    Love your channel! In my opinion, there are plenty of beginning sewing videos out there. The same cannot be said for beginning pattern making. I would love to see you focus on that! Thanks for asking and keep up the great work!

    I, too, am "basic." That's why I love your channel. Most sewists on YT have a very different style than my own. Too colorful, too loose for me. But your taste is more classic. I'd love to see which patterns you use for your pants. Will you be lining them?

  • @PatternScout

    @PatternScout

    Thank you! I can't help but be basic, so I have decided to embrace it! 😅 The fabric I have for the pants should be fine without a lining, so I think I will skip it on the ones I am planning. I think I might do a self-drafted pant (or use a pattern in the Lutterloh kit...) but I was thinking about also sharing some pattern options for them. :)

    I wouldn’t say “basic” like it’s a bad thing! More like classic and elegant! I’m still trying to figure out my style myself and I don’t even know where to begin but having tried and true pieces in your wardrobe like you have that can be “basic” and built upon for many outfits seems like a really good idea and I’m hoping to do the same 😊

    What I love about your channel is the interesting and inspiring content for experienced sewists. Your calm and can-do approach to pattern drafting and hacking, your sew-alongs (ex: the brilliant construction of the Romy yoke was so well done in the sew-along!) and style videos like this keep me coming back. There is so much content for beginners on KZread and elsewhere so it's really nice to find that rare channel that is truly interesting to me, someone who already sews well. My concern about your plan to bring more content for beginners is I'll just be passing on future Pattern Scout videos that I so look forward to and enjoy so much. Hope this helps. Thanks for listening!

    I love your plain, classic and elegant style and it's why I watch your channel! You have a great no-nonsense approach to sewing and style. I am looking forward to your fall makes, especially the blazer and coats. I am currently making your Poppy blouse out of a white embroidered double gauze and I think it will come out great. Love your pattern, and would like to see more PS patterns, but at the same time, I enjoy this channel too. I have a request: would you please make some things from existing patterns that I can buy and sew along with you? While I know that you like to draft your own patterns, I am terrified of drafting my own, and so prefer to start with a printed pattern and then go from there.

  • @PatternScout

    Thank you so much, Alexandra! So glad you are making the Poppy Blouse (thank you!) and double gauze sounds so lovely for it. I was just thinking today that I might start sharing more existing patterns (even if I draft something, sharing a ready-made pattern or two as an option for those who don't want to draft).

    Oh I'm so excited for beginner videos. I just have dumb questions like how do you know what size needle to use, what stitch length, what type of thread, how do you set the machine up (I'm sure that varies by machine), what patterns to pick for beginners, what fabrics. So these might be too basic to keep the interest of most of your viewers but maybe you could throw some of these in when doing more interesting things. You have inspired me to want to learn how to sew. I love the basic and classic things you sew. They look so good on you. So professional. Oh, also how to fit things to your body. Other resources like books, other videos, etc. I guess I want to know a lot as right now I know nothing. My dream is someday to make a classic wool coat. That's far in the future. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos. ❤

    I love all of these suggestions--not dumb questions at all! These are exactly the types of questions I get regularly, so I think a lot of folks would like videos on these topics! I've added them all to my list! Thanks so much, and I'm so glad you are feeling inspired to sew!

    I am enjoying your channel too, as I also like classic clothes and basics. I would love to learn more about taking a sloper or basic pattern that we have made to fit us and use it to draft our own items, especially in regards to the ease to use. I ask this because I get so tired adjusting a new pattern for my square shoulders, and other fitting issues, as I'm sure we all have. An example of what I mean is I would love to use my sloper that has about 2 to 2.5" of ease and learn how to add a bit of ease for a looser blouse (like 4" ease), keeping the bust dart and how that ease affects the armscye and sleeve, if at all, and how that ease might affect the bust dart. I think I understand drafting basics like changing necklines and making collars, it's just the wearing ease that I struggle with. Just wondering if this is something you might be interested in doing a video about? Thanks so much for listening 😊!

