No one understands how amazing that accompanist is. Watch her play everything completely by intuition and reading the maestros gestures and anticipating his next move.

What an EXCELLENT mentor he is, ugh. So precise, detailed and clear about those nuances. And such a gentle, benevolent, sensitive soul. Him teaching reveals even further his well-loved charm & charisma as a person and artist, on top of having one of the most outstanding voices and performance abilities of all time. The student is extremely fortunate to have had this opportunity with the great Domingo.

TO SING AN ARIA: breath + technicque + voice + undestand the text + know what the author wants to express + melodramatic feeling, so a lot of education education and education. Bravissimo Domingo

One of the most useful singing masterclasses on KZread. I am an aspiring singer, sometimes soprano but more high mezzo, and this masterclass has so many tips for me on how to pronounce and sing each word and phrase and things on how to use the voice and musicianship. What is also delightful is that it is Placido Domingo, who is, always has been, always will be one of my favourite singers ever. It is great to see someone who truly knows what he is saying without offending while being firm too.

Wow, teaching a masterclass and he was not even half way into his singing career. One of his greatest assets is and has always been his great musicality which is on display here. Is it any wonder he has had a career as a conductor? He may not be an orchestra builder or the greatest technician (as a conductor) but performances he has led all have a great flow to them.

🤣 🤣 🤣 Y si no te queda claro puedes leerte la definición de la Wikipedia: The difference between a normal class and a master class is typically the setup. In a master class, all the students (and often spectators) watch and listen as the master takes one student at a time.[1] The student (typically intermediate or advanced, depending on the status of the master) usually performs a single piece which they have prepared, and the master will give them advice on how to play it, often including anecdotes about the composer, demonstrations of how to play certain passages, and admonitions of common technical errors. The student is then usually expected to play the piece again, in light of the master's comments, and the student may be asked to play a passage repeatedly to attain perfection.

It is essential that there is support from the diaphragm at all times. The greatest support is when singing pianissimo at the top of the register. I was taught Bel Canto singing. When I was the bass soloist for my choir in Beethoven's Mass in C, I had to sing a declamatory "Parsus"! at the top of my register. I would have cracked on the note without tremendous support. Coming straight in on the E natural had to be spot on, otherwise it would have been very embarrassing if I cracked on the note. However, the hardest note to sing was the high E flat in the achingly beautiful "Silent Noon" on the word "song". I had to prepare it well beforehand and place my voice across the passagio. Once it was prepared, it was like a mere stepping stone. " when twofold silence", then the passagio "was the song" sung as "sung" which would sound like "song". I could have held that note for as long as my breath lasted. Vowel substitution was used frequently by the Bel Canto singers of the past. "Never sacrifice quality for quantity" was my teachers mantra, who had a voice like Tita Ruffo, but was able to scale down his huge voice to produce a beautiful baritone voice. I miss my lessons with him and that voice that made my ears ring.

Domingo's family had their own Zarzuelo troupe and from childhook he would play piano, sing a part or even conduct to cover for a missing artist. He commenced his degree as a pianist who sometimes sung baritone. With that grounding he is really a complete artist.

Well, put aside that Placido arguably is one of the greatest tenor ever recorded, he is one of very few (if not the only one) who is a conductor who conducts operas and concerts and so, if he says something that others might not be doing, then it's very likely that he's still right and others are wrong.

"sospir" = hope "cielo" = heaven. Sospir is the end of the last sentence, about his hopes, and "Cielo!!" is in the sense of "Wow! result!". eDionysus was talking about the bit at 03:25 to 03:45 where Domingo shows the student how to do that bit. Domingo's so good (from a standing start) that the audience laugh. The pianist and student's reactions are really funny too.

Una Furtiva Lagrima was definitely written for a light, lyric tenor and is usually sung by people like Carreras or Florez rather than the much bigger spinto of Domingo. It should naturally suit the student better than the teacher, but Domingo still shows the audience why he is a great tenor while the student is merely a good one.
