Well this is lovely. I've had 2 squads of DTs sitting on my desk mocking me for 2 years now. This is def my way FWD! THX!!!
Looks great, glad to see you doing more Star Wars. I was kind of worried when I did mine that they would end up too dark, but the spots of red on the blaster and bright green on the mask really brought it all together.
Black, especially flat surfaces, is a lot harder than it seems. Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I'm going to try this technique on some Tyranids.
vallejo black, black grey and german grey are my staples for painting black sometimes i blend in skavenblight dinge to get brighter highlights out of them
Black had always been difficult to make realistically, expecially in such a scale, this tutorial helps a lot, I remember using the old Humbrol "Panzer Grau" for highlights on black, but this is surely better.
Thank you , Troy . 🐺
That is a super paint job.
Oh THANK YOU! I've been in the hobby for ages and have been completely lost on how to paint a good, multi-layered looking black for flat armor. This is like seeing the cheat codes!
Wow, sinisterly cool ! Great job Mr Sonic !
Excellent walk through, I still struggle with black a bit but I'm getting better. I will be trying this!
Back in black… awesome simple, simple awesome.
This is now my favorite recipe for black armor! Thank you!
making black armor look interesting is very hard, you pulled it off superbly! Definitely digging the drybrush + dots technique, gonna try this on my Vader and maybe on other things as well!
I have been putting off painting my death troopers after I painted Vader because black is just so difficult for me to get right. This has changed my mind and I am now priming! Great work!
Good work, I find it easier to start from payne's grey (mostly because I have a 500ml tub of decent artist acrylic paint to work through) which seems to have a touch more blue in it. Ends almost identical though.

For a black, I usually prime / base coat in one step with Rustoleum "slate" primer/ paint.
Outstanding work Troy! This is a really helpful tutorial. Thanks for sharing this.
Love these videos. Never gotten into playing table top games but I love painting miniatures, the outcome is always satisfying.
spectacular finish
Excellent work, it has been said you can do more with less and this painting project proves it. You didn't have to get crazy with the highlighting like on a space marine figure, the highlighting here looks much more logical. I'll have to give this a go.
This tutorial helped me get my deathtroopers painted up in time for a legion event... flvery quick method to get them to a great tabletop standard, 😊
Excellent tutorial. I'm pottering around with rebuilding my Cadian 122nd soon, and this has given me some great ideas on how to play around with the armour.
Awesome. I learned a lot about painting black :)
Looks great mate, it overall still reads as different types of black.
Might be getting into black templars, this will definitely help with the painting stage
Awesome. German grey & black grey are great colors for anything that needs to be painted a “light black” if that’s a color. LoL . Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
funny how an entirely black mini is probably my favourite mini you've ever painted! :D love how it came out, great work as always :) i'm currently building both a separatist army and a republic army, but man, this makes me wanna paint some death troopers and inferno squad! :P
Love the dots
Nice!
Mmm perfect!
I painted my death troopers glossy black and was not really pleased how they looked. I washed them and fussed with grey highlights, and matted the look. They look more sinister in a matt finish
I love this. I wish I had it two months ago when I was painting my Death Troopers! (They turned out okay, but not as good as this.)

Oh no! Well, that's just an excuse you need some more, right? 😂
very nice) I'd add a coat of gloss varnish
Going to paint vader like this
Very good results! What's that big brush that you use for drybrushing?
love the mouth farts in every video!!!
Hey Sonic, im about to start painting my Deathwatch, i have looked at all your black armor tutorials and i think this one is the easiest? for a beginner would you recommend this method or one of your other videos?
I really enjoy this channel, man. What brushes do you use?
Great video and amazing DTs - but could you list the numbers of the vallejo paints if possible? Im struggling with 2 things right now: the AP Matt Black primer is rather shiny and my German Grey is more grey, than bluish like in your video and I realized there are 2 German Greys with different numbers.
You talk about being unable to do a protective varnish, but wouldn't you be able to leave the varnishes til the last step? Paint everything, do the protective varnish, and then do your matt brush on to make it shiny?
please make a video on how to paint gordon highlanders from the napoleonic wars

Tartan is just one of those things I'm not prepared to tackle, unfortunately. I've never quite mastered the look of it myself, so I can't very well show anyone else how to do it. 😅
🙌🙌🙌🙌
I guess I’m just a bit confused about what gets the matte varnish, and what gets the ultra matte varnish.
Any citadel equivalents? Probably be easier to paint 8 squads of marines like this than following GWs Deathwatch tutorial
Like "non metallic metal," we can call approach this "non gloss shiny."

I might very well have to steal that! 😜
