That had to be horrible for all of those actors to perform the scene, but they’re professionals and made it so believable. Tough to watch though. That was Oliver Stone’s point though. He didn’t want to glorify what he experienced in Vietnam.

This is arguably Charlie Sheen's greatest acting moments ever. That scene where he vents his anger and grief on this poor villager, only to just stop short of killing him. That moment where he starts weeping in shame at his behaviour, it's such a powerful moment.

The violence in this scene is some of the most brutal ever depicted in film. Stone really delivers it with the off-screen editing. Terrifying. As a kid I never really fully realized how the young Vietnamese handicapped boy wasn't taunting him - he likely would have had no idea what was even going on. So sad knowing this kind-of thing probably happened. A lot of this movie's scenes and characters were real life inspirations. War is hell.

Dude was superstitious though. The dude believed he had to kill someone a day. If he didn't, he thought he was going to die. Got so bad for him, when they would set up for an ambush at night, like in the begging of the movie. He would go off by himself amd come back later with a dead VC, throw him in his fox hole, and than sleep with the corpse. Mess up crap man.

It reminds me that no matter how bad life gets, it can always get worse. Doesn't have any real authority, Barnes ran the show. Rank means nothing if your higher NCOs won't back you. It's where the chain of command can get complicated as fuck if the officers decide to fuck off. Maybe Barnes says "nah Bunny is cool" and then you've got an enemy for life cause you tried to fuck him. The biggest failure in the movie is Lt Wolfe not standing up to Barnes and in general not managing the platoon. If any of the enlisted had faith in him to do anything they'd just report Barnes and any violations immediately.

The starving villagers taking food bribes from the NVA etc. I would take my GI Joe action figures and reenact the last battle of this movie in my yard lol. I miss those days.

I really like the Kevin Dillon character in Platoon, obviously I don't care for Bunny on a human level, but as a character I think it captures a certain type of person who likely existed and even commonly exists in war situations... I'm guessing Oliver Stone based this someone or someone's he was platooned with. There gets to be a callousness and even a competition as to how tough and callous one can be. There was a similar scene in Full Metal Jacket, which was cut out involving Animal mother. After private Joker kills the girl (as a mercy) and everyone is celebrating it, Animal Mother comes over and one ups him by hacking her head off and hoisting it, but they ended up cutting it. Animal mother was more of a bully type (Bunny may eventually be as well if he were to move up in rank), however both are trying to show off how tough and callous they are to those around them. Bunny's either a sadistic bastard, or someone who's pretending to be as a defense mechanism. You'd almost have to be sadistic, but the difference is someone blocking out their feelings vs. not having any and/or getting enjoyment out of it.
