Play the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill (For Free!)

Ойындар

This week is the anniversary of a rather obscure Revolutionary War battle that British commander Sir Henry Clinton once called "the most important victory of the whole war." We'll let you be the judge of that as we offer up a free wargame scenario for the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill. Fought April 25, 1781 and also known as "Second Camden," this small engagement pitted two skilled commanders against each other in rural South Carolina. Given the size of the battle, it's a perfect introductory scenario if you're just starting out with AWI wargaming!
Visit us at www.LittleWarsTV.com for a FREE COPY of the scenario, including special rules, a map, orders of battle, and unit labels. This is designed for our "Live Free or Die" rules but can be easily converted to any game system you prefer. Can you succeed where Nathanael Greene failed?
If you'd like to see Josh & Greg play the entire game at the club, we've unlocked this exclusive, 90-minute bonus video on our Patreon page for everyone to enjoy! Little Wars TV is known for highly edited wargame reports, but this video gives you a seat at the table for the whole gaming session--complimentary dram of Scotch included!

Back in 1984 I was able to sell the idea of the battle of Hobkirk's hill to game designers workshop for 800 dollars. I had designed the game in 1981. I saw my game turned into a hex map and cardboard chits but never saw it in stores and GDW stated they were now working on other things. I don't know how many boxes were made or where they are now.

Many thanks for another free scenario to add to the collection. Have painted just short of 1,000 10mm Pendraken figures for these rules so keep the scenarios coming.

Greg, Hobkirk Hill forced the British to give up their base at Camden SC. Camden, like modern day Columbia SC now, was the major road network hub for all points north and west of Charleston. Logistically without Camden the British no longer had any chance to supply operations into the SC back country, into North Carolina or points further north. The loss of this key road junction ment the next closet base of supply was all the way back in Charleston SC where they pretty much began the southern campaign in May 1780. So in other words it set them back over a year from whence they began and all they had to show for it were several indecisive victories and two, now three when counting Hobkirk, significant losses.

Thanks for this, looking forward to playing it. Since we're doing slightly more obscure battles I have a request! I grew up out East going to all the big battlefields. Last year I moved to Oklahoma. Discovered a battlefield an hour from me, sometimes known as the Gettysburg of Indian territory. It's the battle of Honey Springs, was the largest battle in what is now Oklahoma. I don't have civil war miniatures yet, but thought you guys might be interested in looking into it, if only for the obscure history.

I would love a video about how to base miniatures that you buy that don’t come with bases. Like where you get them, how to make your own, etc. I just bought some 18mm Napoleonics but unsure of basing.

Great question...lots of different methods used by members of the club here. Some make their own with heavy mat board (like you'd find in a framer's shop) and many purchase bases from an online company called LITKO (they sell bases in various sizes and materials). A few guys here 3D print their own bases. There are many other companies aside from LITKO that sell MDF and laser cut bases, too. The tougher question is always what size bases to use, as we generally try to pick "generic" basing that will work for multiple rule systems.

For Napoleonics (mine are a mix of 15 & 18mm) I use pre=cut steel bases from Wargames Accessories. They are sturdy and if you use magnetic sheets they make storage/transport very easy. They have a myriad of sizes and are reasonably priced. I get mine thru Old Glory, but I'm sure you can find them elsewhere. The actual bases you use depends on how your opponents are based. We''ve been using the old Empire system since the 1980s and have not gone thru any re=basing headaches. As long as both sides are based the same it's all good.
