plastic welding is VERY effective (fixing heavy duty plastic gears)

Ойын-сауық

I had a heavy duty plastic nylon gear break, but I didn’t want to stop the job I was working on and wait a week while parts to arrive so in only about 20 minutes I repaired this broken plastic gear with a soldering iron by plastic welding it back together. Plastic welding is a lot different than gluing. In the video I show the techniques I’ve learned, and I show re-installing the gear and running through some parts. Long-term I’m going to have extra plastic gears around because the gear is actually designed to protect the machine, and there is a good chance that if the machine takes another hit this gear will break again. You want this gear to break instead of your machine. The point of the video is next time you break a plastic part you may want to consider plastic welding it back together. Sometimes your temporary fix might actually be permanent.

I would really like to thank you for sharing this it worked for my RC car Caster Block which snapped into half after I collided with a stem of a dense bush. I did exactly what you performed there in the video and tested it out again to check for it’s durability, It holds on Super tight. Once again thank you... this vid allowed me to save my cash and at the same time, get my car back running

You can also melt nylon rope into it to fill the break. Very strong

The epoxy is known for the hardest glue , but these kinds of heavy duty could not do it as it should do. So, I will try your way for the part for a blender . Let's see what will happen. Thanks for the information

I have a harbor freight milling machine and had the same problem with broken plastic gears. I found replacement metal gears on ebay and installed them. So, after five years the machine is working fine with the metal gears. I looked on ebay today and didn't find anybody selling the gears. I don't know where you could find them at this point. My opinion about why they put in plastic gears is that it was a cheap machine and they put in cheap gears.

Sometimes they're there for cheapness (in which case there's a bunch of them for sheer cheapness) sometimes they're intentionalany made to shear or break to protect expensive complex geartrains (in this case there will be very few strategically placed plastic gears)

Cool, any idea what you did to cause it to break?

Not being properly lubricated in the first place... then usually a jammed gear that is then forced open causing a single tooth or more to break.

Wash it fully with detergent and apply steel epoxy.

what about inhaling fumes produced by the contact of hot iron and the plastic, i prefer to clean the broken parts and join them with clear epoxy resin
