Plain Old Bad Luck...

In a previous video • Buick Encore -Towed In... I had a look at a ladies Buick Enclave that was towed in for a no start condition. Ended up needing a rear differential clutch module. Shortly after that her transmissions lines rotted out and were spraying transmission fluid everywhere and then right after that the rear differential started leaking and not just from a seal! What the world!

    Before anyone goes full Karen in the comments please try and understand a few things. It is not my job to go over every single car soup to nuts that rolls in my bays. I do the job I was hired to do and then I move on with life. *IF THE CUSTOMER REQUESTS* a full vehicle inspection, then at that point, I provide them with that service and tell them what I see and give estimates on the repairs. If I gave every car a full look over and a list with estimates it would consume my entire day giving free estimates and let's be honest, 95% of what I work on is rotted out junk and most of them only have 3 or 4 years left before they go to car heaven. On the other hand, if a vehicle comes in for a repair and I notice a glaringly obvious safety issue I will let the customer know. Remember though, *I CAN NOT MAKE THEM FIX IT OR HOLD THEIR CAR UNTIL THEY DO.* It is 100% illegal in the USA to hold a customer's car for any reason other than non-payment and force them to repair it. That is called extortion. Hope that clears some stuff up for those that are concerned. On a side note, I spoke with this customer and she was already aware of the other issues with the MIL (P0420) as well as the brakes. She does want an estimated cost of the repair to replace the rear diff and to replace the broken spring and is not to concerned about the leaking A/C compressor. If I get the job, I'll try and record it for you folks. Cheers, -Eric O.

    I agree Eric, in Maryland you sign a workorder that states what you want done. If the garage does anything else with out informing you and creating an extended workorder, that work is free to the customer and if the garage attempts to remove the parts, they can lose their license. Not to mention end up in court.

    @@fastglassman624 with it already rotting out, how porus aluminum is, all that fluid on and around the crack, i dont think jb weld would hold very well, even if it did, the crack would continue to spread, even if you could get it clean enough to hold. Jb weld is great stuff, and can fix almost everything, but its really not worth his time and reputation to use it in a situation like this. Best of replacing it because its most likely going to continue to spread, then she'll be mad at him. Pretty crazy seeing aluminum deteriorate like that on an rear dif. Gm must use some trash alloy. I know its the rust belt, but ive even seen multiple sets of gm/caddy rims stop holding air because of corrosion when they were only a couple-few years old. Ive never seen aluminum corrode that bad, unless it was because of dissimilar metals, but never in the middle of big thick cast parts like that. Quality of everything has gone to shit in america. Its like all manufacturers care about is lasting long enough for the lease and warranty. Everythings made to fail. Nothing is made to last anymore. Its pretty sad

I would tell um "Hey it takes a real man to walk a dog like this." and we all would laugh. But my neighbor's son got me..He said "Next you'll be wearing a pink hoodie with ears.." If you are in any type of repair/service business, you have definitely met Mr and Mrs. Eversince at least once. Trying to educate people with that mentality is usually useless but there are a few that you can educate and make understand that just because you fixed one item doesn't mean that nothing else is ever going to break again.

    I used to gripe about cars/truck in Texas when the A/C compressor/expansion valve/dryer had to be replaced. Mostly on my old Dodge RAM pickup with 212,000 miles on it and almost no rust. And I've had to do that twice. Dang old truck... that thing is old enough to vote now. I guess I'll just have to shut up about the little stuff, and thank my lucky stars at night are big and bright... Deep in the heart of Texas.... sorry. Can't help myself. I hit that like, been subscribed for almost 6 years and rang that bell. Say HI to the family and keep the dirty side down.

I enjoyed the video. When I was a 12 year old boy, I'd hang around a shop like yours, they would let me actually fix things and I would absorb everything. This was one of the toughest I've had to watch. I had pretty much the same thing happen a couple of times and it's always with people who know nothing about cars. Sadly, there are a lot of incompetent and/or dishonest shops out there so even the nicest person is going to question "But it just started after you worked on it". If you're trying to do the right thing, that talk with the customer is gutwrenching. Hate to go so long, but one I've never forgotten is a 80 something Impala with a 350 that came in for an oil change and never started again. The only thing that saved me with the customer is that the timing chain had gotten so loose it wore a hole in the timing cover before it failed completely. Bad luck that it let go when it was shut off after driving on the rack.

Seems to me the people that are designing and producing the automobiles might be a major part of the problem. Seems a lot of vehicles are not built to last and not built for ease of maintenance and repair- and that would be a whole other story. Thanks for the video, seems to me you are doing the best quality work that the customer will allow, good job.

    If it were mine, I'd clean the housing, solvent wash a couple of times, then coat the entire top with Marine-Tex, and pray for the best. Unless you can get a southern unit for a couple hundred bucks, and a couple hundred in labor, a new set of springs and a front brake job. The catalyst might be salvageable with a flush of powered injector cleaner. If not, send her out of state for a converter install. AC? Who needs AC? Still cheaper than a year of new car payments. "The catalyst might be salvageable with a flush of powered injector cleaner. If not, send her out of state for a converter install." Unless the car stays out of NY the other shop still has to follow NY law on the replacement. NY regs changed in January as well, ALL converter replacements have to be CARB or OEM regardless of the emissions sticker, all the way back to pre OBD vehicles. It gets VERY expensive if you violate that law as well - New York State’s Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) Sections 71-2103 and 71-2105 provide for penalties of up to $18,000 in the case of a first violation and an additional penalty of up to $15,000 for each day during which such violation continues. The ECL provides for a penalty of up to $26,000 for a second and subsequent violations and an additional penalty of up to $22,500 for each day during which such violation continues. The criminal penalty provisions provide for a penalty of up to $18,000 and/or up to one year of imprisonment for each violation. It also provides for a penalty of up to $26,000 and and/or imprisonment for each violation when such conviction is for a second or subsequent offense.

    If it were my own car.. there's enough room in there that I would probably clean it off as best I could.. and dab some layers of JB-weld over the cracks. lol. All it has to do is stop the leaks. I've done this before on motorcycle engines, and also lawnmowers. It works surprisingly well. Especially with this crack being on top and not the bottom somewhere-- where the oil is much more likely to leak from.

    Well Eric, As you said in the beginning, this one is in tough condition and very likely when the all wheel drive system was repaired, it is quite likely that the additional torque on the rear differential caused is to buckle across those weak points, especially the way those carriers are mounted in the housing. Tough luck, sorry for the lady.🤙

  • @calholli
    @calholliАй бұрын

    I think that broken rear spring and the broken case have a common story to tell. lol.. It sure seems more like a blunt force break than corrosion. It's very clean looking, other than the dirt/mud on top. It has likely been that way for a long time and is only slinging out the extra oil that your boy put in. Personally, If I were her: I'd just run it. The crack is on top and shouldn't leak so much once the oil gets back down to a certain level. But like you're saying-- as shot as that car is, I'd just run it and not pump anymore money into it. It has probably been that way for years, judging by the broken spring.
