Play Moonballs With Confidence - ONE MINUTE CLINIC
We have all come across them in our matches at some point. The moonball can be one of the most frustrating and difficult styles to play against. In this OMC I help to handle moonballs with ease and confidence. HAVE FUN😁

This is defo an advanced solution. You make it look it easy! Unless you have muscle memory in tennis, moon balls are a nightmare
Swing volley would be another option and would cause the opponent the most grieve.

It is definitely an option, just have to be able recognize the chance quickly
Great efforts Will! Can you make a video on how to hit running forehands? I tend to do squash shots or chip the ball when I'm forced to run.

Great!!! Thanks!!! Can you do a video of how to return underarm serves? There’s no video out there on how to deal and/or return those underarm serves. Thanks!
I know it's not easy to play a sort of half volley at the baseline... If you are advanced enough, and the ball is landing just after the service line, try to hit the ball as it rises to wherever inside the court and get to the net... You'll rob your opponent of time and make more points at the net.. IMHO!
Top man 👍

Big thank you 🙏🙏
Love your videos! Can you make a video on a strategy for out of shape players to win point earlier and not be dead by end of 1st set?

Ooooo that's a challenge, but I think I can handle it😁
thanks for this great lesson. I noticed you didn't mention deep Back Spin (slice) shot as a counter shot for Top Spin Moonball, but rather flat - push back shot. Is there a tactical reason for not responding with "natural" counter shot to top spin incoming (moon)ball ?
You make those baseline overheads look really easy

Hi Will I am interested in your take on putting away short balls mid court, especially with little pace on them. Thanks finding your videos very insightful and helpful.

Hey Will! How about handling moon balls on the back hand?
Sweet video will! I've been watching a lot of your videos recently and was wondering what racquet setup you have. Just curious.

Thank you 😁 I hope the videos are helpful 👍 As far as my racquet set up: Yonex vcore 95 Head Hawk Power strung 50lbs Babolat leather grip Wilson sensation overripe Tourna Power strip weight 9&3
Can you talk a bit about why you decided to switch to a one hander? I've had a one hander all my life and now I'm really struggling with high balls and kick serves. Timing is also a lot more difficult now that I'm in the higher levels with more pace.
taking a moonball on BH is bad%. move. over. plenty of time. hit the FH. your best advice: don't try to do too much
When ur standing at the baseline and you get nice flat or topspin return that lands on the baseline. How do u return these. I see pros bending very low and taking it early... thanks...LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!
Thanks you so much

Great video. I have developed the skill to force weak balls from my opponent. However, I struggle to capitalize and take good advantage of the opportunity. Are there any drills that you would recommend to get more adept at attacking weak balls?

I'm gonna add drill components to the shorts section, stay tuned 👍
Your videos are awesome. I think you should trademark your logo. You look like a superhero with that symbol on your chest. It belongs on merchandise. Shoes, socks, shorts, hats, sunglasses...etc.
There are many videos on how to deal with moonballers, but I'd like to see a video on how to BE an effective moonballer. In certain situations I would like to moonball my opponent because they are impatient or have better fitness than me, but I can't seem to get it to work. Moonballing is always kinda seen with contempt, but I'd like to have tips on how to use it effectively, when and how.

As a recreational player playing with moonballers is no fun - it kind of takes the joy out of the game and beats the purpose of playing tennis. But, in a competitive setting, it is certainly a legitimate strategy. I find that the consistent moonballers have pretty much played that style all their life and have gotten good at it and can usually do little else. I don't think anyone sets out to be a moonballer - they just end up being one in their pursuit of wins against better players.
I love your videos, thank you! My question for a future 1m clinic has to do with kill shots. When you hit a good shot to induce a short, high, weak shot from your opponent so you come in to the service line area to put it away. When it is around shoulder/head high and you can't hit an overhead, I struggle with my swing path to get enough topspin to really be aggressive with it and hit 75% into the net. Why? Please help.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. my question: So, let's say you've made what you think is a solid shot and you're heading for the net. But then, either your shot isn't as great as you thought, or your opponent is ready to respond. What's the game plan then? How do you turn things around when your approach shot isn't quite up to par? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I don't think you head into the net in that case. You can sometimes feel if you've hit a good shot so you can decide right away, but on those shots that you don't know if you've hit a good shot, it's going to be too late to go in unless it's a higher ball that allows you time to get into the net AND troubles your opponent (like a sneak in). There are times when I decide I'm going to chip and charge but as soon as I feel the contact wasn't good enough or I didn't feel the power at contact was good enough, I don't go in.

