Plants I Regret Buying & Will Not Be Repurchasing 2021. Hey guys. Since the year is wrapping up, I thought that I would do a video on the plants that I regret purchasing and will not be repurchasing again. This plants do not grow well for me and probably will not be in my collection much longer.

Now here is my two cents, but Calatheas and Philodendrons I feel do better in glazed ceramic or plastic pots. It helps retain moisture, terracotta dries out (which is great for over waterers). But switch the pots. I regret buying the Birds nest Fern. I saw yours and YOU gave me hope. But I guess, not every plant is for every body 🤷‍♀️

My calatheas are all in plastic pots, and my Medallion2 also crisp and then died. I have an Obtusifolia Calathea in a plastic pot, and it has survived. Some Calatheas are harder, I guess.

I was thinking the same thing with the terracotta. I have all my calathea in glazed ceramic pots grouped together on 1 table with a humidifier in the middle and I still have to water all 24 of them twice a week otherwise I get crispy bits. They are high maintenance for my home environment but I chose this path and I’m sticking to it 😂 I love the foliage too much 💚

You got this! To me it looks like your philodendron are thirsty and have dried out a few too many times. If you love terracotta, then I would put the plant in a plastic nursery pot and then the terracotta can be the cover pot. Another suggestion if you keep them in terracotta is to let the plant sit in water and suck up as much as it needs for 15-20 min. This will help make sure all the roots get a drink. I am an underwater-er and had to change out all my plants that were in terracotta and I will never look back!

Sis part of your issue is not putting your plants in pots that’s are suitable for that particular plant. Glazed or plastic pots will definitely keep your Calatheas and Micans happy. Terracotta wicks moisture away from your plants 🪴. Before you totally throw in the towel forever try again however this time using pots that will make the plants thrive in your collection.

🤣 I so happy I am not the only one. I often feel like a failure when my plants decide they don't like me. Phil Brandi and Verrucossum are the ones I will not do again. I noticed you use a lot of terracotta. You can't put all plants in Terra Cotta. I love putting cuttings in them, but once they get bigger, I put them in plastic or self watering. From what I heard, Calatheas love water. Pay attention to your watering need and purchase pots accordingly.

I agree with Anita, some plants it's almost impossible to keep in terricotta. It just sucks the water out of your soil! I notice you keep all your plants in terricotta. You'll pretty much have to keep a water can in your hand! I wick water my micans, and mine seems to like brighter light if you want growth, it grows like crazy. Just try another kind of pot before you give up! 😃. Oh calathea like to stay damp also!

Greetings from Finland! Please try this: Soil: One part regular houseplant soil, one part orchid mix, one part leca, one part charcoal. Pots: Two pots, One plastic pot with holes on bottom, one ceramic pot without holes on the bottom. Do a doupl drainage with leca. Layer of leca on the bottom of ceramic pot, also layer of leca on the bottom of plastic pot. Then planting your plant. Now you can water your plants more. Make also sure that your himidity is high enough, like about 50% or a bit ligher even. Make sure you have enough light. Dont keep those plants in too dry soil, but make sure (With douple pot system, with douple drainage system and with soil mix) there is good enough drainage. The plastic inner pot should be couple of centimeters narrower than outer ceramic pot. When there is good air circulation around the pot and layers of leca, it prevents root rot even you can water your plants. Enough moist in the soil and high enough humidity in the air also prevents mealy bugs. It will also help with humidity, when there is a bit water on the bottom of the outer pot, but now so much it will climb up to upper pot.

Don't regret purchasing any plant. Some of the plants you have I purchased them half price due to them dying. But when I got them home they began to thrive again. I don't use clay pots at all, not even outside. I'm sure if you repot them in plastic pots and nurture them, those same plants you regret getting will perk up🙂

I think lot of ur problems will go away if u stop using Terra Cotta for every plant... That and an air potting mix will dry out soooo fast!! Especially for calathea! Brown tips and outer margins are a sign of under watering ... I really think if u switch from Terra Cotta, ur plants will look better and be alot happier! Terra Cotta isn't the end all be all alot of plant parents think it is... I have almost every plant I own in plastic pots, and I haven't lost any plants at all. And I don't have as much maintenance...I only water once every ten days in the summer and about once every two weeks in the winter! I can tell ur heart leaf philo is very very dehydrated!! Hurts my heart to see how thirsty the plants r.... The reason for tiny leaves isn't just light, if they don't have enough water in them to have the energy to produce bigger leaves, they will just put out the small ones because it's all they have the energy/water for :( I do think if u switched every plant here to plastic, u would see these plants change so much, for the better!! Lol, good luck lady!

