These songs are so great for improvisation. Once you have the chords down, you can pick out the melodies and do a lead while Phil sings. Or sing harmonies over and above or down below his lyrics. I keep coming back to this lesson. It is so cool!

Thanks, phil. I am an experienced 5-string banjo player and have recently picked up a uke. This video helped me figure out where I need to focus my practice. Of course the chord positions are mostly new to me. Happily these songs are ones where I know the chord chart - but making the movements between chords needs a lot of work.

When I was a student in San Francisco many decades ago, I used to go to a big old Victorian house in the Haight Ashbury district where there were monthly meetings of folk musicians. It was essentially the San Francisco Folk Music Club (whether or not it was formally organized as such). I wasn't good enough on my guitar to join in with them, but I loved to watch and listen. Throughout the house, small clusters of musicians would jam on traditional folk songs, without any sheet music in front of them. I was impressed by how well they knew the chords, rhythms, and changes. This video explains the essential ingredients. It's something I'll work on with my ukuleles. Thanks!

Just a few little variations I sometimes use: I use an alternative fingering for the G chord when it is followed by D7 or Em. In that case, I make G as a short barre chord with index finger barring across strings 123 and middle finger on string 2 at fret 3. Then to change to D7, I extend the barre across all 4 strings and move finger 2 to string 1. To go from G to Em, I just add finger 3 at string 3 fret 4. To go from G to C, I lift the barre and move the middle finger to string 1. These fingerings reduce the finger movement compared with using the standard chord fingering, making a slightly easier "chord choreography". When it suits the melody, I use the Hawaiian D7 (2020) and add the high C note (fret 3 string 1) within a measure where it follows the melody or harmonizes with it.

In some KZread article, Mr. Doleman described backbeat -- something like "that's where the crowd is clapping, at least you hope so" and "you don't have to play the entire strum on 1 and 3, just a couple of strings" -- does anyone know which video this is? I find that video funny and a perfect explanation -- but now I cannot find it. Trying to help some people out with that skill. Thank you.
