Plant Breeding - The Making of a new Vegetable Variety & Back Crossing the Rare Kerala Pumpkin!

Buy Organic Seeds here! www.seedsnow.com/?rfsn=370843... Binu was very kind to give us his old variety of Kerala pumpkin. This vegetable tastes just great! I have decided that it needs to have some more diversity bred in to it. This will become more clear in the video. So I made the cross and now am working on making a new variety but also using the technique of backcrossing, a method to add some more genetic diversity to the old Kerala variety without losing the traits that make it such a time tested variety. Besides plant breading vegetables is a lot of fun. #workwithnature

Just to let you all know. I have noticed a much larger increase of subscribers in the past 4 month. Going from 300 - 800 to 3000 per month. But also there has been an illogical decline in views on every new weekly upload. Going from 2000 - 3000 views for every new upload to now 700 - 1200. Additionally people keep telling me they have been automatically unsubscribed or they do not get a notification anymore of new videos I upload. KZread's algorithm has changed recently strongly favoring daily uploads in feeds. If you wish to subscribe to this channel and actually get a notification, then unfortunately you will also need to click the bell and click the push option. Or follow us on workwithnature twitter or facebook... Sorry for the incontinence caused. David.

How did this turn out? Did you save the old variety? Did you start a whole new one?

Nice video! I think this is a good topic people need to know about - plan generations and varieties. That Kerala pumpkin looks amazing!

It is my understanding and research that inbreeding depression doesn't happen much, if at all, in cucurbits.

Hi Mary, Will be glad to make more. Am thinking of showing how we progress with the back-cross and also the new variety. Will add more detail about crossing plants as some people mentioned they wanted to see that in more detail too. Have a great day. David.

Very interesting... I’ve always wondered how to breed pumpkins and other very easily tainted crops. Thanks for explaining it very simply. Do you use flower bags to prevent cross pollination?

Mostly just tape the tips shut of both male and female flowers that I wish to use the night before.

What type of netting is that on the pumpkins?

how do you prevent them from getting pollinated by bees or anything? do you just cover every female flower with a bag or something before it opens?

  • @workwithnature

The easiest way I found was to just tape both, some male and the few female flowers shut the night before using any tape you have around. Then hand pollinate in the morning. Potential males for the use in pollination are taped so no foreign pollen can get into the males. Then close the female flower shut again once it is all done. We have to hand pollinate here anyways as we are protecting the fruit from fruit fly's using netting and most bees will not get in. The fruit fly lays its eggs in the pumpkins.

do you have a ppm/ ec meter bro? heads up 1 part urine to 4 parts water gets you about 1200ppm which is a medium strength fertiliser

Funny that, as that would be the strength I often use for bigger plants to fertilize and often recommend in some of my videos :) Is what experience has taught me. But I don't really use them as we don't have to be to exact when growing stuff in just soil. But it is interesting never the less and also thanks for the heads up. I can appreciate that it has its applications. One might be my compost tea biochar hydro drip system that we are experimenting on. Am adding urine at 200 mill per day to see if the water can remain clean and also that it will have no smell. This we are adding to a system that takes around 40 - 50 L of water. So far it is working and maybe I could up the urine.

so the material is soaking up all the urine and bacteria is eating it? see now thats good info for me :) yeah man i literally did all the testing 2 days ago and i felt the exact same way and i was using 1:4 ratio in a 5 litre sprayer haha, i was actually over feeding everthing tho i think now lol cause i didnt think it could be so strong.. like there was visible crystals on the soil surface of my seedling soil lol thought i was at a good dilution to use it every watering but now i no.. now that its 2late.. again.. lol :p i think urine is best used to charge a single compost pile method :) but if you dont have compost and you have to buy not fully broken down compost from the store urines a good fertiiser till it breaks down and helps it break down i imagine, finally i can stop peeing into a jug and just pee into the compost toilet again aaah lol

Yep, it is a drip, powered by an air lift pump. The charcoal was inoculated with the correct bacteria and grows plants very well. Here is the link if you want to take a look. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJx4mqx6nsKZZ84.html The bacteria will gobble up all the nutrients in the charcoal and that acts as a filter.

you can dry it out and crumble it up and use it as a potting mix if its from a cow, but its best to compost things like manure andthen use the compost later, dont try making a poo tea trust me or nobody will like you anymore ;p
