Planting Hyacinth Bulbs & Forcing For Earlier Flowers

Hyacinths are the most beautiful spring flowers. They smell amazing and come in a range of colours. Blooming for me outside in the garden in April here in zone 8b in Scotland. You can force them for earlier flowers indoors over the winter too really easily. In this video I show you how I grow them in the garden, how I grow them in the greenhouse and how I force them in pots for earlier flowers during the winter months.

Hello and thanks so much for watching 😊 I am really glad you are enjoying the videos. We are enjoying some more settled weather after the rain so I have been out starting to clear up the beds for winter and lift all the dahlias. I hope you are getting some good weather too.

I was unable to obtain hyacinth bulbs for indoor forcing until the end of October here in the west of Ireland. I hope to have them bloom at least early next year but would have liked some for Christmas. I shall be following your videos with interest. I have Nigella seeds growing ready for spring. 😊

It’s difficult to get organised early enough to get them started for Christmas flowering. You have to really be getting the bulbs at the end of the summer and the prepared ones give you the best chance for flowering before Christmas. It’s nice though to have them coming through in January, February though the winter if you get them going a bit later. I hope you nigella seedlings are doing well 🌱

Hi and thanks for the information. I want to plant these bulbs in pots so that they will flower in Jan/Feb. I live in zone 7B and have a sun/south facing garage that can regularly get into the 60s/70s inside, even in November. Will that be OK for the potted bulbs?…it’s completely dark in there, however not very cold during the daytime until January.

Hello thanks so much for watching. It may just be too warm for them in the day to get them to flower in your garage if you are having a mild November. The bulbs need a good 10 weeks growing at 35-48F in the dark and then 3 weeks gradually being brought into light and warmth to flower well. They only may need 6 weeks at that temp if pre chilled bulbs and then it takes approx 3 weeks to flowers when you gradually bring them into the light.

Hi are you going to do an update on the anemone and ranunculus As I’m growing along with you in my greenhouse fit the first time this winter, fingers crossed I can keep them all without the frosts touching them. Do you cover up with bubble wrap to protect everything ?

Hi Susan, yes next week is garden and greenhouse catch up week and I am going to be showing you the ranunculus and anemone and how they are getting on. If the temperature really dips well below freezing I cover them with a layer of fleece during the night and take it off during the day.

Interesting :-) I live in a temperate Southern Hemisphere climate and forcing bulbs isn’t as common here (probably because it doesn’t align with a holiday period), and so ‘treated’ bulbs aren’t available. Is there anything that we would need to do to be successful with this? Eg. storing them in the fridge before planting?

Hi, thanks for watching, yes you could chill them in the fridge for the same time period up to 13 weeks to provide similar conditions. You just need to make sure that the bulbs are not in the fridge with fruit which gives off ethylene gas as the fruit ripens and can damage the flowers to come from the bulb.
