this clip brought back so much joy. my dad used to loop this film via VHS all throughout my childhood. this also explains my melodramatic romantic tendencies as a young adult. i made it to 40 relatively unscathed, though. victoire!

Saw this when I really didn't have an affection for opera. There was quite a bit that I was already familiar with. Very nice and in a theater with a big screen and decent sound system.

One of my favorite films, and I'm not a particularly obsessed fan of opera. It's a visual and auditory delight, beginning to end.

I agree. This is the best rendition of this superb opera. It is the story of poor people, with one chance in life to get it right, and like most of us they get it wrong.

Masterpiece!

Aside from the real bullfight scenes, and, IMHO, the coarse and feral depiction of Carmen, thanks to Rosi, I like this film version. Domingo is sheer perfection and Julia is a wonderful mezzo. Mil gracias por compartir. Paz y salud.

Carmen's not supposed to be ladylike - she's supposed to be a gypsy working in a factory...She is supposed to be fierce, and pehaps even a little coarse. I actually love Migenes' interpretation, and one must not forget Carmen is a part for a mezzosoprano, and Migenes is a soprano

@@christianealshut1123 I'm sorry, but I never got a notification of your reply. She was following Rosi's direction. The whole business of making her super coarse was not necessary. We do have imaginations, after all. Shirley Verrett was also a soprano who portrayed Carmen with Domingo. More proof that if a soprano can go mezzo, then a tenor can go baritone.

Mai vista prima un ' opera " lirica" con il metodo " cinematografico". Mi colpì molto il lavoro fatto da Francesco Rosi. ☝️Ho avuto per anni la cassetta - nastro.😊Dopo averla consumata ,l' ho regalata ad un grande estimatore ,di bel canto,sembrava che avesse solo una comune influenza che però lo doveva tenere per un pò ,assente dai suoi amati vigneti. Era invece l' inizio di qualcos' altro😏. Un fattore ..si era commosso....ed era esaltato come un bambino nonostante l' età.🤭 ( Aveva qualcosa di bello da visionare anche se a riposo forzato.💗Solo chi ama l' opera può capire,soprattutto il lavoro "insolito".( Il nostro F.Rosi.👏👏👏)

Maravillosa encarnación de los personajes. Las actuaciones de Julia Migenes y Plácido Domingo son maravillosas!!! Y no desvirtuemos con ideologías y peroratas la personalidad de la protagonista creada por Merimé, en un contexto y época determinados. Carmen ama la libertad si.... pero, con tal de hacer y conseguir lo que quiere es capaz de destruir a una persona, como lo hace con Don José.

Mai una Carmen più adeguata!

It may not be, but I bought it on Amazon years ago and really enjoyed having it in my opera library, it wasn't as expensive as the met offers are on DVD which can run $55 and up

Carmen was wicked, malicious, fickle, and vindictive by nature. So the fact that she dumped this soldier boy, he could've stepped back and laughed to himself of what a fickle woman she is. Instead, do the insane thing of chasing after her and killing in the end because she rejected you. 🙄
