Plastic surgery & beauty ideals - A hot topic from Iran to Brazil | Us & Them | DW Documentary
Brazil and Iran, two countries with very high beauty standards. There’s an enormous number of plastic surgery procedures taking place in these two nations and the pressure to look good is ever present. Sometimes that pressure comes from relatives - who disagree about how we should look.
In the age of Instagram and Tik-Tok, unrealistic beauty ideals have become a global phenomenon. And sometimes it's hard not to be influenced by them. Brazilian mother Claudia Cristiane Pegorer Tavares describes herself as "vain". She’s already had some plastic surgery and wants to have even more. Her daughter Camila is part of the Brazilian body positivity movement "Movimento Corpo Livre" which promotes self-acceptance. But that can come at a cost: people like Camila who don't measure up to society's standards still get nasty looks and comments. Often the comments come from Camila's own family. Her godfather encourages her to get her stomach stapled to lose weight. Her mom Claudia thinks she needs silicone breast implants. No wonder there's a rift.
In Tehran, the world capital of nose jobs, singer-songwriter Reesa believes that a different nose is key to his success. He's earned quite a bit of money playing music in the streets, but his mom is skeptical of his plan to spend so much on surgery. The real conflict however is with Reesa's uncle. His view is: "Men have to be tough, with calluses on their hands." Even though more and more Iranian men are getting nose jobs, for Uncle Akbar, cosmetic surgery is only for girls and women who want to be beautiful for their husbands. He's afraid that Reesa will start off getting a new nose, then new eyebrows and maybe end up a junkie. At least the regime in Iran has no problem with nose jobs. The late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini even officially sanctioned the procedure, saying: "God ... loves beauty."

That Brazilian mother is, quite frankly, vile. If she was telling her daughter to lose weight because of health issues, it would be understandable, but to constantly fat shame her daughter just to be "beautiful" is appalling. However, if what her daughter says is true, that the mother deliberately persuaded people to have procedures that they hadn't thought about, then it tells us a lot about her. Thank goodness that the daughter has a supportive wife.

When I say I see narcissism everywhere I meant it. It's everywhere. A child's first bully is the parents. Me seeing that woman inject herself I threw up. That mother is the reason her daughter is insecure about her body. Sad sad sad. Am a mother and I always boost my daughters confidence and remind her how beautiful she is even with a messy hairday and ive done it since she was a newborn and now age 5 she tells herself how beautiful she is especially when I plait her natural hair. And for my son I do exactly same and when he is angry I encourage him to come to me and let's talk about it. Parents need to teach their children to love themselves and everyone is happy. Not true. Sometimes people are overweight because of metabolism or hormones. I'm 1.58 and 90kg, and regularly go on long walks, do workouts at home, go swimming. I'm from Europe and was basically married to a Brazilian for 7 years and went to visit the in-laws 5 times. Some of them didn't realise I could understand Portuguese. I heard their comments about my weight and I wasn't even fat! I made it very clear where to draw the line with people, which embarrassed my ex. I learnt that they weren't trying to be malicious, it's just cultural.

As a Brazilian, I do consider it a bit malicious. Kind of passive agressive. People use euphemisms sometimes. They might call you strong with a smile in the face. It's not common to give it straight in Brazil. Quite the opposite, actually. Our culture is full of innuendos, context, malice. Direct talk is considered offensive.

I love the nose of the Iranian singer. I hope he will make it to the music industry and prove to them that talent is more than the looks.
The dude’s nose is great. Suits his face. But it’s his nose and if surgery gives him confidence , that’s great 🎉 . He is a good dude trying to make his way. His mom is beautiful.
Very interesting! I am proud of the Brazilian girl who likes herself the way she is. I personally think she's gorgeous. I am disappointed the Iranian artist got a nose job but if this is what makes him happy, I fully support him. Beauty is so relative and the definition our current society gives of it is so wrong at so many levels! Life is short. Do whatever makes you happy as long as it's legal. So glad the Brazilian girl found her way to love herself, express herself through fashion and also has a lovely, supportive wife. She's really pretty, too. Societal pressure is a cruel beast, and obviously her mother buys far too much into this distorted concept of "beauty". Being thin at all costs, mutilating your body through non medically necessary surgery to achieve it, fighting a constant battle with your body to look younger or barbie-like are all terrible lessons.
Confidence is all the beauty you need.

I have a Brazilian friend and once we almost had a fight when I suggested that people should reconsider before opting for invasive surgery and think whenther the issue that they have with their body really boils down to their body or something else. I have learned from him and other Brazilians that many there view plastic surgery much more casually and positively than Europeans.

I am Brazilian, and I am shocked with the way Camilla's mom is treating her. This is not acceptable. Of course it is comprehensible that she is concerned with her daughters' weight, but she should encourage her to see a nutritionist and never body shame the girl. That was mean :(

I came to the comment section to see if I was losing my marbles. So happy to see other people saying that Iranian guy looks absolutely great. It really is all about perception I guess.
It's concerning when people's priorities are out of order, conflicting beauty with health. To say everyone must look like a supermodel to be successful and accepted is as far from correct as saying one should be happy and feel beautiful even when clearly overweight... We're seeing 2 different extremes and both are removed from reason. That dude's uncle is the type of person everyone should have around for a reality check!
If you spend some time on the beach in Rio, you start to understand and appreciate the Brazilian relationship with the human body. It may not represent the nation as a whole but from kids to seniors it is all hanging out. Slim to plus, taught and young to sagging leather. S'cool!
It's not so much how you look, it's about your health, as you get older your body can't carry the weight. We have them my family. My cousin had to have knee surgery because of her weight, but she worked on it, and now the weight is gone. I worked with a guy that was older than me. We worked for the DOD. They would not allow him to travel abroad with us because his weight caused lost of other issues. He started working out, stopped smoking, stop drinking beer. Pretty much changed his lifestyle. He has not taken a pill in over 15 years. He is in his 70's now and feels better than he did in his 50's.