Happens to me sometimes. . 😅 stay around the service line, if it's a low ball you can volley with angle hopefully so opponent can't pass you easily the next shot, then followed by a 2nd volley winner if successful closer to the net. If it's a deep lob just back up a few steps and hit a defensive overhead with some spin, like shown here don't overdo it with a full power flat overhead around the baseline, it'll end up in the net or goes long, is what I do 😎

I actually would look at the other option. If you've gone as far as the "blue line" for example. If you've hit a solid shot but not the greatest go forward. The reason being your shot quality will drop drastically from the backwards momentum as well as the options your opponent has. If continued forward it would put moderate pressure for them to at least come up with the pass. Likewise the shots to cover are less varied
Great coaching. One question though, when I am able to hit top spin moon ball early but my return typically lands mid court… then it gives opponent opportunity to move in to attack. How to handle that?
@ironwilltennis

Try to keep a firm grip and hit flatter. Most people try to spin the ball back into the court, but that tends to land the ball shorter. That may be what's happening with yours as well. It's pretty common.
Will., thanks for your lessons coach, I appreciate it. By the way, is there a way for me to get some t shirts like the one that you wore in this video. Cool shirt, looks like a shirt from the god of the sea, lol.

I respectfully disagree with you. Imitation is the most sincere form of admiration and flattery. Your logo is unique and creative. People like it. You should be rewarded. You can expand the concept. Iron Will Fitness...Iron Will anything, headed up by Will. The name says it all. Iron Will, that's you. It's fantastic.
What happens to moonballs that bounce so high that they clear the back fence? I assume that's a point for the moonballer, right? I see no difference between that and an overhead smash that sends the ball out of play over the fence.
Can you make a video showing how to handle high an deep balls on the backhand for two hands backhand? Thanks in advance!
@ironwilltennis

Its the same concept, take the ball on the rise. And if theres time then take it as a fh instead
What are your views on using the swing volley to discourage moon balling
@ironwilltennis

If you're confident enough to time it correctly, it's a great deterrent for them Relying on it
One minute is sixty seconds
This is really nice but would really appreciate it, if there is a little segment on how to punish these moonballs. Asking for a friend.

Lol 😆 everything I did in the video can be done aggressively if you choose but I guess I could've highlighted that option🤓

Even the pros wouldn't punish moon balls that land close to the base line unless they can hit an overhead. A high ball that you can "punish" is usually one that you force the opponent to hit a defensive shot that lands short. Even then, for rec players who don't practice everyday, finishing a short high ball isn't easy either.
good moonballs arent overheadable though. These are high bslls which isnt the same as a moonball.
First!

Hi Will my problem is that i try to send back the ball without forcing too much on moonball but the game became long and boring. Is there a way to punish does ball and to be more aggressive? I sometimes find myself moonball back just to be safe. Which kind of ball is better to send back? Many Thanks!

I agree, this video is great as it's showcasing the moonball hit and potential ways of returning it. However, in a tournament my son (9 years) had a moonball rally exceeding a hundred hits with a moonballer opponent, and lost eventually because of this tactic. Do you have a solution that we could apply in such situations to actually turn a moonball rally into a winner / point?
I like a lot of people play doubles, and in doubles my partner is gonna moonball you (preferably into the backhand corner) and I am going to stand at the net. You float a return over the net like most of your examples and I am having it. I guess that's why the questioner was asking about smashes as that's how pro's deal with it?
@ironwilltennis

In the doubles perspective you can actually apply a little more pressure on the overhead if the right amount of time is given
