Bridget, thank you for your insights. My team splits planning responsibilities by subject and then we meet to share plans and ideas at our CLT meeting. Your video gave me a new perspective on planning. Thanks! Have a great week!

I wish I had this for Grades 6-8. This is fantastic for departmentalized ELA classrooms in elementary school.

Hello! I love the way all of this is laid out but there is something from a philosophical standpoint that I’m struggling with. As I dive deeper into the Science of Reading research with my school district it makes me stop and question this format of teaching. What you are describing in this video is very much a skill or standards based way of teaching where the skill is at the forefront of your lessons instead of knowledge building and vocabulary being at the forefront. You are teaching skills in isolation with disjointed text that don’t follow the same topic. Does this make you nervous encouraging teachers to teach in this way when the latest research doesn’t support it? Do you find school districts are starting to move away from this type of teaching?

Thank you so much for your insight. The science of reading is based on explicit and systematic instruction in which it connects multiple skill sets for students to develop those pathways within the brain. These connections help students to achieve the outcome which is comprehension. The science is not necessarily about teaching content but rather helping teachers understand that reading is complex and there are multiple facets that need to be addressed when teaching any form of content or skill. Research shows that in order for students to comprehend they need to have adequate background knowledge. This is a MUST. Many schools and core programs are now moving to a content centered approach. However, I would argue that in some cases there are core programs that lack relatedness and content that is worth an entire unit devoted to it. Who determines what content should taught to support reading? There continues to be research pushed out on content focused reading instruction but there are few studies that are available on the success of this approach (and that has a wide enough pool in demographics). Background knowledge should always be addressed but that does not necessarily mean it needs to consume the entire month. And… one final point is that educators need to connect the content that relates to the lives of the children. Now, I do like a connected approach to teaching reading but there are few texts that are at the readability of students in the younger ages which makes it challenging to plan for these types of lessons. Connection is ALWAYS preferred and that is what Bridging Literacy promotes…connection between reading and writing.

We are working to build task cards and smaller passages that are based on content with literature and informational passages for Bridging Literacy. This is something that we have had in the works for the past 4 months.
