Planting Pumpkins For The Perfect Halloween Jack-o'-lantern

If you want your pumpkins to be ready for harvest a couple weeks before Halloween, you've got to get them in the ground by absolutely no later than the first of July, but even earlier would be better. Here's how we did it.

I am a combat vet and I appreciate this patriotic gardening video. I live in the Smokey Mountains region of East Tennessee, so this video was particularly helpful to me. I have an old, creepy house with a little land and an adopted black cat, pumpkin mounds will be the perfect addition for our Autumn home.

Gregory Hadley Ha! I was just saying we live in East Tennessee, we have a small home but a large piece of land with several mountain ranges behind it. There is an old wood mill that used to take lumber from the mountains. All sorts of bottles and collectibles in there!!! We love where we moved!

Gregory Hadley But back to behind the barn, at the bottom near the creek are the remains of an old wood mill and brick and mortar building from the late 1800’s. There are bottles 100% preserved under the clay that has accumulated. Some filled with honey still, some Coca-Cola, some just no writing but TN, and have liquor in them which is more like gasoline now 😂. Amazing how things can be preserved!!!

Drop a bunch of wood chips there... it will take a season, but it would add a lot to the soil. It will help with aeration, moisture retention, and nutrients. It will raise the acidity of the soil for a bit, but some lime will counteract it easily.

Awesome video bud!! If i may give a couple suggestions on how to richen that soil, all natural. Get woodchips from a fresh cut tree, and dig random holes in the garden area. Bury handfulls of chips and recover with the original soil. Also if you have a dog, bury the dog poop in the garden. Water heavily. unless plenty of rain. let sit a few days. Turn the dirt every week and spread the dirt into spots lacking the chips or poop. It'll all break down fast and provide plenty of nutrition to the soil. After doing this for a couple weeks and further, you won't have to do much just keep up on weeds growing. try it out, and i bet you'll have the best soil in town 👍

The one plant has a pumpkin growing I’m just shocked this happened but nothing we can do. The fence installer was very sorry they accidentally dropped the load of fence on top of the path by the time my husband realized it was to late for them to come back and move it if the patch.

We live on a similar property. Out behind the barn there is a large mountain, at the bottom is a creek, we take our soil from there, but we find spear points, pottery, even old sea crustaceans and we are in eastern TN. Anyway, when it comes to the pumpkin, doesn’t it need to have female flowers that become fertilized?

My seeds sprouted up in like 2 days, now a week later they're already about a foot out, I am so surprised, I wasn't ready for them to do that,i was still working on my 3 sisters planting thing, my corn isn't coming so quickly, green beans are already going up the fence I've got a couple feet away, they just reached over to that instantly before I got my poles up after realizing my corn would take more work and time I guess. Idk. My pumpkins though are what I'm most excited about though, and they're off to an awesome start. I'm just wondering though, I planted 4 seeds in each mound, do I need to spread them out or will they be ok with all 4 growing out of the one mound, the mounds are far apart, but the 4 in one mound are fairly close to each other

With the large leaves, is there a danger of large pests like rats finding shelter or collecting around the pumpkin patches? I just don't want to create a hazard for the homeowners.
