Dollar store has great seeds

I want to see how my foxgloves & coneflower grow before trying to grow these beautiful snapdragons.

Thanks for the tips. I’m on a garden budget this season and decided to grow my annuals from seeds vs buying at the garden center. I’ve germinated petunias, snap dragons and impatiens. Thanks for showing the entire process of gemination and the beautiful result in the end. I'm going to grow snapdragon the first time this year, will try winter sowing method (start today, in zone 5) with half of the seeds and your method the other half (beginning of March) and see how it goes.

I thought that I was the only one who used a syringe to water seeds😂😂😂

I started mine in the potting soil six packs--didn't do the vermiculite step. They germinated fine, but it seemed that after the second set of leaves they looked pale(I fertilized with Miracle Gro) and really had weak stems. Put them outside but I never saw them recover well. I am not sure what may have happened.

I'm trying lisianthus for the first time this year. I heard they were difficult to germinate. I wonder if I could use vermiculite instead of potting soil to avoid the algae and the dampening off. Looks like that drains pretty well!

Hi Ali, you are correct, Lisianthus are hard to germinate and takes time. We have planted them from seeds before and we used vermiculite. They may be hard to grow but once established they are beautiful and worth it! Best of luck! 😊

We kept the light on 24hrs until we're ready to put them in the 6 pack trays. Since we kept the seedlings indoors, they didn't have enough light once they germinated, so we kept the light on. If the seedlings didn't get enough light they don't grow well and they will also stretch. We tried putting them next to a window but they still stretched so we just the left the light on to keep it consistent. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching!

I greatly enjoyed your video. I have 74 growing now. Started from seed. They don’t all fill out, many just bloom at the top & not down . I am trying to find out why.

Hello Totally Domestic, Many types of flowers like to do this. They rush to flower and then often just shut down for the season. When you start them from seed you can let them grow until they have several sets of leaves, then pinch off the very top growing point. The plant can't grow up without the tip and it will respond by making several branches. Each one of these branches will become a flowering stem. Your snapdragons will then be more showy and a bit more stalky (shorter). I know it seems like a mean thing to do to a young plant but it actually encourages more flowers. It will set the flower back a week or two, so it won't flower as quickly as if you left it alone, but you will get more flowering branches. Patience, however, is part of a successful garden. Stock, is another flower that benefits from pinching. Just make sure you have several sets of leaves as the plant will recover better and a branch can form from each set. If your flowers are already blooming, just trim them and make a bouquet for the house. Continue to water and feed and the plants should start to branch and give you some more flowers in three to four weeks. I hope that helps! Happy Gardening!

Hi Bella, great question. I found this quote from google which sums up one of the reason we start seeds using vermiculite. "Vermiculite helps to aerate soil while simultaneously retaining water and nutrients, which it then releases over time. Vermiculite is therefore useful in seed sowing and propagation." Also, vermiculite has been sterilized while soil hasn't been. This difference can help seedlings stay healthy and not develop any diseases early on. Hope that answers your question.

Can you give me details of your grow light and heating mat as I have been avoiding the lights as I go to have anyone to install it I loved yours and would like to know which company it is so I can get the right one . This is recalling amazing I never thought of starting seeds in only vermiculite thanks so much . God bless your family.

We buy our grow light and heat mat from Amazon. Any one of the brands will work fine. They have many you can choose from. We use Ipower heating mat and Fauna grow light brands. But as I’ve mentioned, there are others on Amazon that will work just as good. I don’t endorse just one brand. Thank you!

Thank you for that excellent video!! I will use your technique for my Petunia seeds. Unfortunately my first attempt was not successful. 😭 I just purchased a grow light. I will try it again! Buying plants from the store gets so costly. How often do you water the seedlings under the light?? And how long do I need to keep them under the light?? 1 month?? And after you repot them in their own cell,, do I still keep them under the lights? Sorry to ask so many questions, totally new to gardening and plants😓 Ty so much for all your info!!! Hopefully someday I can master this seeding process. 😅🌈🌟🌹🤞🤞🤞

We use the spray bottle daily to keep the soil moist not not overly soaking. We keep the Snapdragons under the light all day since they are inside the house until they are ready to get transplanted. Once you transplant them into the 6 pack you don't need to keep them under the light. We have a greenhouse where we put the plants until they are ready to be planted in the ground and they get enough light there. Hope that helps.

I have given up trying to grow from seed. They come through ok, but with watering, a grey mould spreads over the compost. Are you supposed to water them from below rather than over them?

So sorry to hear about your planting woes. I usually water them with a clean spray bottle and clean water if they are still very small. Once they germinate I make sure they get sunlight so they don't stretch. Also, the planting medium or soil I use prior to germination is packaged and has been sterilized. Don't give up!
