Thanks for the lecture! I’m looking forward to the rest of them and reading your new book on Plato’s Republic. Reason vs power is a key theme of Book I and clearly takes place in the depths of the cave. It’s represents the (frightening) world we live in before we are properly grounded in the form of the Good. By the way, I highly recommend D.C. Schindler’s book “Plato’s critique of impure reason: On goodness and truth in the Republic.”

Loved the breakdown and presentation of relationships early on in the text. It really sets the stage for a proper understanding of the dialogical framework.

Thanks! I hope you will keep working through the dialogue--and I hope my own reading lives up to the expectations I set up :)

Excellent John. Thank you. Is there a chance to load these great lectures on Podcast? It would be great to listen to these lectures while taking a walk.

Polymarcus literally and figuratively apprehends Socrates, the embodiment of Philosophy, in the looking down and looking through of dialog, and with force, foreshadowing the trial on Philosophy in the Apology. Polymarcus revises his father Cephalaus's view and his own in a real change of heart in his dealings with others: friend and foe alike. Cephalaus, the conventonal embodiment of tradition, is dismissed, and the conversation continues.

Thanks for helping me take notice of the dialog. I like how, as you say, these conversations invite us to take a stand, while in the presence of others, though we know or don't know where they stand. It is typical to act like Celhalus, be dismissive, even after saying he likes talking to Socrates.

Anyone else wonder if Plato is a play to Pluto? Kataben katidon, to the underworld / hidden world of Pluto (Hades)?

Prof. Russian, how do you think of Jowette’s translation? Is it elegant and accurate?

Jowett's translation is quite old. It is elegant in the sense of stylish (for the time period in which it was written), but for my purposes it is not sufficiently accurate, because his translation is focused more on giving you his own sense of what's important in the text rather than letting you see the language Plato actually used.

Thank you for your explanation. I got a PhD in philosophy in 2015 from Fudan University, China, specializing in Husserl’s phenomenology ( also interested in Max Scheler). I immigrated to Canada in late 2019. I have been thinking about doing another PhD in philosophy since my passion for philosophy never dies down and I had no systematic training in philosophy prior to my PhD studies in philosophy. Will McMaster and University of Toronto be the right place to study phenomenology?

@@yuhuicao2679 For phenomenology, the schools in Canada I would think of are Memorial University, the University of Guelph, the University of Alberta, and maybe McGill University.

Thanks. I live in the Niagara region, so Guelph will be the best choice.
