    Great video Andrew! Really informative. I was also shocked that you flipped that ultra extra fine upside down, haha! How fine can you go??? I really want to see that nib flex though, haha. I think that would be so fun. Gorgeous color, I like it’s simplicity in design. I really enjoyed this format, the engaging dialogue and the very relaxing video of you drawing.

    I had three models of the 3776, but I just gave the last one away. Same with the Pilot Custom 74. The 3776 is a good pen in most ways, and never gave me a problem, but I don't like keeping pens that I'm not going to use, and I decided to stop using the 3776 and the Custom 74. For me, it wasn't a matter of quality, but of choice. I bought those pens because I thought it would be a good idea to have cheaper pens to use as take anywhere daily writers without worrying too much about have them stolen, broken, or lost. For younger people, this probably is a good idea. But I'm not young, and I have some more expensive pens that I love, and decided they should be used as much as possible. So I got rid of the 3776 pens, and the Custom 74 pens, and started carrying my Visconti Home Sapiens Bronze Age, and my Scribo feel. I also carry a vintage pen and a TWSBI ECO, just in case I meet someone who wants to know what it's like to write with a fountain pen. The Bronze Age and the Feel aren't my most expensive pens, but I love writing with them. The Feel is aptly named, I think. I guess it's the unique shape, but it feels wonderful in my hand. Anyway, I simply decided it made no sense to have expensive pens and not use them as much as possible, and while the Bronze Age and the Feel are hardly cheap, they also aren't very expensive, and it wouldn't break the bank if something happened to one of them. So I got rid opf my 3776 pens, and my Custom 74 pens, but in no way does this mean both aren't quality pens. They are quality, and any user should be happy to have them, if they put them to good use. My ONLY complaint about the 3776 is its weight. I prefer a heavier pen. I spent twenty years earning a living with a fountain pen, and even though I'm officially "retired", I still write a minimum of five hours per day, not counting my personal journaling. I learned early on that a light pen is not the best choice for long writing sessions, meaning several hours each day, and that a soft gold nib is a must, assuming you learn how to use it properly. When some old timers told me this, and taught me how to properly use a pen with a soft gold nib, my hand fatigue and cramping vanished. So the 3776 never worked for long writing sessions, but for ordinary use, it's hard to beat. The Platinum nibs are also great. I've heard many complain about feedback from Platinum nibs, but for anyone who wants a pen that lasts a very long time, that feedback is crucial. Even the best paper isn't as smooth as it feels, and can wear the tipping down on the best of pens, if you write enough. I've known a couple of writers who say they can wear the tipping on high-cost gold nib pens down to the point where they can't be used in a little over three years. It takes me a little over four years to wear down a high-quality soft gold nib that is as smooth as butter on glass. It takes twice that long to wear down the tipping on a high-quality nib that has the right kind of intentional feedback. In fact, the nib gets smoother and smoother over time The point being that the 3776 punches above its weight, and anyone who can't afford something like a Broze Age, a Feel, or on up the ladder, but who wants a high-quality, low-cost pen should definite consider a 3776. The different model are price for most budgets, and all of them are just plain good pens..

    that's quite a reply! Ultimately a fountain pens purpose is to write, and certainly when you get to a certain level you are paying more for branding or the design of the pen. The 3776 is certainly a worthy pen due to its performance. But, ultimately you are paying for the privilege of a gold nib. I'd argue the preppy writes just as well, but at least gold is less corrosive than steel, so when pairing with pigment or iron gall ink this does have an advantage. Albeit a more expensive advantage! In regards to your comment on feedback, as an artist I appreciate the feel the nib gives and I have never found that this hinders my ability to write. The great thing about platinum is that it does give you an idea of the nibs performance should you choose to upgrade to a Nakaya!

    I have this pen in a fine….and can’t imagine it being much finer. I also have it in a medium and a broad. The nibs are so much finer than other Japanese brand pens. They are up there with my favorite pens.

    I meant to say how much I like your art. It's beautiful. I do a lot of pen and ink sketches and drawings, but I most often use dip pens of one kind or another. Sometimes even feather quills, which, if cut right, have a fantastic degree of flex. But such pens can be a pain in the field, so I do most of use fountain pens when outside. My choice is the Pilot Metropolitan for most of it. I have eight of them, half with Kakuno medium nibs, and half with the Metro fine nib.

    I’m glad to see you back adding a drawing component! I very much like my 3776s. I have the UEF nib in the Chartres blue model (by the way, the s in Chartres is not pronounced so it shouldn’t be confused with Chartreuse, as I have heard in many reviews of the pen). I also have 3 of the special edition models with 2 Fine nibs and a Broad. I got converters with mine, so I wonder if lack of them is something new? You can’t go wrong with a Platinum 3776, in my opinion.

    I have several of these 3776 pens, most with Medium nibs which, being Japanese grading, are the equivalent of western fines. But I also have soft fine version - so equivalent to a western extra fine- which I use constantly as a pen for correcting manuscripts, for example in correcting between lines of typed scripts, where the available space is small. These Platinum pens are truly excellent. One of my favourites is a Celluloid 3776 Beckou ('Tortoiseshell') which has a very beautiful exterior and a superlative medium nib. These Platinums are certainly a match for the Sailor range of pens and nibs. Thanks for a great review: your drawing is very beautiful too!

    Honestly, platinum offer really great value for money. Their celluloid range just looks magnificent, the only detracting issue being the crease. But! I’d still love to get the koi.

    Great review, the 3776 is one of the FP that I thought most about buying it and I think it has been a pleasant surprise, to write text it is very consistent and comfortable for my style and to draw it has not given me problems, but I must admit that I prefer pens with more ink capacity for everything, however it is a good purchase.

  • @PenFriends

    Great review and enjoyable to watch you draw! I have the same pen with soft fine nib. It all performs great, but one thing I notice is if I have the nib exposed for more than a minute or two, it dries out. At work when I am taking notes, this can be a nuisance because I don't like to constantly cap and uncap. With my Lamy 2000 and Montblancs, I can leave the pens uncapped for much longer without issue. Do you find the nib on your UEF dries out easily, or I wonder if it's just my pen?

  • @PenFriends

    @PenFriends

    2 жыл бұрын

    Very much so, it is an issue I’ve noticed with more extended use. But on learning this issue, I have decided to re-cap the pen more often! A bit of a shame to have to do so, but I still enjoy the pen all the same :)

    Even a Nakaya that costs thousand dollars do not come with a converter. They charge 7 dollars extra. Ha ha The only thing I don't like is the plating on 3776. Its very cheaply done and wears off very quickly. I wonder how much the plating costs? They could definitely do better.

  • @PenFriends

    I never heard issues with plating, I assume you are referring to the trim? It really does surprise me that they don't supply a converter though. Whilst you have to select the option at checkout with Nakaya, they usually come with a converter if you buy from a shop!

    @@PenFriends thanks for the reply, Andrew. Some shops do supply, some don't. I have seen the special editions come with converter, not the usual ones. I referred to the trims on the cap. I have not seen long term review of a 3776 done by anyvreviewer. I appreciate you have done some long term reviews of other pens. I do own a 3776 and the plating on the clip became problematic after a year or so. It feels cheap indeed. However, I have vintage pens of Pelikan and MB where the trims are intact after several decades. Thanks again.
