I was a tower controller for a year at Kai Tak and then for 2 years at CLK. These are some great shots. I always marveled at how much punishment a 747 could absorb on landing! Landing slots were restricted and that's why most operations were heavies. Maximum load per slot.

I've always been curious as to why Kai Tak footage always had so many wide body aircraft compared to other international hubs from the same time period. When you say that there were restricted landing slots, does that mean that only "x" number of narrow body aircraft were allowed at one time? Or would the airlines just have to pay a larger fee to land smaller aircraft? Also, was this just due to the limited number of parking stands? Thank you in advance!

@@jimcosklo701 Kai Tak wasn’t a particularly large airport…even though I don’t know 100%, I can basically guarantee that it means there was a comparatively limited number of operations in and out of the airport for any given period of time so airlines would fly the largest equipment in their fleet that the facilities could handle due to “only X number of flights going in and out of Hong Kong”.

I did some plane spotting at Kai Tak. I was living there at the time and a friend, who did plane spotting, came to visit. Watched from the end of the runway. We also went to the target on the mountain where planes flew to before turning to the runway. Every plane looked like it was going to crash into you, they looked so close before turning. Loved the airport, land and be home in minutes.

I took Qantas flights (shuttle between Hong Kong and Bangkok) in Jan / Feb 1995, so that I have the honor to take off and landing at Kai Tak International Airport. The experience is so impressive and amazing, especially when I felt I could touch the building below the wing tips. About 12 years later, I paid for flying in a A320 professional simulator in a HK shopping mall and I selected to land at Kai Tai, which is the first time I know how hard to land there. Great place, Great Hong Kong. Sad for its falling.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories of the most exciting airport and city back in the "good old days"! I lived in Asia for ten years and flew in and out of Kai Tak numerous times. Landings were never boring.🤣. Once, on a Thai 747 we hit the runway so hard that the oxygen masks deployed and the overhead storage bins popped open. When you came in over Kowloon and made that hard right turn it looked as if you could reach out and snatch the drying laundry right off of the balconies. I really like seeing films shot from an aircraft coming in for a landing at Kai Tak. It's always worth seeing. 👍❤✈

Those are still widely used today. I agree about flying on them. I had to fly from CLT to PIT once. USAir used 737's mostly for that route bc they are only about an hour apart not air. Well I got on the plane and it was friggin huge!! Been drinking in a bar and didnt see the plane out the window at night. The FA took me to my sear. Ir looked endless, 9-10 seats wide. There was maybe 10 pax on the plane. I had my own FA. I asked him why such a big plane? He said "bc when we land in PIT, the plane will be restocked and refueled and then it's going to Paris"....lol!!

Its so cool to see how operations were there. I wonder how hard it actually is to loop around that mountain. I would love to see it reopen and watch some operations. But we're lucky that you got this on camera before it closed. Edit: that FedEx 747 gives me nostalgia

It's hard to forget that strong smell of sea water when the plane touched down on the runway at night back in 1983. When I left HK to emigrate to oversea in 1986, the airport was still in use.

That wasn’t just sea water. A story I have heard about the comedian Spike Milligan landing there. He asks ‘What is that smell?’. A crew member replies ‘That is sh!t Mr Milligan’. Spike says ‘I know it’s sh!t, but what’s it doing in the plane?’. 😁

Brings back memories. I've spent a little time on top of that parking garage, or multi-level car park as they call it. You can see the humidity. Bringing your camera out of an airconditioned hotel or car or bus would immediately fog up everything inside and out. I thought of making putting a bottle of hot water into an ice chest to preheat the camera, but I never did it. I wish there were some wide shots of the approach to show how close the buildings were. Those were the days, when lots of my customers were in Hong Kong. Now they're in China, so I land at the new airport and take a boat to Shenzhen. Or at least I did pre-covid.

I remember landing there and when the plane I was on made it’s turn back to the terminal there was a plane stuck in the mudflat at the end of the runway. The authorities had the tail assembly cut off so they could resume operations. Loved old Hong Kong, NYC without rules.

I flew in and out of Kai Tak numerous times in the 90s, usually up to 17hr + flights from London with a refuelling stop somewhere in the middle east, the only thrilling part was the landing, even in inclement weather, the only time I remember the runway closing was in 1993 during tropical storm Ira when a China Airlines 747 skidded off the end of the runway, fortunately there were no fatalities, it's not the same landing at CLK, what wonderful memories this video brings ❤

Then flew out 2 days before it shut down. Flew back in to new airport with total chaos, 3 days after it opened. For sure, greatest airport to watch arrivals. Thanks for sharing!

The China Air 747SP at :40 is the same aircraft involved in the China Air Flight 006 mishap where it dove 30,000ft uncontrolled, resulting in partial destruction of the empennage, as well as other damage. This took place in February 1985. This plane is currently stored in disrepair at Tijuana Intl, after being discarded by a religious group due to lack of airworthiness. It is easily visible on satellite images of TIJ.