I don’t think that plant parents feel like terracotta are the end all be all. As you can tell from the comments a lot of people use plastic and ceramic. I just like terracotta I never have to worry about overwatering and my gnat problem is very very minimal not to mention that when my dog is ripping through the house I don’t have to worry about my plants knocking over because the pots have a weight to them. It is just a personal preference like you and plastic. I definitely won’t be switching my plants to plastic because that would be expensive and wasteful. But I think two out of 22 calathea struggling isn’t too bad if I do say so myself 😊

Love your channel! You may want to switch to plastic as I was a terra cotta pot user and now have learned they dry out too much. I killed plants for years and have found I am actually good at it now since I have time to care for them since all my kids grew up and moved out. Buy a moisture meter and a humidifier - since started using these I am up to 100+ plants and all doing well. I have not had much luck with Calathea but will try again.

I bought a zebra plant last September and it was my FIRST plant purchase in years, in November it bloomed the most beautiful flower. Per the care tips I found when the flower started wilting I pruned it. A couple weeks later I saw that where I cut the flower the stem got mushy so I cut it back more, then the soil got a layer of mold so I put cinnamon on it and let the soil dry out for two weeks before water. Then the leaves started crisping up and when it did that in the past I figured it needed more humidity so quarantined it to try and tap moisture. ONE WEEK LATER it lost all of it's leaves the stem was shriveling. So I took it out of quarantine and let it do it's thing since I was out of ideas. Another week passes I see two new leaves coming in (YAY). By the end of December/beginning of January it had lost all of it's new growth and the stem shriveled again. I was so sad lol. I'm not ready to say I won't buy another one, but I won't be buying another one soon 🤣🤣🤣

Try being a bit more sensitive to plants needs. Don't just put a plant in TCot just cause you love those pots. Just like you wouldn't want to ignore it's light and water needs, don't ignore its need to be in a particular base. Use inexpensive bases that don't let water escape so easily like porcelain or glazed pottery. Now, think out of the box. Making plants happy ain't got to cost a fortune. I know that's not how I do it. I think out of the box way inexpensive. I do not have humidifiers or special grow lights. I just sit water around them and I use small LED lights. Well now I've come up with another system of keeping humidity around them instead of just sitting water around the plants. I do want to up my game on LED lights but I'm going to Ikea to see what I can find. And for bases or pots, they do not have to be exactly pots made for plants. Shop around for very inexpensive items that can be used as a pot making sure it fits what you like for your enviro. Shop Thrift shops, Dol.Tree, Home Goods, Marshalls, TJ Max, Big Supermarkets, etc. looking for items that can beautify your home an act as a planter. Be ready to use a drill with diamond bits to make drainage holes. Now, I'm just sharing my 2 cents wit cha. You the Boss Lady of your realm. Take care now. Blessings to you and your Mother. Two days after I brought it home the flowers started to dry up and the leaves stared dropping left and right. I took it back to the nursery and they were cool enough to let me exchange it. THE SAME THING happened with the second one. Turns out, it needs LOTS of humidity - 50-60% aint enough. Same thing with the Cissus. It was pretty much dead until I put it in my cabinet that has 80% humidity and it is throwing out all kinds of leaves.

I have a biiiig rufibarba, bought it back when I knew nothing and incredibly it's still alive, it's gone through many periods of crisping-looking good-crisping, but I had tried what others have mentioned here where I pruned most of the leaves and all the new ones grew back glossy and healthy! It's like the plant realises the new leaves need to be acclimated in order to stay alive.

So sad since they were two feet long 😭 I recommend using a plastic pot and using a terracotta pot as a cover pot if you still want that look.

