I grew up just a few miles from this museum. I used to love visiting, watching the air shows and having lunch with my family at Flow’s. I had the privilege of speaking with actual B-17 crew men, Wilbur and Carl. In my early twenties, back in 2009 I used to volunteer there on weekends. Love that place!

What an amazing collection. I live in eastern England where most of the 8th Air Force was stationed in WW2. An area of our village is named after a B-17 that crashed on the village during the war. My great uncle was one of the youngest Squadron Leaders in the RAF in the war flying Spitfires; when I joined the army, a chap I was training with had a Finnish grandfather who was a high scoring ace with the Luftwaffe!! I wonder if they ever met??!

The P-38 in this video named Skidoo used to be named JOLTIN JOSIE When I was 16 it passed through Courtesy Aircraft when I worked with the mechanic and that was the first warbird I ever washed. Enjoyed the video Ed. I am lucky enough to be able to visit P.O.F. any time as I live in So. Cal. It looks like the A6M5 Zero must have been out of town when you shot your tour. One of the rarest planes in the collection along with the Northrope N9M flying wing witch you did get on film.. The staff at the museum is the best. I recommend the Flying History Day events the first Saturday each month. They feature an aircraft from the collection with a great presentation and usually get some old veteran pilots to speak of their time in the war effort. Great stuff. At the end of the program they will fire up the aircraft featured and fly it for the group that attends.

I was at that museum in the mid 80s and it's nice to see a lot of the same planes there. Now they are twice the age they were when I saw them last but they look just as good. There was a real ME-262 there when I was there, it looks like it's gone now. I took a lot of photos and video tape..

Impressive museum! They have the only flying Mitsubishi Zero that is 99% accurate to the originals (except the carburetors). Their vintage English collection s also impressive with the Old Gloster Meteor, Vampire. My dad told me that he had the opportunity to fly these at the end of WWII when he was flying for the RCAF but he could barely fit into them. They are best known for their restorations... especially P-51's & P-38's. They also had a Me 262 Nazi jet fighter that they were restoring that got sold to someone. They also had an Me 163 Komet that wasn't in flying condition... probably not the greatest idea to try to fly one since they killed many German pilots on landing on a single skid. I highly recommend this museum and their annual air show where you get to see many vintage war birds flying over a two day period.

Yes - that is the main thing for me also:)
I went there in '97 whilst on holiday in the States - my first time over there. Had a long chat with a Veteran who was sat in the shade underneath the wing of the B17 Wilbur Richardson, ball turret gunner - he had a set of photos showing the demise of another B17 which drifted off course and was underneath his at the bomb release. Took one of the horizontal stabilisers clean off and it went down. He liked the T-shirt I was wearing - ' 100 BG Thorpe Abbotts' and he told me he was stationed not far from there. It was an honour to meet him. Princess Diana was killed a few days later and I ended up queuing behind Shania Twain in a coffee shop in the Mirage a few days after that. I asked her about the value of the coins I had in my hand - it was my first visit. I didn't know who she was, being from England where there's no Country music. She said that we had both just lost somebody dear - I was confused until I realised she was Canadian and was talking about Diana. I had just lost my Dad, which was slightly more important but I just agreed without mentioning it. She explained what a dime was and counted my change to make sure I had enough for a cup of Joe. She sure was pretty. Later on, back in England I saw the cover of 'Come On Over' and the penny dropped. You don't forget a face like that!

@@EdWhisenantAviation You're welcome. I loved visiting America BC (Before Children). We were married in Las Vegas and I managed to fit in a tour of Nelllis AFB whilst there and have twice visited the Alamo (where I was amazed and proud to see a St George's Cross hanging in there). Did a tour of the Blue Ghost in Corpus Christie too - boy was it hot there! I love my military history - we, of course, have plenty of it in England, particularly aviation. Check out the video on here of the upcoming Flying Legends 2020 at Duxford, it will give you goosebumps. We go every year, it's the airfield from where Douglas Bader flew his Big Wing during the Battle Of Britain. Last year they had on display an original model of the Eder dam - which was used to familiarise the Dambuster crews with the topography. It has a superb American Air Museum and it's not far from Madingley where there is a US cemetery for 8th AF boys. I believe it's actually designated US 'soil'.

@@EdWhisenantAviation I suspect that Flying Legends will get cancelled too - everything is over here. Before I go here's a fun fact for you. I live a mile away from a former aerodrome in a town in Robin Hood country - . Rolls-Royce have a facility there, and have had since the First World War. This is the place where they first fitted the Merlin to the P-51 airframe! I grew up watching the Rolls-Royce Spitfire (they still operate it) doing impromptu displays over our house prior to the season starting and is the reason why I am still obsessed with Piston engined aircraft. The runway is still there but the site is succumbing to house building - the runway is still used by the BBMF as a waypoint to displays during the summer. Every summer weekend we get a low flypast of either a Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane or Dakota (or a combination) as they make their way to a display. Nice conversing with you.ll
