This most iconic scene came about by accident. Willem Dafoe was rigged with "squibs", designed to create the image of bullets piercing his body, but they were installed incorrectly and didn't go off. In the moment, Willem just went with it and stayed in character. The scene was so expensive to film, they went with what they had. I think it works better, without the gore.

I'm a filmmaker, low budget, indie, do it when I can, I agree, some great moments just happen like that even for me on a low budget scale it has happened like that for me. The same applies to all kinds of productions as far as I'm concerned. A short film I did, Under Siege, was partly filmed during a big snowstorm. That snowstorm was not planned for. I saw it was going to snow, but that didn't mean I was expecting it to be a massive snowstorm. We pushed through anyway.

I knew it lmao i was like why the hell is he moving like hes being shot but nothings showing the bullets hit him. I get that not all shots would be noticeable but the way he was acting we shouldve seen some of the stuff that you mentioned that didnt work. Kinda cool they kept the scene though because you can almost convince yourself that he wasnt even shot while he was falling and throwing his arms up. Sure he had been shot on the way to that point by his own guy and a few from the enemy but it makes you think. It doesnt even matter at that point, the movies bigger than a few things that didnt go off right and willem did a great job as dramatic as it was

@ProwersJournal

It was written by Barber around 1930 or so, to my recollection. I first heard it in 1963 when I was attending a music class. I believe David Lynch also used this piece in "Elephant Man", but am saying that without checking any sources. I have to wonder about and would like to know Barber's thought train, his emotional state, when he began to compose Adagio. There are times when we can achieve so much when our spirituality transcends our mortality. It's a gift when we realize that our lives can be improved simply by listening to, or viewing a craft of art. This selection opens the door for us all...if we would only listen.

What most people don't realize is that Elias is not only running for his life but hoping for a quick death. Being the experienced soldier he was, he knew what horrors would await him if captured. When he raises his arms up, he's begging god to take him now and at the same time he's pleading for a mercy kill from his fellow soldiers to spare him the horrible fate of a POW. This film is so great that still divides audiences. I suppose we'll never know who was right between Barnes or Elias but in the end Taylor's character was right, "We didn't fight the enemy, we fought ourselves... and the enemy was in us..."

I remember watching this movie as a kid. This scene stuck with me for so long. I had actually once seen this scene before I saw the entire movie so I didn't know the context of it all. But watching the entire film, it was just one of those movie moments you always remember. On top of that it shows just how effective music can be when used properly. So many movies, especially now, try to cheat their way to these kinds of moments. They think if they just hit you with the "feels" that it'll be enough. This scene works so well because of everything before it. The relationship between Taylor, Elias and Barnes was so well done. You have to earn it and Platoon did that very well.

I saw this film when it first came out in a huge Times Square movie house. Many many years later, living in Connecticut and after spending a good 15 years putting together a real good home theater system, this was the first film I screened. Truly one of the best films ever, and this scene, the death of Elias... not too mention the incredible piece of music, this is something that remains with me. Whenever I have a real bad day, I think of Elias... and many of the others on both sides who suffered so greatly. War is indeed Hell.

Elias’ death was very symbolic- betrayed by Barnes and left to die in the fray of what he even admitted was a futile war. Same as the ones who survived- betrayed by their government and left disadvantaged with the horror and guilt of it all.
Poor Elias was shot 8 times before he died, in this video 5 times, if you look closely, every time before he falls on the ground, and by Barnes 3 times in the forest. What a powerful character

Most of the education I received from my father was through great films. Every weekend we went to the movie store to rent some film. We've been doing this for years. My whole childhood. I became a movie lover forever. When we decided to rent "Platoon ", the girl from the video store said: "This is the most rented movie here in the store." I don't forget that. A lesson that movie producers often forget often: the art world is cruel and unpredictable, but we should never underestimate the taste of the general public. I feel a pain in my chest when I watch a few trailers: they tell the whole story of the movie! Business is business, but what if it is also a sign that the general public does not want to be surprised when watching a movie? Even when the movie is a really silly comedy? In the long run it hinders the creation of creative and rebellious films. A big hug, Movie Nerd, and thanks for the comment.

@Chin Brumback Barnes is what I love the most about this movie. He's not truly evil. He made bad choices in the sense that they seemed barbaric by our standards like when he killed the old lady but yet he would still cry in isolation over the death of his men that he couldn't save, he still had to drink his sorrows away even if he didn't acknowledge that that's what he was doing. Even his line about the politicians in Washington fighting the war with one hand tied around their balls speaks volumes about his mindset, as though they've been shipped out into this jungle and abandoned by their gutless government. He's a completely broken man who truly believes that he is doing what needs to be done to win this war and he will not compromise belief. Love his character
