smaller size. Typically we see goalies wearing too big of chest protectors and pants. Gear is entirely customizable, and I encourage you to see a rep at a hockey store with your gear and ask their opinion. Bigger gear won’t help you stop more pucks if you can’t move freely and battle.

Is there a similar video, but with full right goalies? I'm a former regular goalie, and I would love to see if there are any difference doing these drills as a full right goalie.

Just the flip the video horizontally. Just kidding, the same concepts apply to full-right goalies.

I feel like I can't grip the stick with my glove hand. Like it can't physically wrap around the stick...

What happens if the puck is off the ice along the boards but coming in on your back hand though? Need to cover every scenario here.

When the puck is bouncing or coming off the glass, whether it’s coming to your backhand or forehand, you need to get your entire body on the boards & glass, similar to a post stance. Once the puck hits you, quickly move to position two by getting it off the boards and in front of you to then move the puck accordingly. You must be good at the fundamentals (i.e., moving out of the net to stop pucks along the ice & how to push them) before you go and work on different scenarios.

shooting thumb up is good, but should also learn thumb down shooting. I learned old school and can shoot a puck half way down ice till it hits.. It's a lost art, but comes in handy when playing off the boards - which is another lost art. good video thou, played for 30 years plus..
