This method makes it much more economically viable to transport the bottles by container ship so they can then be dumped into the middle of the ocean.

this is not the whole proces... ive worked this for 2 years..from here, the plastic bottles go to the recycling factory and there the bottles r sorted by colour and then crushed in small pieces and than all the crushed plastic goes in a pool of wather where the plastic is separated from the bottle caps and paper and from there, plastic is washed and dried and ready for recycling..

While plastics recycling was a great idea unfortunately it is the biggest con globally. It is cheaper to manufacture new plastic than to recycle old. And companies using plastic containers don't want the added cost of using recycled plastics so they support new plastic manufacturing. Plastic needs to be phased out of everyday use like water bottles, kitchenware, product wrapping, BAGS and stuff like that. Most of it just ends up in landfills anyways. And there are nations who still barge it out onto the open oceans and dump it along with all kinds of other waste. We keep poisoning our planets ground and water thanks primarily to plastics and chemicals manufacturing. And I'm not a "green" fanatic I just see what's going on around me.