Hey, I (kinda) regret buying my Bird of Paradise because she takes up too much space and needs too much attention? This is my first time watching one of your videos so I apologize if I'm suggesting things you've already addressed. First, thanks for sharing! Second, I LOVE using terracotta pots, but many of the plants you showed want to be a little more moist than terracotta will allow. It seems like your plants want more humidity overall. I get being over certain plants though, and don't blame you for giving them a time line to show you that they want to live there.

The heartleaf and micans do not need a grow light and do even better just sitting g among other plants to in a east facing window. I struggle with my micans 😍 as well (it's my favorite). I've had it in plastic, ceramic and now terracotta. It's doing better right now, but I know it belongs in a ceramic pot. I will continue to purchase micans until I get it right...maybe I'll try a self watering pot next. Check to see if the roots are actually IN the soil. I have noticed that once philodendron and pothos start to trail the vines grow heavy and partially dislodge themselves from the soil. If not caught soon the roots just shrivel up. I live in the South so my environment is different, my plants are ALL kept in a large west facing window. Good luck

My struggle plants are large leaf Hoyas, idk they really don't like my space and low humidity. How much time do you let your philodendrons acclimatize to your space before repotting? I would try to keep them in their nursery pot for 2-4 weeks before repotting them to your own substrate. The plant is already stressed from moving from the greenhouse so I try not to touch it unless the plant looks like it's suffering. Also I don't tease the roots much when repotting, even if it's super rootbound, as there's a beneficial environment they've cultivated. I just plop into new pot and backfill, try not to disturb the roots. The roots will find a way to the new substrate if you water evenly.

I do live high desert and they do have the thinner leaves needing more moisture but the humidity in my house is not really low. Right ow it is 52% Often it gets to 55% . She has higher humidity where she lives than I do.

My plants get a lot of love lol my preferred pot is terracotta. I only use nursery pots for a transition period or until I repot the pot from its original pot. And I'm not about treating some plants better than others. I would feel the need to give them all the same kind of water. I've tried other water and it is too much work. I rather just let my tap water sit out.

Hi, HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Ehree plant can"t go in a terra cotta. I know you like them buuut. My heart and mican does just fine but I don"t put many plants in terra cotta especially if they are water hogs. We must understand that 3 micans or any three of the same plants, in the same enviro won't act the same. Each plant is an individ' even though it's the same exact plant. Calathea, Marantas are water hogs and humidity hogs too. So if you've tried again and again with these and each time they won't thrive then your enviro's not for them. Now, Any plant I love or set my sites on I'm willing to try whatever can make it thrive even if it means I sacrafice aesthetics. I just love ferns, Calatheas, Marantas, Pileas, Fittonias, I just got to have them. My new method sacrafices aesthetics. I use plastic wrap around top part of planter, for me plastic, and then around water and humidity loving plant. From time to time I open it up to get air. Works for me! I use wire ties to close it up. For air, just remove tie and open up plastic wrap and wala! air gets in. I am in NYC. So you know I've got four seasons. So I just watch my plants and think out of the box waith God's help to make these plants thrive. Now with plants I can get a bit persistent. What do I mean? I'm not giving up on string of pearls. I'm going on my 5th try and I only buy baby plants. I just have to win this pearls battle.

I regret buying 1. Tradescantia Tricolor - the pink has quickly turned very meh 2. Calathea Rattlesnake - I had calatheas in the past and swore I would never do that again. But then having developed a lot as a plant parent, I thought I was ready.... Oh well 3. Goeppertia Network / Mosaica - this plant of just not happy, but at the same time I can't get myself to just get rid of it. 4. Codiaeum gold sun/ gold dust - well actually this was my mistake. I thought I was buying an cast iron plant, which are super hardy, but then it turned out it was s kind of croton, which are not that easy. They are pest magnets and they don't like to dry out... Which is just not my style of plant care. So now I'm just waiting for it to die, but at the same time in thinking how beautiful it is every time I pass it

Maybe you should watch more of my videos before you write comments like these. I've discussed in multiple videos that my natural humidity in my home is in the 70 range without using any additional measures. Anything higher than that and you risk mold in the house. Secondly I'm working 60 hours a week and I stated that I have missed some of my plants. The browning is due to underwatering. Not low humidity. In any case, 6 struggling plants out of 150ish healthy plants is not bad. You can watch my houseplant tour for reference. If my videos are unsatisfactory you can feel free to watch other channels. Thank you :)
