I always find these to be so interesting in all the different shapes they come in. That first one was so nice and different and such a bright beautiful color!

We agree! It definitely helps to have some foliage plants in your collection to enjoy while you’re waiting for your ‘chids to bloom 😂

I saw "volunteer" on some platycerium at a nursery and just thought it meant they were gifts for volunteers or something so I didn't even think about trying to buy them. Good video and happy growing!

Thanks for watching and commenting! There could be many terms for a plant that germinates and grows without human intervention but I've noticed the term “volunteer” is used at the nursery we work at and by other growers. Natural recruits is another term you may hear, but “sporeling” is the term fern folk use, but that could be a natural sporeling or an intentionally sewn sporeling.

I have the usual steghorn fern (in soil) and its already quite big. Had a little elephantotis too. It came in moss, grew happy for a while but died last summer as I couldn't figure out watering. My wish plant is a Platy. madagascariense but it will stay a wish. I just don't have enough space. I have mainly orchids. Last year an orchid vendor missed a tag of his wholesaler in one of the pots. Here in Europe most of our orchids are coming from the Far East. This wholesaler was from Taiwan. Of course I checked his website 👀😮... an unimaginable variety of orchids, and Platyceriums too.

Platycerium angolense(elephantotis) can be tricky getting established. The watering needs to be pretty consistent and heavy. Madagascariense is not one I've tried yet, but it's supposedly a bit finicky as well. A fun one to try might be wallichii since they go dormant for the winter and don't want much care during that time. I've heard madagascariense also goes dormant? But I'm not sure of this as it was something I read somewhere.

I loved the video thanks! Do you have a platycerium superbum? I got one indoors and it‘s doing fine without me knowing much but i‘d like to know more to give it the best care i can

Thank you so much for watching! How cool! We don’t have a superbum yet, but it’s on our wish list! However we do know that the care is very similar to that of grande or holttumii. High humidity and water when dry.

Hello Tristan, I’ve been trying to find sources for some of the less common Platycerium species and hybrids. Can you recommend nurseries that sell and ship them? I live in Nashville, TN. Thank you.

Thank you so much for watching! Unfortunately, Platycerium do not typically ship well so a lot of nurseries require in-person purchasing only. The ones we have acquired have all been purchased at local nurseries here in Florida. If we do end up finding a reputable source that ships this variety, we will reach out to you with details. Good luck on your search!

    Do you grow any spores?

No I'm not growing any from spores but will sometimes shake the spores around on my trees to see if any will grow. We get volunteer sporelings around here from time to time.
