I am a med nib type guy, but sense I do pen reviews I do many other nibs size and fine my self getting to like a fine nib. I don't care for scratchy or dry nib but at the same time a dry nib in a fine nib I have found not a bad nib to use. Not all nibs are equal like Italians vs Japanese completely different style of nibs and I like them both. Larry's Fountain Pens.

platinum medium nib is best. I like to see characteristics of ink and smooth writing experience. plus, I write fast. the nib shouldn't be scratchy at all.

I just got a 3776 in a broad, and boy do I love it!! It is definitely one of my favorite nibs. It's wet and has the perfect amount of feedback. Great video! 👍👍👍

Lately I’ve been going for broad nibs and I just got my first stub nib! My interest in the larger nib is due to the shimmer inks! From the beginning, extra fine was always the pick!

While I am not a fan of this line of pens and definitely not a Lamy fan, I found this video very informative. When I decided to jump down the “rabbit hole” of the pen world I purchased a Parker Duofold in crushed ice pattern. The choice of nib was difficult as it was my first so I picked a medium. 20 plus years later and a number of Pelikan and Sailor pens I now cherish all my pens but I have decided I love a quality Japanese medium and a fine Western. For a beginner I would recommend Pilot E95S in a fine nib. One of the smoothest and reasonably priced.

You helped me a great deal in making my final selection of my first somewhat expensive Fountain Pen and the type of NIB that will work the best for me, I was leaning towards the SF NIB, But after I viewed your demonstration I can see that Platinums SF NIB would have been way to fine for me, and the Med NIB is just what I was looking for because of the amount of ink it put down as will as its smoothness when writing.

I love all the 3776 nibs. My favourite is the UEF and SF though.

Just purchased the platinum 3776 Bourgogne fine nib. I have been using a pilot Metropolitan fine nib for about an year, and this is the next level. Would prefer a slightly larger nib which 3776 has in comparison to the metropolitan and love the fine nib with the feedback. So really looking forward to it. My birthday present

I have the extra fine nib. I love the pen but the feedback did take me some getting used to. It can seem "scratchy" at times. Just an all around great pen.

Bought a 3776 W/ Broad Nib and Diamine Oxblood to use with... if i like it, i'm going to buy the Koi version, i think that is amazing look for a fountain pen!

Coarse as it would be first time I order such a thing. Sounds great for daily writing. Music would be my first choice, but similar if not exactly the same nib on my CH74 I already have with a music nib. an di have a 912 with a SM, so my trio would be perfect,

I love this and needed this but I still need to get hands on with these to know what is best for me. I think I have a heavy hand sadly when I write. I try to back off but put a lot of pressure down on the page so my nibs go up a size. I want to try the UEF and the fine as well as the soft fine to figure out what I like or dont about these nibs with my hand pressure. Ill have to wait for a local pen show or something I guess. But this still gave me a ton of good info to work with.

Nice video, concise and informative. I'm curious, though: both sample sets seemed to show the Ultra Extra Fine writing darker (and therefore apparently thicker) lines than the Extra Fine. Was this optical illusion, or were they possibly using different inks? I have a Medium and I love it for general writing.

It was a tester set and some of the pens had Platinum blue-black ink and others had blue, and black.

My Platinum nibs are all BROAD. Thanks for this explanation.

I've heard the soft fine has more feedback than the fine, is this the case?

I am a fan of this line, considering it one of the most dependable workhorse type pens out there. I have the Burgoyne (M), the Chartres (B) and just ordered the Black & Gold with the Music nib. The cap sealing system is brilliant and functions perfectly. I prefer a light feedback and these deliver. I have a half dozen other Japanese pens of the same mid level cost plus the same number of Western pens…including the Sailor Music Nib. None perform any better than these and none are as dependable.

Hi, what ink was used for the ultra extra fine? It seems to be a wet noodle in your video, mine had a hard start, maybe because of my ink.

Im struggling between Medium and Soft Fine. I had another Japanese pens, particularly Pilot 742 and Sailor Pro Gear slim, and their fine is "too fine" for my taste - hair-thin and toothy (compared to German F nibs). so im more inclined into M.

