Planting Gladiolus Bulbs

Planting Gladiolus Bulbs

This video shows Beautiful true purple Gladiolus that I planted last year. And I show how I planted them with some bulbs that I just bought. I also show pictures of some of the Gladiolus from around our yard. This bed is a full sun bed all day long! We are very hot and humid here in Louisiana and I've learned that I need to be in this bed at daylight as the sun gets on it first out of all the beds in my yard. A lot of bulbs (especially tulips need a certain amount of chill hours, we aren't cold enough in zone 8b so you have to chill them.) But Gladiolus don't have to have the chilling but I chilled these to help them think they had a winter rest time. Gladiolus, Daffodils, Paper whites all do great in our area. Bone Meal is made from bones and is a great food for most bulbs. I will leave these bulbs in the ground and they will come up each year and form "babies" and multiply!

I planted Glads one year and loved them but the wind in Kansas is constant. I was constantly restaking and supporting them.

I do love them...they add a strappy texture to your beds even when they don't have a bloom on them.

Why do you keep bulbs in refrigerator? what’s bone meal for? Can I leave the bulbs in the ground for the next year?

Thanks for your questions Sister! Here in Zone 8b, We are very warm and some bulbs and fruit trees need a certain amount of "chill" hours to flower or produce fruit, (That's why tulips and peony's don't grow here, we aren't cold enough). A way around that is for us to refrigerate bulbs, this makes them think they have had a cold winter. So when I buy bulbs to plant I refrigerate them to help them produce flowers better. Gladiolus, Daffodils, Paper Whites, Iris and Amaryllis all do well here and you can leave them in the ground and they will multiply and in several years you can dig them up and move some to a different spot. Bone Meal is made from Ground up bones and is high in Phosphorus which promotes root growth and great food for bulbs. Thanks for helping me!

I think I planted those last year (maybe the year before)...and I saw yesterday one of the purple glads was about 2 inches tall but the others hadn't come up yet.

@@cindythompsonthecottagegarden I am in zone 8b too. I just bought glads, but I'm scared to plant them now because I don't want the March freeze to get them.