The singer has a beautiful nose. It's sad he thinks this will increase his self confidence.
I've lived in Brazil for 25 years and have seen many beautiful women of all sizes. But being overweight is a health issue, not a beauty issue. Camila is still in her 20s but in 10 years time, if not before, she will be suffering from several ailments that are diet related such as metabolic syndrome and pre-type 2 diabetes. I know from experience that changes in diet, especially cutting out carbs and sugars dramatically improves this and you lose weight without resorting to invasive, non-reversible surgery. The average Brazilian meal will often comprise three or even four carbohydrates such as rice, french-fries, pasta, farofa (toasted cassava) and prepared using industrial seed oils instead of animal fat such as lard, butter or olive oil. This is all often accompanied by a 2 liter bottle of coca cola or Guarana. She, and her partner, will eventually have to change for health reasons, but could change now to avoid what is inevitably coming. Many of my friends and family have changed the way they prepare and eat their meals and have all benefited from losing weight, having more energy and being able to be more active.

The average meal comprises rice and beans, salad and a piece of meat/veggie protein with farofa. Which is pretty healthy! So I think this girl is having a very bad diet by Brazilian standards! A very unusual and unhealthy one. No one should suffer prejudice for one's body type, and fat shaming is a no-go, poor girl! but indeed, she should seek some guidance to lose weight in a healthy manner.
I started working out cause it makes me feel stronger and I like the result I see when I look at myself in the mirror. I would never consider plastic procedures but I respect and admire the ones who go through that. Nonetheless, we shouldn't judge at all, we never know what our relatives/friends are going through. I would never be able to cope with a mother like the girl from Brazil does. She is mentally strong and at the same time stands up for what she believes it's right for her. Love that! Ps amazing documentary.

Most of the times, through surgery people are fixing something else…something internal
Its a matter of Accepting yo natural look or push yo self to look good, thats beauty sometimes choos right clothes, hairstyle and true changing hairstyle often makes u matured - watchinh from Philippines 🇵🇭
Another wonderful documentary was shared by an excellent ( DW) documentary channel. Thanks for sharing. Are these surgeries having bad side effects on their health? Are theirs natural tissues embracing these foreigners normally without ejection? The beauty medical world is not telling the truth behind these surgeries to the customers . Fixing between youths desirable and older generations notable must be for embodying better options for youths and avoiding healthy losses. Not running behind mode standards of famous artists

What a sad sad world. Wouldn’t it be amazing, going to the beach, not worrying about anything but having fun, like we did when we were kids. ♥️ When we are dying, we don’t think „we didn’t look good enough“, we think „we didn’t have enough fun, we were not free enough“ 😐
I´ve never see such a disrespectful mother like that, I´ve felt completely disgusted to watch such appalling behaviour from a mother who should care and protect her daughter. Tha´s why so many people grow up traumatised and depressed.

“Is not Plastic Surgery” is Liposuction” 😂😂😂😂 Lady yes it is liposuction!!! Nothing wrong with it, but call it for what it is.
You're beautiful the way you are born! Love the young lady from Brazil!
Kamila is beautiful and more confident then her mother …
What have we come to? All these attractive people so hyper focused on their appearance! What if our youth focused on issues outside themselves?
His nose already seems to be done. It doesn’t look natural. On the other side he really sounds to have breathing issues. That's something that needs to be fixed with no doubt.
Undergoing cosmetic surgery is always risky. Including Botox treatments. Natural is beautiful. Why would anyone want to undergo cosmetic surgery and/or want their daughters to under go cosmetic surgery which does not add to persons physical health at all?
@kateaye3506

The Uncle needs to tell him that people with confidence and self-esteem already have the cure for the compulsion to go under the knife.
Do these people really think that their appearance will change so much of their lives? Or they think they have fixed everything else and appearance is the only thing left to be taken care?
What a painfull life it was when i went under surgery.. god how these people do it😢🙄... only to look good which will not last long though😢😢
So much energy put on things that doesn’t last. As a doctor, I think plastic surgery is just it, its plastic, its superficial. If it’s for cosmetic thats what it is for. Let’s not put more to it than what it is. If cosmetic was the reason one went for a procedure thats not necessarily wrong but that doesn’t make it good as well. There are medical reasons and there are cosmetic goals. Health should be the ideal outcome and so when you have weight thats not considered healthy, that does some health risks too. There’s like a spectrum between disease, cosmetic, health and the ideal. Truth is we chose where we are on this spectrum and stand by our choice and consequence.

Even if appearance were a marker for success, what makes you stand out and attractive, are your unique features- a slightly larger nose, crooked teeth, or a dimple that makes you, you. From reading the comment section, it is evident that there is a level of cultural misunderstanding over the brazilian woman’s mother preoccupation with her daughter’s weight. Yes, being beautiful is perhaps overestimated in the country as a whole, but her mother made it very clear that she prioritizes her daughter’s happiness. The thing is obesity is undeniably a major health issue - a disease. It even has a ICD of its own.