    I really love your videos! You keep it real. When I came back to my sewing after years I started watching YT videos. I would get excited and buy so many patterns and fabric! Now I have so much of it that I can’t get to all of them. 😅I came across a book by Sandra Betzina that she literally stated throw all your fabric away and stop buying fabric unless you have plans for it. Stop the insanity 🥺. She said how some prints go out of style. I wish I had found good sensible advice as a beginner. Sew alongs is where I learned a lot! Especially the ones that cover the type of fabric appropriate for the patter and even needle size down to the thread. I watched many of Mimi G’s cuz she kept it simple! I teach sewing to locals and some don’t even know what interfacing is or a walking foot, type of stitches for type of garment etc. And where to get some of those products. I think it’s important to cover all the steps! But please don’t forget us advanced sewers 😅. I have yet to sew a coat or pair of jeans as I’m limited on time. But would love it if you put out a sew along on your coat and jean journey 😄🥰😍🎉And that gorgeous cowl top 🤩I would definitely buy your pattern 😊

    @@PatternScout Lots do easy fitting like full bust etc but not many seem to do it on a body and explain it. I was fortunate to take pattern drafting so I understood something but even then they just used the standard size 10 and not fitting for unusual shapes. My life became so much easier when I discovered that taking 1/2 to 3/4 " out of above the arm notch (and sleeves) made my world a happier place. Another one for me was sloping shoulders. Hope this helps.

    Yay! I love wardrobe planning too and fall is my fave season. I’m excited about the trench coats, that is a project on my list too but it seems a little daunting. I’m sure you will inspire me! One thing I usually tell beginners is that it takes time to figure out your adjustments and what fabrics/colors/patterns you like. You might end up not reaching for a lot of what you initially make, but don’t get discouraged because that will improve over time! It’s a whole other skill on top of learning to sew.

    So, I've just done a change of seasons wardrobe edit and have 2 giant bags full of things I've made but do not wear. I've learned so much in the last 3 years of sewing about my personal style, and while it's been a pricey journey, I'd say it's been worth it just to know I'm refining my aesthetic and skills and finally feeling good in what I wear. My fall plans are so so basic, but I so so love them...and they may include a few of your patterns...4 to be exact🤩. All that to say, I feel ya. Thanks for sharing! And, while I'm sad the pattern making is slowing down for a season, I always enjoy your videos and am excited for you on this fun new journey! All the very best with it!! x

    Oh I have been there many times with the wardrobe changes! I actually probably need to clean out a few items from past seasons that are not getting worn. I'm always so conflicted because I hate getting rid of stuff I made (even if it's not great haha). So happy you'll be making my patterns, thank you!! I was trying to game plan the other day for ways that I can keep pattern development moving along while I work on YT. I have so many ideas for patterns! Thanks for following along on my sewing/patternmaking/YT journey! :)

    You don’t mention it, but your ability to pick things that will match is unusual. Getting colors and patterns that you love AND that you can wear is the hardest thing for the home sewer. It’s so easy to fall in love with a fabric you’ll never be comfortable wearing and doesn’t quite match anything you own. Long ago a friend told me to only buy things I really liked, then, because I like what I like, they’ll always end up matching. I have found that to be true.

  • @PatternScout

    This advice is so spot on! I've gotten into the habit of asking myself if something will fit my wardrobe "brand" haha (which sounds so cheesy, but it really helps me choose fabrics that I know I'll wear!). As much as I would like to be the type of person that confidently wears bright and bold colors and patterns, I feel most at home and stylish in more practical pieces that I can mix and match. I always go for the solid classics in my wardrobe while the more adventurous pieces get hardly any wear. It's something I have learned to embrace!

