Hi Jason, this year has gone so fast and it's hard to believe that it's time to plant our gardens for the year. The tomatoes should thrive with that dark rich Compost.

@@birchfieldfarming clocked in most of my life from age 11 on at 3:15, 3:30 or 4 am. I wake up "early" without the alarm. Now that the dairy cows are gone, i'd love to sleep in til 5 or 5:30 am. I used to show up and check on night crew at any hour. Thanks, now is late enough to forward to nephew!

What materials did you use for your Johnson Su compost? Just leaves or other mix of materials?

Just leaves…and tried to stay as close as possible to Dr. David Johnson’s instructions.

Also, I wanted to get started on producing this compost but it'll take 12 months to mature. Do you suggest buying this compost from someone else in the meantime if I wanted to get started using now?

We actually went longer with ours - heated thru the winter in barn and sitting about 18 months now. Yes, definitely a time investment as well. For me, it would depend on the context, goals, and application as to whether or not I was purchasing. Potting plants that I’m selling or giving away, probably just regular compost…garden soil that I’m amending to grow nutrient dense food for family, probably buying JS with test results until I get my systems up and running.

They’ve always done great this way! One thing we’ve noticed is the JS compost holds so much more water than the regular soil we have to be careful not to overwater
