Planche Journey at 58 yrs OLD

Follow my journey back to straddle planche at 58yrs old.
Back in 2019 I broke my Biceps training the planche.
It was completely my fault. I was switching between
parallettes and the ground and turned my hands
around to try to extend my lean forward.
Huge mistake!
I exposed my distal bicep tendon too much
and it snapped. Lessons learned and now recovered,
in the summer of 2020 I began straddle planche training
again on bars only. What follows is my journey at 58yrs
to get back the move I first got 4 years before.
I know the end result is not perfect, far from it.
My arms needs straightening
My legs need to be lower
But you know what
I feel pretty good to get this far.
Don't let anyone tell you
you're too old to have a go.
Just get out there and do the best you can.
And you know what in my books
that will always be good enough.
AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

Well done. Being someone who has absolutely mastered planche to the point where I have done it on two fingers, I can honestly say that that is a good planche. Additionally your mindset is commendable. Everyone’s achievements are truly their own. If you are happy with your result then that is the more important than anything else. The whole purpose of doing such exercises is to feel a sense of achievement and simultaneous demonstrate strength. Once again, good job bro. 👏👏👏

Thank you very much for sharing your planche journey. You are insanely strong, especially for your age! I'm turning 29 soon and wasn't sure whether or not it makes sense to start training towards the straddle planche, given i'm 191cm tall with a 2m wingspan, a very disadvantageous build for planche stuff. Height doesn’t matter since the taller you are the longer your arms are, making the angle of lever the same as for a shorter guy anyways. It’s the weight that matters and taller people usually weigh a lot more which is why the planche is much harder. Since you are tall, try to keep your weight under 90kg and it should be doable

Hi Mark. Your content is pure motivation. I reinjured my distal bicep tendon and wondering if you have some tidbits to share training-wise.. Last time I rehabbed it through eccentric training with slow progressive overload but out of the sudden it came back. It seems like it is chronic tendinitis and I dont want it to progress to degeneration and finally rupture because aside from training I work in manual labor. For now I dont need to work because of the pandemic so I can rehab it.. I went to orthopedics but it's the same r.i.c.e protocol, dont lift weights take anti inflammatories etc. And I rather take advice from someone whose been in the trenches like you. Any insight will help..

Hi Kostas, sorry to hear that. If you haven't already I have a whole series of videos on my rehab on my channel. What you were doing sounds pretty balanced. Was it that you tried to rehab too quickly with too much overload? Were you given a rehab plan to follow by your physio or surgeon? This was the second time it ruptured right?

How's your diet ? Do you find you have to eat a lot for this type of training and what's your weight? I'm 5" 9 inches, 85kg and find static hold exercises tough. Am I too heavy as I've read there's a weight issue if you are to heavy. Truly amazing work and strength Mark.

Great question bro. I follow a Mediterranean diet primarily, no processed foods and very little sugar or alcohol. I'm also just short of 5'9" myself and weigh in at 75kg. Yes extra weight will significantly affect your static hold times so shedding a few pounds will def improve your performance. Good luck

well done mate, pretty impressive stuff. How do you rate the risk versus reward for planche? As an oldie myself I find myself evaluating risk of injury and lost training time versus the reward of doing things like planche alot more than my younger days.

Thanks and Great question bro. That certainly goes through my mind the older I get. What I would say is, I train a hellava lot smarter these days and take a lot of time planning and care when executing my training. As long as you have a solid program and you listen to your body when it screams rest and you are patient and don’t rush your training the planche or close to it is totally achievable. Just depends on how much sacrifice and you want to make to gain it.

Great question! It’s a tough move that required a lot of time dedicated to it to achieve. This meant I had to sacrifice training in other ways but on a one/two off basis that was fine. Looking to achieve a number of other moves now before I consider going back to it.

@@MarkLidsterfitnessgeezer that is true! When I learned it I stopped every other exercise in order to just focus on it for 5 weeks, it was very mentally tough and required a great deal of patience! I think you'll get it with straight locked arms when you're ready to practice it again and wouldn't have to put so much time into it again as you did in the beginning. Best wishes on your endeavors.