    I’m a beginner and have watched your videos as I start my journey! I’ve made one dress so (not counting my teenage years where I cut up clothing just to make something that didn’t fit…) I use a really old sewing machine inherited from my mother and notice stitches skip. I’ve tried adjusting tension on scraps and can find a balance that works, but every once and a while a few stitches skip. Would love content on knowing what sewing machine needle to use, what causes stitch skips, and when to know if your sewing machine needs a tune up - admittedly, my 20+ year old one probably needs one…😂 thanks so much, look forward to binging your content!

  • @meganlb01

    @meganlb01

    Жыл бұрын

    If it helps - a sewing machine would ideally be serviced at least once a year and you’d usually give it a service if it’s been in storage for a while. It’s really worthwhile. Those old machines are often indestructible and many of my sewist friends prefer them as work horse machines because of their reliability. You should change your machine needle after every significant project. They go blunt surprisingly quickly. I usually estimate 6-10 hours of sewing per needle. If you look up the needle brand you use, they’ll probably have a chart on their website that explains the use for each needle. Enjoy sewing! It only gets more and more satisfying and fun!

  • @PatternScout

    That's great, Erica! Megan is right--regular servicing and changing the needles often is a good practice. Every time I've had a machine tune-up it's been around $90-100 and it is very worth it. I'm actually thinking I need to take my vintage Kenmore machine in for service, too, after reading your comment haha. They are so sturdy! I want to do some videos on these topics, so thanks for the comment/confirmation I need to do it! :)

    On the topic of beginning sewing content. Sewing has been something that I really wanted to do but really struggled to comprehend. A lot of beginning sewing content is about copying existing items of clothing or making something out of basic rectangles based on body measurements. However, this type of content rarely focuses on garment construction, facings are often left out, finishes aren’t as nice and the end result is a garment that doesn’t last very long or poorly fitting. This left me feeling deflated and unable to achieve a rtw quality item. It wasn’t until I discovered indie patterns with their in-depth instructions that I really felt successful in sewing. I understand garment construction so much better now. A basic well instructed hackable pattern would be my best advice to someone who wants to start making their own clothes but doesn’t want a huge investment. Such as the Aston top by Helen’s closet. I have discovered your channel as a more experience sewer and you make me feel more comfortable to draft my own patterns and hack patterns now that I have quite a few successful pattern experiences under my belt. A suggestion for beginning sewing content would be to show how to hack a pattern into multiple different garments, maybe the comfy tee.

    For beginner/intermediate topics - I'd love to hear your thoughts on "ease" and how to judge from a pattern how much ease you need. Pattern size measurements and finished garment measurements are all fine - but on so many patterns (bought or PDF) I feel like there is a LOT of ease - and it scares me to size down to what I think I want (and even then there is still a LOT of ease). How can we get less "uneasy" about determining ease? Thanks! Love your channel.

    I’m so jealous of your skills. I don’t think I will ever be able to do this.

    As a confident beginner, I would very much like to learn how to adjust a pattern I bought to fit me better.. Things like grading between sized for example, I usually choose the bigger size because I am not sure how to do it. and them you spend a lot of time on an item and its not sitting well, really discouraging :(

    Could you please make a video on how to select good quality fabric on line and where to look? Perhaps make a series of videos - what terminology to look for and what sites to look for them. For example, I stumbled on to a lesson on how to pick out good quality denim. They taught you to look for terminology like sanforized, look for the word "true selvage", look for the word "twill weave" and what weight NOT to buy and to look for a very tight weave. I got my fabric using that guide and my jeans look amazing because of the high quality fabric. (THANK YOU WILLIAM!!) I find the physical fabric stores sell really bad fabric and when I try to sew on them it's almost impossible to get the fabric squared up. Therefore, your garment looks like crap and unfit to wear. So you end up throwing it in the trash where it belongs! All that work for nothing. HELP!! Buying good fabric is so hit and miss.

    I prefer to use the term “Classic” rather than basic & that’s what I like about your style

    Ooh I am a beginner, and I find it daunting when choosing fabrics especially when I’m not confident that what I am sewing will ever see daylight or will I ruin it… so try to stick with cheaper fabrics, and wondering will it look cheap once sewn up
