Cheers for that!
The Dice Tower just did a top 10 list of games that they think SHOULD be in the BGG Top 10. In the video, Tom made a comment that the BGG list of games get voted on by the people, and they can have both positive and negative votes, so people who really like a game get a lot of positive votes, and games people hate get down votes; but the problem is (according to Tom) is that the list has a ton of very heavy games that have a very devoted following (lots of up votes) but that people who will never play the game, because they're too heavy or whatever, don't vote them down, they just don't play them at all. So you end up with a ton of very heavy games that appeal to a relatively small percentage of board gamers getting on the list. I think the exact same theory can be applied to the plethora of war games on the top 1000 list...people don't give bad ratings to games they will never play, they only give bad ratings to games they play and don't like. Since most casual games, most mid-weight board gamers and most die-hard board gamers don't play any (classic) war game...those games don't accumulate any negative votes to offset the positive votes by the small, but incredibly devoted cadre of war gamers out there. So you end up with a top 1000 list that is full of very divisive games that appeal to only small segments of the gaming community. Games that are more universally played, and appeal to wider audiences, get plenty of love, but, for example, a heavy board gamer might trash a commercially popular game like Ticket To Ride, because it's so light, and they consider themselves a tried-and-true-hobby-gamer-that-only-plays-dry-Euros...so it builds up a lot of hate votes. Just something to consider.
@msmilder25

I use "votes" in my comment, but it's really how people rank the game. People rank games they play, not games they would never touch in a million years. So many games climb up the list strictly based on the opinions of people who love the game, since not many people try those games if they aren't already in love with that style of game to begin with. That's my point, and Tom's as well, I believe.
@TheBrothersMurph
Жыл бұрын
100% agree here the entire top 1000 and certainly the top 200 games are nowhere near to being a good metric of what the "average gamer" would be into. You're so right I have no interest in those war games but I'm not gonna go give them 1 ratings, I'm just not going to interact with them at all. I love that they made that list I think it's a cool idea. If you're on BGG to the point that you are ranking your games and leaving written reviews and such, you are already WAY invested in this hobby. And the general amount of heavy games so highly ranked reflects that fanaticism more so than something like Ticket to Ride which is objectively better for more people
Congratulations on 1000 videos gents. That is incredible. You have definitely brought som smiles and laughter to me and my kids even. They loved your board game workout video. Keep up the excellent work. Here is to the next 10,000 videos for the Brothers Murph!

Love you guys and what you do in this space! Your ideas are always fun and interesting. Random idea: Would it be interesting to have a mini marathon of one specific game to test how many plays it takes before you are over it? Take an hour long game that you like and effectively test in a short span of time how the replayability holds up. Obviously it isn't exactly indicative of normal play, but it could be interesting to see how different games hold up to back to back repeat plays. Mike said he would play cascadia "all day, every day" and it got me wondering how true that might be in practice :)

Thanks guys! A new idea challenge... Each of You start at ranking 1000. Name a better ranked game and get 1 point so if Nick named 945 and Mike named 775 you each get a point and next round Nick has 945 left and Mike has 775 left. Repeat rounds until you are down to #1. You can't name any games the other Bro has mentioned or else lose a point. Highest number in the round goes first. The first round the oldest player goes first. Tip - You can type in the game on BGG to get the ranking or let a fast typer in Chat look it up for you. If you pick a higher game, you don't get a point and lose 100 rankings.
Great video...and Congratulations! Sad I missed the live showing of this but glad to catch the recap. Did I miss a heads up through Patreon? EDIT: Not so sad that I missed the live viewing because now I find myself pausing the video frequently to find out more about these games whenever the brief description intrigues me. :D It's an interesting idea, judging a game by its cover. Though I did notice on some games with very boring covers, if you've played it already, it would end up in your 'play' column because you already know it. I agree that I first judge games by it's cover too. But some games obviously have very meh covers and can be something you like (Suburbia for instance).
@TheBrothersMurph

True true
Top pass is easily Brass. Played once and never again, agree with Nick it's terrible. Was glad to see the shock at Ecos being so low, really solid unique game. My top games you passed that I like are Chinatown and Sidereal Confluence, although you do need 5+ players and 3+ hours for the latter. Economic trading games are fun with the right group.

Just started watching you guys. Been a big board gamer for a long time. I wish you would go back through this video and everyone that you said "looks to Old" and passed on you would look into what those games are about. Would be curious if you would change your mind pin some.

Oh we most definitely would change our mind on some. This was definitely a “judge books by covers” video so it’s fair to say we weren’t giving them all their fair due haha
So many great euros that you guys still haven't heard of! 😭

First one I came to that I think I'd pass on is 25 - Arkham Horror: The Card Game. I think it'd just be too much to jump into.

We say "Journey's in Middle Earth" It's the Lord of the Rings version of Mansions of Madness
I thought for sure there would be timestamps for each individual board game.

1000 Time stamps coming up!
Pax Porfiriana is excellent. It is a completely different kind of game.
"I can't play Secret Hitler bc why would I ever want to try and defend him?". Um relax... it's a game lol