This is exactly the information that I needed..... however.... when you were talking about the F nib you showed the SF nib on camera. When you were talking about the SF nib, you were showing the F nib on camera. And those were the 2 nibs that I had hoped to see compared. BUT..... now I have no idea which pen you were actually writing with on the F and SF writing examples because on camera you showed the wrong nibs........

I'm just getting into the hobby, and so only have a few pens right now. (Parker Sonnet, Italix Parson's Essential and a few others) I generally go for Medium but am dubious about going to a broad in a Platinum. Do you think the Platinum Medium is so much finer than a Parker Medium? Would I regret going with a Broad, if I chose to?

The Platinum medium would be equivalent to a Parker Fine point. It would be significantly finer. I think a Platinum broad would be more appropriate for your requirements.

Would you recommend that Fine or Soft Fine for a lefty underwriter making lots of quick journal style notes? Thanks

The only advantage with a soft fine is the increased pliability of the nib, which can yield a slight degree of line variation. If you don't utilize the line variation, then a fine would be sufficient. If you'd like to add some flourish on your letters, then the soft fine would be better suited.

Broad nib with Diamine Autumn Oak = Tense!

My medium is thinner than my lamy 2000 extra fine. A bit too thin for me. It also has quite a bit of feedback which I'm okay with. However, it's certainly a bit dry and scratchy which I am not okay with at all! I think broad is your best bet if you want a smooth writing experience. They do seem to run much wider than mediums. Probably like a lamy M.

They mostly looked identical to me - except coarse and music - the second one had less ink than the first.

My wife bought a Platinum 3776 century burgogne in Fine nib as a birthday present. I used it for two weeks but couldn't bear with the scratchiness/feedback whatever you call it. On good smooth paper like rhodia dot pad it was felt like feedback, however on coarser paper it definitely felt like scratchiness to me. I knew that Platinums were known for their toothiness but this was too much imo. So i got out my tuning kit and smoothed the nib. It became like a FM but it is now buttery smooth and might become my favourite fountain pen. I also increased the ink flow, now it is a juicy, fun to write beautiful pen. If you are like me and prefer wetter and smoother pens, then I would not recommend this pen. But if you love the look of the pen and will buy it no matter what, then go for nib sizes Medium and above. I wish mine was medium in the first place.

Thank you for this feedback. That was very helpful. I actually wanted to buy this pen but was a bit confused about the nib size. I already have a pilot custom 74 with broad nib but it turned out to be too broad for me . So I don't want to commit the same mistake again. Then I heard that Platinum makes its pens one grade finer than even other Japanese pens so I think I would go with a medium nib . Chartres blue is a delight to look at

I bought a 3776 with a F nib as my first Japanese fountain pen and after owning it for a few months, I wished I had purchased the M one. Platinum F is really like LAMY EF. It's great size for writing on desktop calendar, though.

Before publishing, couldn’t you see that the camera focused on the fingers while the writing samples remained mostly blurred!? Performing a last pass at the end, without the pen, probably would have patched that.

Platinum 3776 B nib is finer than Lamy Safari EF nib.

Is it so. I have a Lamy safari Fine nib which is buttery smooth. However I would like to have a platinum too. I have heard from other channels that Platinum M is good for signature purposes since it is less scratchy than Fine nib. Since I intend to use expensive document ink like color verse I don't want a generous flow at the same time it should be decent enough to be seen. Platinum has the slip n seal mechanism which prevents the ink from getting dry. So I think a medium nib would be a better choice

I see the ink does not flow onto the paper very well. Is the ink and paper a bit of a miss-match?

Nah, its not about ink or paper. I have Lamy Safari EF, Al-Star EF, and Platinum EF. I have to say that, platinum EF is way thinner than Lamy. I use the same ink and paper with those 3. If you are like me and like to write thinner, don't even hesitate to get one platinum EF. I'm even considering to buy one with UEF.

Lamy can be inconsistent. If you look at forums you will see people complain about this. People buying 3 of the same sized pens and they write at different widths.

You got wrong the fine/soft-fine!!!

Thank you so much for this review, it's really useful. However, please for the love of our ears stop using your camera audio preamp for video work. By the sound of it your shooting on a Canon? It is the worst audio I have heard for coloration and auto compression control. I don't know if I can make it through your otherwise well made demonstration. You owe it to yourself to redo this video.
