Planting a Fall Landscape at the Chicken Coop | Gardening with Creekside

We are saying goodbye to the summer annuals and planting a fall landscape at the chicken coop. These sweet fall annuals will carry us through to the spring with their bright, cheery color and provide the chickens with the occasional snack.

Not sure if you'll see this, but I think the non-blooming Mexican sunflower may be a close relative, Tithonia diversifolia (also called Mexican sunflower, or tree marigold), which apparently blooms later and is yellow. Maybe the seed got mixed together at some point, especially as it seems to get weedy.

Maybe if I had a longer season it would have gotten there eventually, but I'm in Ohio. I'm guessing it must have been too much fertilizer and/or water, the ones I put in my neglected back garden this year are blooming like crazy.

I do the same thing every Fall when I think I'm not going to plant fall annuals. We know better! LOL! Wow! It looks totally different around the coop now. Will you ever plant anything permanently around the coop like shrubs and perennials? Will the chickens be cold or in the wind during the winter or does it bother them at all? I got stung twice this year by yellow jackets. So painful. Praying we both have more rain soon!
