Planning and flying my first "Dead Reckoning" flight in years

In preparation for a "retraining" dead-reckoning flight as ordered by the CAA. I did a practice dead reckoning flight from Dunkeswell to Popham. Just my eyes, the chart, and no auto-pilot.
Then I flew back using SkyDemon and it was much easier!

    It’s amazing how quickly confidence can ebb away as a pilot, and also how quickly it returns. I enjoy your honestly and think that was a brave flight considering your recent brush with the CAA, for I’d be using the magenta line of SD as a rail track to ensure I didn’t infringe again for quite a while. So very well done, Charlie👌👍 👏👏

    Thanks Kevin. It’s because of the CAA asking me to retrain for dead reckoning that I was practicing it! Also, I did have SkyDemon running so I could hear audio airspace alerts in my headset as a safety backup.

    Even with the luxury of SkyDemon I still really enjoy a good "old school nav flight" now and then. Did one again just a couple of weeks ago, chose 2 airfields and took a chart, hand written plog and everything. Just spending an evening doing the maths is also part of the fun. One of my instructors told me he always flew with SkyDemon, except for when he'd go abroad. He'd plan a trip to Germany (i'm based in NL) and he'd do it old school, just to keep the skill alive. Because it is perishable. (As you've probably noticed.) Good stuff again Charlie. Always happy to see another flight vlog up on your channel.

    You can (maybe) get away without driving a car for a while, and then still go and drive - but even that I feel "out of practice" - this could be fatal in an aircraft.

    IMHO, it's good practice to occasionally fly by "old school" navigation methods. Overreliance on tech will leave you hanging should your devices fail you.

    Well that was foolish Charlie……Dusty would definitely heard that!😱😉 Good to see you flying again, for good dead reckoning practise why not find targets (chalk figures (Cerne Abbas is difficult), Roman Forts, landmarks) rather than airfields. Oh and do it with SkyDemon turned off, much more rewarding when it works out..

    I wanted to build confidence and start with an easy one! Will make it tougher on the next one.... good idea. SkyDemon wasn't showing on the screen, so I didn't use it in flight, but wanted to record my track so I could look at it afterwards and see how far off I was!

    Charlie, Thanks. The timing of this video could not have come at a better time for me. Student pilot still at the navigation phase of my training. Dead reckoning has amazed me at how accurate it can be, even with a 'thumb' for 'about' 5 nautical miles, but we do also have SkyDemon, which is simulated failed as part of the training half the time. Using the two side by side has to be the way forward I'm sure. The difference between making the plog with SkyDemon and a whizz wheel though!! I loose the will to live!

    I was a student pilot in the early 90's - paper map and the wheel is all we had. No "go to" GPS to bail us out if we were lost. Not even Google maps to study the terrain before flying - and definitley not MSFS 2020 to actually fly the terrain on an accurate simulator first.

    Enjoyed this Charlie! Good idea to practice traditional skills and put SkyDemon down. Very true that currency is often more valuable than the overall experience level.

    @@CharlieLamdin I was just flying with my friend in his 182 yesterday. When I saw the canard I was so confused. I think the canard is so underrated. I was laughing when you said 35 knots level flight. That’s incredible. Stalls must be fun lol. Or should I call it settling hahaha.

    Exactly - in my most recent biannual revalidation wiht an instructor, we were straight and level at 30 KIAS!! He said if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes he wouldn't have believed it.
